Reviews for Three Cities Gateway Hotel - Umhlanga

Review 1:Parking always full, breakfast area is always full & always have to ask for eating utensils. Room was situated below the roof top bar, was noisy in da evening

Review 2:Breakfast, n location

Review 3:Aircon blows over the desk area while the sleeping area is cooking! Have to have the key card inserted to power the plug outlets, so your phone cannot charge while you are eating, etc.

Review 4:Location

Review 5:Slow wifi Parking area gets full quickly and one is forced to park in the Gateway mall parking lot. There are no irons in the room, I had to call room service more than once requesting an iron and ironing board.

Review 6:Best customer service experience ever, hotel stuff were a breathe of fresh air. The hotel is in a fm very convinient location, close to the beach and mall. My children really enjoyed the pool deck, received efficient service from the hotel stuff. All in all the attitude and willingness to help of the hotel stuff made up for the little glitches that we encountered.

Review 7:Bath leaked. Restaurant not very appealing, so we didn't eat there, so cannot comment on food standard. Main bar also not very appealing.

Review 8:Very nicely appointed modern clean room. Hotel facilities very good, roof pool/bar excellent. Good location for Gateway mall and also short drive to beach/Umhlanga Rocks

Review 9:The staff were extremly unfriendly and I did not feel welcome. It would have been great if they could a smile on their faces.

Review 10:The comfortable, spacious room.

Review 11:There is no free shuttle service around umhlmaga. The pool was filthy and full of algae... Rooms could be a bit bigger and more cupboard space

Review 12:Rooms are very cosy and comfortable. Staff very friendly and helpful. Great position! Very clean rooms. Great cleaning service

Review 13:This was my 2nd time at gateway hotel, the room was modern and clean, nice size room. The free wifi gives a good connection. The staff is nice and friendly. As a single traveller the bar provided the neccessary entertainment, if that was not enuf the mall is next to the hotel.... The beach is a walk away so location is on point... Lovely stay

Review 14:Party music till late... children could not sleep. Asked if they could warm my child's food.. they rudely refused. The Manager.. Ally.. a very rude and arrogant person. Could not use the pool facility due to private party. Their superior rooms are of a very poor status.

Review 15:Nothing was worth the amount bad place no room service restaurant was closed at 10 would never advice anyone to go there if you look there is better places

Review 16:Difficult to find entrance, everything is dirty, you dont want to touch doors to open! The rooms are not cleaned properly found, previous occupants grape pips by side of bead, crumbs in fridge, surface by washbasin with toothpaste and scum ... only the bed was done. Carpets not vacuumed... staff unfriendly, even when I asked to see the GM, I was first told he was not in. When I said I was going to report to 3-Cities Franchisor all of a sudden he appeared!.. Then says do I want another room, but it will be the same type, no proper apologies and explanation why he is not on top of things, that he cant see that all windows, surfaces are grubby & - I asked for my money back, & went to Protea Hotel Umhlanga Ridge, super superior hotel and I got a room for cheaper - always am a Protea Hotel supporter, and even more so now

Review 17:There is nothing I liked about this place

Review 18:We loved everything about this hotel. Friendly, helpful and accommodating staff. Comfortable, modern and clean rooms. Loved the roof-top pool setting. The location is perfect. We didn't have any meals there - so can't comment on that. As a family we will most definitely go back.

Review 19:Checked in for only an 8 hour stay as arrived in to Durban after flight from Dubai and flying out very early the following morning to Cape Town. Location is excellent having direct access to the Gateway Shopping Centre.

Review 20:Could do with a few more TV channels, no international News channels were available.

Review 21:Great location , walking distance to Gateway Mall, lots of restaurants close by, great pool and sun deck with nice views, very good breakfast, comfortable rooms.

Review 22:Being lied to about the gym as I was told that it is inside the hotel, having to pay extra for breakfast, and being treated like a crook when I said that I am on my way down to swipe my card for breakfast bill.

Review 23:Great location, neat rooms.

Review 24:Water leaked out the shower door in room 308 All good in 307 and 309

Review 25:conveniently next to Gateway Mall, so able to safely walk there to shop and eat at the many restuarants

Review 26:Asked kitchen staff to put ice packs in the freezer for my next day's travel. Next morning I collect them and they had put it in the fridge

Review 27:The hotel is just fantastic

Review 28:I had to call reception 4 times for an iron and ironing board. I waited quite a while before I got it.

Review 29:Proximity to the mall, cleanliness and the design of the room.

Review 30:Location is excellent as it is attached to the Gateway Mall. Safe undercover parking was provided at no additional expense. Staff members are very helpful and friendly. We have stayed their on numerous occasions and can recommend it.

Review 31:Nothing....

Review 32:Everything, it actually felt like we were in paradise hence it was so sad to have to leave. Whenever we visit Durban, whether for a holiday or on business, we definitely gonna stay there. Lovely and comfortable hotel indeed. Thank you for the perfect hospitality, don't change anything, just keep up the good work.

Review 33:1. Breakfast if not included in the room fees is VERY EXPENSIVE. Ended up paying R330 for basic bacon and eggs for two people. CRAZY!!! 2. We were only provided with 1 bottle of water. The booking clearly stated that 2 people were in the room. 3. Cleaning lady started knocking WAY to early.

Review 34:The location was a plus. Loved that I could walk to and from the mall with such ease. The rooms are nice, just wished that an extra blanket could be provided in the room.

Review 35:None.

Review 36:The room was very comfortable and the facilities and amenities well maintained. The close proximity to a shopping mall was an added bonus. Will definitely return if I visit KZN again.

Review 37:lousy coffee, not enough milk noisy from renovation, kids side is not ideal for a grumpy old fart like me, but I will keep coming back, all in all, love the place, coffee downstairs is good! staff are lovely!!

Review 38:easy access, friendly think this was my 7th or 8th return!

Review 39:Every single glass I wanted to use at breakfast was dirty, every morning! I looked through the whole lot by the juice table and not one of them were thoroughly cleaned. looked like they were just lightly rinsed. All the residue from previous uses was still there, including lip marks on some. Turned me off completely. Also not quite enough parking, we had to park at gateway mall.

Review 40:The environment is lovely, rooms are pretty and breakfast is tops. Balconies are nice and private.

Review 41:Suggestion only: chairs on patio outside room. Perhaps a little maintenance on pool deck area.

Review 42:Beautiful big room, lovely bath, cleaned perfectly daily. Clean linen and towels daily. Reception, Fig tree restaurant and bar area classic, classy, calm.

Review 43:On Friday night the hot water was barely warm and the headboard was dusty. The noise from the bar area was disturbing, a redesign to block the noise is necessary. Based on other reviews of this property and our own experience, noise is an issue.

Review 44:The room is elegant, modern and comfortable. We loved the block-out curtains. We liked being close to Gateway shopping and this was the reason for choosing this property.

Review 45:I was disturbed through the night by knocks on my door and calls to my room. I unplugged the telephone but had no way of stopping people knocking on my door. It was quite frustrating as it went on into the early hours of the morning.

Review 46:This place is terrible!!! It is disgusting. They do not clean properly. There was hair in the shower and the room was dusty as if it was never even swept. They then upgraded us to another suite and there, there was ketchup in the fridge. and the bath tub was dirty. I WILL NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN and all that was said was sorry. When I cheked out I complained again and the guy said OK??? This is disgraceful.

Review 47:The only thing good thing about this place is the location.

Review 48:Cleanness of the rooms can be improved; ladies at the breakfast are not that friendly and helpful as their colleagues at the reception desk..

Review 49:Very friendly and helpful staff at the reception desk. Perfect location close to the airport, shopping, lots of restaurants ...

Review 50:Why have a TV blaring our mindless sport in the bar at 10 o'clock at night? Too noisy, too impersonal - very unwelcoming and ordinary atmosphere.

Review 51:Its proximity to Chris Saunders Park - our evening venue

Review 52:The room wasn't up to standard...was moved to another room with no view and did ask for a higher level room but request was not fulfilled

Review 53:Location of the hotel was excellent

Review 54:Kindly just put extra warm blankets in the closet..

Review 55:The staff was excellent. Made me feel like I was home and special. I have always had positive experiences - Thank you for that. Kindly keep it up!

Review 56:The only problems we encountered involved parking. At any given time we could not find parking within the designated area and found it unpleasant to have to walk from the mall parking lot with our bags. Halaal breakfast not catered for.

Review 57:Access to the mall was perfect. Size of the room was good, i wonder if there is an option without the bath for couples who don't need it. Overall excellent stay

Review 58:Being hounded to pay for breakfast when it could have been charged to room which I would have settled on my departure with the other restaurant bills.

Review 59:The friendly staff and cleanliness of the rooms.

Review 60:Carpets on the corridors had unpleasant smell. Parking was not enough for guests. On this one particular day the lift was dirty on the floor .

Review 61:The idea of the bath next to the bed. Best location.I was happy about the cleaninness of the room and the comfort of the bed. The establishment is value for money.

Review 62:I like the attentiveness of the staff they enquire about your needs and go out the way to meet them. The environment is modern bit still family friendly

Review 63:When we arrived, and we were checking in even though we handed our receipt of booking and payment, receptionist asked for 1 night payment because she said "it did not reflect on her system"!!! We felt she was trying to extort extra money from us. !!!

Review 64:Location, clean, good service.

Review 65:This was our second stay during the tourism indaba at this hotel and we loved it as its perfect place to stay and has a gr8 selection for breakfast and the location is ideal -

Review 66:Limitation of Parking was an inconvenience. Having to park at the Gateway mall is unsafe.

Review 67:The staff working at the restaurant and also at the Reception desk on the evening of the 30th May - were absolutely exceptional. All very helpful!

Review 68:Wifi was a bit slow, but nothing really bad

Review 69:What was great was Kim and Margaret, the breakfast was very nice, the place was spacious, personal attention that we got from Kim and Margaret

Review 70:Noise on Friday; Shortage of parking, had to park at Gateway Mall;

Review 71:The facilities are great and free wifi tops it up; the rooms deco exceptional; some staff members try hard to make our stay comfortable.

Review 72:The guest parking is quite confusing at first. An additional access card would be very helpful. We had to phone more than once for reception to act on our requests. The two bath towels provided in the room is not sufficient if you are accompanied by a lady. We did request additional towels which they provide after adding adding it to our account, which was to be reversed once returned, however, that was not the case and we had some difficulty in sorting it out upon checkout.

Review 73:The hotel offers great value for money and is quite conveniently situated. The facilities are very modern and clean and the rooms are very spacious. Staff, including cleaners, are very friendly and helpful.

Review 74:I found bugs that actually bite me in my bed. The catering staff in the dinning area are totally unfriendly and rude....There was a total of 6 people in at breakfast but staff and 5 staff on duty. Only a very elderly Indian gentleman was seen helping guest while the other 3 had their own meeting for the duration of my entire breakfast. I was ruddily stopped and asked to pay for my breakfast which I knew full well I had too on my departure. Also R155 for 2 slides of toast is madness but it's not about the price I paid for toast but for the service I received together with my bed bugs that was the most shocking thing to date I've had to deal with in my 23 years of traveling globally.

Review 75:The staff at the reception desk was great.

Review 76:I checked in with my daughter who is 9 years of age and it was really difficult to come out of the shower to change , no privacy due to open plan .

Review 77:The location was excellent , clean with really nice interior colour selection.

Review 78:There is nothing we did not like.

Review 79:The hotel was walking distance from the Hospital I needed to visit and it's linked to a large Shopping centre with quality restaurants and shops. The room was very comfortable and fully equiped with all needed facilities. The staffs service, from reception to in the bar was excellent. Can't wait to stay there again.

Review 80:the bed was sagging in the middle.. woke up with a sore back.

Review 81:super friendly service throughout the hotel, pool bar and open plan bath tub was my favourite

Review 82:Our toilet smelled like urine after the cleaning lady was there. I ask the lady on the first day to please clean the toilet and when I got back from the mall it still smelled like urine.

Review 83:To order food to the room

Review 84:The position is great, convenient to the airport and all the northern parts of Durban. Friendly, efficient staff and the lifts are zoned that you can only go up to the level you are booked on.

Review 85:A pleasant beautifully presented Hotel with spacious, modern rooms - everything is in top condition and clean. Location is great with direct access to the Gateway shopping Centre. The breakfast spread is not huge but adequite. Enjoyable and real value for money certainly on a par with the other 4 star Hotels at Gateway.

Review 86:The room was not always 100% clean. some of the towels are "old" looking.

Review 87:The location was great, the breakfast and the food overall was good, the staff were very friendly and helpful

Review 88:The wifi wasn't working properly.

Review 89:We like the fact that it was convenient located at the shopping mall. We felt safe after walking back to our hotel at 22h00 night time.

Review 90:the cleanliness was average. the floors downsatirs were dirty for the time we were there our taxi driver had to unpack our bags and get a perter staff not over friendly and helpful paying R155 if you wanted breakfast pool area needs to be cleaned

Review 91:excellent location, comfortable rooms,

Review 92:I had to repeatedly ask for a cot for my child even though i asked in writing prior to my stay.Cot was finally given in the evening. Had to wait about 40 min for a shuttle for our luggage.

Review 93:Excellent room.Great breakfast.

Review 94:Being a diabetic that inject myself daily II was expecting a bar fridge in the room . We stayed there before and had a fridge in the room. Must you ask for a room with a fridge when you do the booking.?

Review 95:Distance of parking at gateway all the time. When extending my stay it was a very painful process and front office had messed up on the next room which i had escalated to management.

Review 96:Convenience of location.

Review 97:no balcony, window cannot be open much, green metal in front, no view. Claustrophobic with green metal in front of the window.

Review 98:size of the room position

Review 99:Its a bit noisy because of its location. Birds knock into the windows when it catches the light. So sleep is disturbed.

Review 100:The helpful staff and the hotel decor.

Review 101:Took me a while to check in although I had issues with the reservation(size of room. to be specific) but was sorted out eventually

Review 102:Proximity to the mall and breakfast arrangements

Review 103:Attention to detail at the pool lacking a little bit. No price concessions for seniors

Review 104:Large modern room, good location. Would stay again and this s our second Christmas at this hotel.

Review 105:Wi-fi connection is slow.

Review 106:The bed is so comfortable and after a hectic night of partying, that's what you need to be ready for the next day's adventure.

Review 107:I did NOT like being charged R155 per person for breakfast. The room rate should have included the breakfast but, be that as it may, I could have paid for a decent evening meal with my wife for the price I paid for an average breakfast

Review 108:we were on second floor we could hear the music from the event on the ground floor, and also from the RAGE party across the park.If i was at the hotel on friday night with the rage party at the wave pool I would have checked out.

Review 109:convienience to gateway shopping. The fact that when the center had no power the Hotel still had power - well done!

Review 110:Nothing.

Review 111:Reception, concierge, food and oh my goodness the room (211). The treatment by all staff but especially Mr Ally Cassim the manager on duty was like a 7-star butler yet he was driving delivery through his people. Only he leads by example.

Review 112:Thanks very much for the hotel team to keep your hotel up to standard and being kind to us..I will be glad if you guys can put more fridges, and add more parking...

Review 113:The room overlooked the street which was very noisy so sleep quality was compromised. The tea/coffee amenities were a bit thin and lacked quality.

Review 114:I loved the size of the room which was massive. Everything was very modern and clean. The position to the shopping centre and its central location to the beaches and the airport was good.

Review 115:We loved every minuite of our stay....your stall were most helpfull and went out of their way to make us feel confortable.........We will definatly use your facility again.

Review 116:The parking was a bit hard to find as hotel parking was full

Review 117:The pool on top and the view was amazing The bar on Saturday night was chilled and the barman's service was amazing.

Review 118:This hotel is getting older, in the past even the smallest details were perfect while now you see some make-up is required

Review 119:Perfect location, good staff

Review 120:The lack of a full length mirror in the superior room.

Review 121:The vicinity and access to the mall, amazing breakfast and extreemly friendly staff. The size of the room is wow, incredible. Spacious!

Review 122:The treatment I recieved. Given a room with sleeping guests and being billed twice for 1 person having breakfast.

Review 123:The suite I was upgraded to and the bar and the staff bar

Review 124:The pool was great with very comfortable sunbeds. The room is very big and the bed sleeps amazing. The breakfast was good but a bit expensive. It was 155 rand p.p.

Review 125:The bathroom in the first room that my parents were booked into flooded and they had to be moved to another room, which had a problem with the drainage in the bath-tub. They were offered the left-overs from the Saturday breakfast on Sunday, which was served cold. They requested an additional bath-towel on Saturday which never arrived.

Review 126:The quality of the beddings; room itself. The cleanliness of the linen. The location.

Review 127:Booking was done three weeks prior to stay yet there was no record of it at reception. Total confusion. Instructions on how to use the key in the lift was vague leaving us frustrated. The coffee station was poorly stocked, sugar for one cup only and coffee for two. Was disturbed by cleaning staff more than an hour before vacating time. I feel the reception should ask customer on departure if they enjoyed their stay/ or had complaints and immediately take corrective action if there was a complaint.

Review 128:Close to mall. Good choice of restaurants close at hand.

Review 129:did not have shower on Monday morning cos hotel did not have water.thought you would have had emergency storage tanks.had to cancel all Durban business and drive home to shower.what a waste of a day.

Review 130:nicely designed.good finishes.plenty chrome,glass and wood.

Review 131:The hotel shuttle services is very expensive and for people coming to have fun it's nit very much on normal price level . As other hotels I have been to in Durban that offer free services to other tourist place's. And that the rooms don't have fridges.

Review 132:I liked the extra services and I was happy with the excellent service and level of maturity and respect I got from the staff

Review 133:-Not enough parking for the patrons

Review 134:-Very friendly and helpful staff - Very clean and well furnished rooms - Close proximity to ALL amenities (shopertainment, Golf, Stadia and airport)
