Reviews for Parador de La Palma

Review 1:As much as we liked the hotel, the restaurant could be improved, a lot. First of all the restaurant staffs appeared stressed and overwhelmed all the time (and we were there for a week). I spoke to one of them and was told that at night there were usually only 3 staffs manning the restaurants with at least 40-50 tables. So the service was chaotic and forgetful at best and sometimes the receptionist needed to come and help. It is sad that when we are paying almost 1.000€ for a week stay, the hotel management couldn't be bothered to hire more staffs to improve the dining service. Therefore, my advise to management is to hire more waiting staffs and do not overwork your people! Also, the water in the pool was ice-cold. I tried to go into the pool a few times, but had to get out as soon as I got in because it was freezing!

Review 2:The hotel is situated in a beautiful garden landscape up a hill in Brena Baja. It is walking distance to Los Cancajos (~ 2km) and there is a bus connection to St. Cruz as well as to Los Llanos, so even without a car the it is quite accessible. The whole complex is well done, the decoration traditional and tasteful, and the breakfast variety was very good. Room was clean, though not spotless but we didn't mind it that much. Food was good, but service is chaotic at best (see improvement suggestions). From the hotel one can see the beautiful stars at night from the garden, which was definitely very romantic. Restaurant food is rather pricey. I would stay there again, but would not frequent the restaurant unless I have to.

Review 3:Inability to book a table in the restaurant, which appeared under-staffed. Obliged to hover by the entrance for over an hour on our first evening, with difficulty attracting any attention from harassed staff. While these were sometimes friendly, service was always brisk - but not necessarily efficient?

Review 4:Excellent base for exploring the island and its hiking trails. Delightful grounds and view. Restaurant served good food - albeit from a relatively limited menu.

Review 5:We loved the quiet location and the fact that the parador sits in its own very large garden. Although out of town there is a good bus service into Santa Cruz. We loved the island of La Palma and would go back to both the island and the parador.

Review 6:The wifi did not work in the rooms. Being English we would have liked a tea tray in our room.

Review 7:The room was clean and comfortable and a good size with a balcony. The breakfast offered a varied selection with plenty of fresh fruit. The public areas are attractively furnished.

Review 8:Why do they serve excellent HOT food on COLD plates? - this applies to breakfast and evening meals. There is no excuse for this. Our safe did not work, was reported on day 1 but was never repaired - not good enough.

Review 9:It is a very comfortable hotel with friendly staff and the quality of the meals is very high and the menu includes a nice selection of local specialities including wines. The gardens are ENORMOUS and provide a very pleasant strolling environment.

Review 10:Delightful relaxing quiet hotel. Our room had wonderful sea views. The location was good for access to the road leading to mountain walks and beaches. We would definately stay again when we return to La Palma.

Review 11:Peace and quiet

Review 12:the price of breakfest

Review 13:location

Review 14:The door of the room closed vert difficult.

Review 15:Good restaurant.

Review 16:The hotel has an colonial charm about it. facilities very good.

Review 17:no english language entertainment channel on tv got sick to death of looking at BBC world News and Bloomberg stock and shares (yawn, yawn).

Review 18:very comfortable, nice staff, beautiful gardens.

Review 19:While break fast was good trough our stay . meals were not. i found the kitchen poor in the choice of vegetables and fruits and often meals were prepared in a very old fashioned way. dishes resulted heavy and not well prepared if you consider that fish was often overcooked and the choice of vegetables were limited to only onions , zucchini and bel peppers . upon asking to set up and avocado and tomato dish i was answered that avocado were not in season while i could buy myself fresh avocados , mango and papaya everywhere in the supermarkets the Isla Bonita . The Tomatoes were imported from Holland ... Kitchen should make an effort to offer more local produces and reach out island farmers and more quality suppliers to ensure that meals taste as should in these latitudes .

Review 20:The lady at the reception was very kind and managed our requests in a friendly way

Review 21:It is cooler and cloudier in this (east) side of the island. Generally warmer and sunnier on the west. This wasn't a problem for us as we were hiking, and on the high cumbre the sun still shines as you are above the clouds.

Review 22:The room was very attractive - stylishly furnished and with a large balcony facing the sea. The food was consistently excellent. The location was great for hiking - well positioned for covering all of the island. The gardens were very attractive. New years eve gala dinner was nicely low key.

Review 23:pity that parador is not located on the sunny much warmer side of La Palma. Food is prepared in an old fashioned way , lacks of variety of fresh vegetables herbs and is rather bland in taste. Dishes remind of simple 70's style dishes and need an update while remaining traditional .

Review 24:warm welcome and very kind staff both at reception and other areas. Breakfast buffet is well stock with enough to chose from. rooms are very comfortable , quietness reigns over all areas and it makes great hotel to relax and spend few days to visit this cooler part of the island. it great to make use of the sauna after long day out.

Review 25:It is cooler and cloudier on this side of the island. We were in La Palma over Christmas and it was 18C on this side with lots of cloud around but 23C and full sunshine in Tazacorte. The stats from the met office suggest that this is not unusual. So if you are looking for sunshine you will need to drive over to the other side.

Review 26:This is a good option on La Palma. The hotel is a comfortable place to stay while exploring the area but you must have a car. Santa Cruz de la Palma is a few kilometres away and is well worth a visit. You can also drive up to the observatories for stunning views. You will invariably see the sunshine up there and on the other side of the island (it is often cloudy and cooler on this side). Another good drive is up to the route of the volcanoes. Try restaurant La Lonja in Santa Cruz for lunch or dinner. Also worth a night or two at the hotel hacienda de abajo in Tazacorte (take the LP3)

Review 27:Non sound-proof walls between rooms. Too expensive buffet- breakfast. Need of a refurbishment

Review 28:Good location close to Sta Cruz de la Palma. Great views and swimming pool

Review 29:staff could have been friendlier but this may have been a language issue.

Review 30:clean and comfortable, good restaurant, lovely views across the sea - was only there one night en route to somewhere else and was a lovely stop over.

Review 31:Although the stafff were always very friendly and most courteous, the service was a bit slow - but perhaps that's the more laid back attitude we should aim for? That is the only - very slightly - negative thing I can think of.

Review 32:The hotel was very pretty, the rooms spacious, comfy and with lovely views. The hotel gardens are spectacular. The food was delicious, if a bit pricey.

Review 33:A bit isolated and difficult to find(in the dark without satnav!).

Review 34:Very comfortable hotel with all modern conveniences but with a definitecanarian ambience well up to usual high Parador standards.Excellentseaview room and splendid buffet breakfast.

Review 35:Mainly staff in reception were not friendly Food in restaurant was presented well or badly, the same dish on different nights. Badly trained staff.

Review 36:Staff in Restaurant were helpful and friendly

Review 37:Painfully slow service in restaurant. Generally old-fashioned (I.E.1970s) feel to the place. No soundproofing between rooms. No kettle etc.in rooms, yet a fridge full of alcohol. Not up to the standard of mostParadors in mainland Spain.

Review 38:Good location, gardens.

Review 39:The location is very attractive, but awkward unless you have your own transportation. For longer stays is is advisable to rent a car.

Review 40:Rooms are spacious and very comfortable. Wifi is free and works well. The hotel has an excellent restaurant, which is open for lunch as well as diner. Staff is helpful and polite.

Review 41:Everything. Superb hotel, friendly staff, wonderful room with balcony overlooking the sea. We hadn't booked this room but were offered it anyway. Great breakfast, good dinner. Excellent staff. Really a perfect stay.

Review 42:A very nice hotel. We had a comfortable, large room. The room had a balcony overlooking a lovely view of the garden with the sea in the background. Great breakfast and good evening meal.

Review 43:One or two reception staff a bit distant and not very friendly. Broken hair drier, damaged rod on stair carpet could be dangerous.

Review 44:The courtyard garden and the main garden. The attentive friendly staff. Good food. Peace and quiet.

Review 45:The swimming pool did not appear to be heated. The small gym could bemuch improved for very little expense ( E.G. there were only two verysmall ( 500 g ) dumb bells )

Review 46:It has an old world character, even though it is relatively modern andis purpose built ( unlike the majority of Paradores )

Review 47:A bit isolated, but cabs are easy if you don't have a car. The restaurant was fairly good - definitely more expensive than elsewhere, but that's expected for a place like this.

Review 48:Nice, comfortable rooms; quiet gardens and pool; nice view from the bar and restaurant.

Review 49:Old hotel which actually smell like an old castle with many signs showing and proving serious re-development and management improvement necessity, like: no elevator, crack on the wall, non-working bath equipment (sink), lack of soundproofing etc Wi-Fi is not stable, worked at evening and stopped in the morning.

Review 50:Hotel looking like castle Location with great views to the capital St. Cruze de la Palma and gardens. Wooden floors and old style fashioned furniture (someone like it). Clean, good quality linens. Wi-Fi and flatscreen TV. Decent breakfast with wide choice of meals and fresh (pressed) juices. Good covering and serving. Even ghosts were not found here, good experience of living in castle style hotel though :)

Review 51:Such a wonderful location with views over the sea and mountainous landscape. The huge garden is sensational with fabulous Canarian vegetation. Lovely big rooms, great public areas to lounge around in and excellent service.

Review 52:The rooms need to be refurbished, it looks a bit off time

Review 53:One evening we had an excellent meal. The garden, more a park, isabsolutely beautiful. The view of the ocean is marvellous

Review 54:Swimming pool was not heated ;-)

Review 55:Excellent location, quite and peacefull, you do need a car though to move around. Very friendly service and excellent food, beautiful rooms, all with balcony. We shall certainly return to this hotel !!

Review 56:The hotel restaurant was not what we would have expected from a four star hotel. The prices were a bit higher than average, which is acceptable for a good hotel, but the food quality was actually worse than most of the tourist restaurant found along the coast. Apart from that, however, a great hotel! Go there for the comfort - but avoid the cooking if you can!

Review 57:Weather!!

Review 58:Restaurant

Review 59:We enjoyed the position of our room 131. The food was excellent but very rich. We had a wonderful view..

Review 60:Good quality hotel, and well signed from the airport

Review 61:no real negatives

Review 62:just about everything

Review 63:Not enough time to enjoy everything at the facilities

Review 64:Silence, absolute peace of mind

Review 65:Beautiful room, the surrounding grounds and location are very charming and pretty. Outstanding value.
