Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo descritpion

This 14th-century castle overlooks the valley of the River Águeda and the amazing countryside of Old Castile. It is ideal for a relaxing break in an atmospheric, historic setting.
Set on a hilltop with a steep drop to the valley floor, the Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo boasts a dramatic location in this ancient city. It is surrounded by historic monuments such as the city’s cathedral and Plaza Mayor, beyond which you can enjoy the peaceful countryside – known as the Campo Charro.
The ancient stone buildings of the carefully restored castle come with their own attractive grounds. The delightful interior is full of traditional, Castillian furnishings, charming original details, sunny courtyards and comfortable lounges.
Admire the huge dining hall, with its stone arches and historic tapestries – a great place to enjoy typical local dishes, a succulent roast and Iberian hams.

Reviews for Parador de Ciudad Rodrigo

Review 1:Bar closed at 8.00pm for pre dinner drinks and restaurant didn't open till 8.30pm therefore no drink!!

Review 2:Fabulous location. Great overnight stop when travelling from Bilbao.

Review 3:Breakfast was a shambles. There was only one member of staff on duty (felt quite sorry for her), so we had to wait ages for a table to be cleared, wait again for coffee to be brought, then wait again after we asked for a glass of cold water (all the bottles they'd put out earlier were empty). And the food was disappointing for the price!

Review 4:Water was rusty and brown. Very off putting. Breakfast needs improving. Dinner could benefit from more choice.

Review 5:Amazing historic location. Nice town. Hotel was warm. Food was OK. Hotel was interesting.

Review 6:Very pleasant dinner, but dining room a little austere and lacking in atmosphere.....no table cloths, a bit stark. Doesn't make for a memorable evening. Not enough staff. It would have been nice to have a drink before dinner.

Review 7:Imposing castle/fortress, great hotel and location...steeped in history. Take a walk along the ancient town walls, splendid views....you can see the breach in the wall where Wellington broke through with his forces in 1812 and threw out the French during the Peninsular War.

Review 8:Poor service. Insufficient number of staff to care for guests. Waited 2 hours in bar for drinks and dinner and gave up. Dirty floor in room and restaurant. Room 101 very noisy till 2.00am from function next door. No wifi in room

Review 9:Great castle decorated authentically. Friendly staff.

Review 10:No comfortable seating in room, and understandable lack of noise reduction between adjacent rooms were the only minor irritations.

Review 11:The location is ideal. The access to both town and castle was easy and every part so close. Even got excellent assistance from local police when lost in one-way system. Paradox staff had sufficient English and we're very helpful.

Review 12:No complaints at all.

Review 13:Great location in a historic castle incorporated into the city walls. All the comfort and traditional decor you expect in a Parador. Free parking and a special deal which made the Parador (usually expensive for our budget)quite affordable.

Review 14:One of the best parts were the storks just outside the hotel and the swifts (?) evening ariel display was fantastic. The gardens were a pleasant surprise and the staff fantastic.

Review 15:Air conditioning did not work in our bedroom and we spent a very warm uncomfortable night. Restaurant menu was a little unusual and no clear separate list of starters and main courses Wine list only had one white wine listed all others were reds

Review 16:Interesting and convenient location to explore the old city

Review 17:Our room was very hot and the air conditioning didn't seem to make a difference. The wifi was very weak in the room so we had to do emails by the reception area.

Review 18:Good parking, restaurant fine. Good wine list. Good location.

Review 19:The Parador hotels do not open their kitchens until 20hr30, too late for the more elderly guests. 24hr choice of snacks too limited

Review 20:Spectacular views, good quality bedrooms, tasteful conversion to a hotel of an historic castle. Excellent Reception staff.

Review 21:Very little to complain about. Getting there is a bit tricky. Room-to-room sound insulation could be better. We would stay there again.

Review 22:A lovely old parador in the centre of historic Cuidad Rodrigo. Nice room, comfy beds, cheerful staff. We didn't eart in the restaurant, but breakfast was excellent.

Review 23:no tea making facilities in the bedroom.

Review 24:view & balcony in the bedroom, amazing building in lovely surroundings, thoughtfully converted comfortable & quiet, car park available, very good food, polite staff,

Review 25:The Spanish habit of eating late but that's the way it is

Review 26:The historical location but the history didn't get in the way of modern comforts. Good food. Good value for money.

Review 27:There was only staff member on duty at breakfast, and though working as hard as she could, she was completely overwhelmed by the number of guests. The result was that it was not possible to get tea or coffee, the buffet was not restocked, no cooked food was on offer. Maybe somebody was off sick or some other temporary problem, but it was very unimpressive.

Review 28:Great location in the castle, part of the walls of this very attractive and historic small town. Large comfortable bedroom, fine lounge and dining room. Gardens.

Review 29:The bar was closed and staffing levels at a minimum. We arrived in heavy rain and I suspect that increased the number of diners that evening. In fine weather we would have walked around the citadel for a drink and dinner and I expect the majority of our fellow guests were in the same situation

Review 30:Staying in a beautifully restored castle in stunning surroundings The decor was all tapestry and armoury. With comfortable furnishings. Excellent dinner and good value in low season.

Review 31:As with all paradores breakfast is a little expensive however 5mins walk to plaza mayor for spanish breakfast and good coffeeeasily available

Review 32:Position of hotel and free parking(secure) great views from top ofcastle which we were allowed to visit town centre very close withseveral good cafes lots to see

Review 33:I became ill on the trip and we felt that we needed to return home. The young lady at the reception helped us cancel our original plane reservation and made us a new reservation for the next day. She was very kind.

Review 34:Nothing

Review 35:I have wanted to come here for some time and see for myself the Parador. My parents had visited the Parador in 1955 having driven through France and Spain. Franco was in power and Spain would have been quite different for the traveller. My mother wrote about her visit and her descriptions and story made me want to visit. Obviously much of the area had changed but the Parador was essentially very similar. We had a delightful stay, the food was lovely, the staff very helpful, especially when we decided to book further stays in Paradors for the remainder of our trip. The old town was enchanting. Thank you

Review 36:The setting of this parador is second to none. The atmosphere of this hotel fits right into the sleepy nature of Ciudad Rodrigo where time stood still. If you want to relax this it the spot!

Review 37:it did not have a pool and it gets pretty hot in the summer.

Review 38:The Hotel was a beautiful castle. Rooms were spacious and very clean. Shame the walls did not allow the wifi to work properly in our room. Dinner at the hotel was very good as was the breakfast. The Parador was in the old city which is surrounded by high walls, something out of a Medievil times. You could walk along these walls which took you along the whole perimeter of the town offering spectacular views of the surrounding areas. I would Not go for a long stay.

Review 39:Restaurant staff not as good as other Paradors nothing offered so had to as for most things

Review 40:Location

Review 41:Room was too warm and the food could have been better

Review 42:Location and the ambience

Review 43:Location, comfort

Review 44:A wonderful walk back in time, with lovely historic architecture! Certainly looking to go back again.

Review 45:Parking not brilliant for motorbikes

Review 46:Very beautiful location and hotel an experience to stay in.

Review 47:Directions to parador are inadequate

Review 48:Atmosphere

Review 49:La location suggestiva

Review 50:Welcome too much administrative ! Diner very expensive for a modest meal.

Review 51:Excellent Parador in a nice city.

Review 52:Pillows were too hard

Review 53:The decor and staff, very helpfull.

Review 54:We have been before and will go again

Review 57:Staff excellent, Evening meals very good. lovely gardens. Quiet

Review 58:A few things, such as WiFi, were not operating. Meal costs excessive for what you received

Review 59:The building. The location.

Review 60:Watching bull fighting at a bar All the storks The beautiful church

Review 61:Our bedroom was rather small but had everything we needed and a beautiful view.

Review 62:very comfortable. Dinner was excellent also breakfast.

Review 63:Dinner was disappointing

Review 64:Clean, comfortable, pleasant in great location

Review 65:Great reception and service, good meal, beautiful historic property, walking the town

Review 66:The Staff for the breakfast was not very responsive or welcoming.

Review 67:Great location. Very nice entrance and outstanding staff in the reception.

Review 68:No real bar facilities. Had to wait call a waitress from the restaurant. No hot food at breakfast readily available.

Review 69:Loved the old castle feel.

Review 70:breakfast price

Review 71:experience with Parador

Review 72:The castle and the views from the tower, they were superb

Review 73:Price for restaurant. Excesive

Review 74:Slow restaurant service

Review 75:The air conditioning was ineffective. No tea making in room

Review 76:Location and the historic building free parking on site

Review 77:Everything about the hotel was excellent. They are very pet friendly and the welcome pack for the Dog was a very nice touch.

Review 78:Breakfast was expensive for what it was!

Review 79:Loved staying in a real castle Everything about the place was great!

Review 80:Location, staff and room. Did I mention location?

Review 81:The location and the city ... The heritage of the Parador

Review 82:Superb location and great atmosphere

Review 83:I stay here whenever I pass through the area. The staff are lovely and always remember me.

Review 84:Everything, location, place, the grounds, the room, and the foodl.

Review 85:Nothing!

Review 86:Everything!!

Review 87:Fabulous location and having a room with a balcony gave us a great view

Review 88:nothing to dislike about this hotel.

Review 89:The hotel is first class both for both the accommodation and its excellent food. The interior decoration and features are exceptional. We would certainly stay there again if in the area, but it is not a hotel for those who are looking for a cheap overnight stay. But it is a wonderful place for a special treat. The hotel is a castle which forms part of a walled city with exceptional views of the surrounding countryside.

Review 90:Man at check-in very aloof, not especially helpful or friendly.

Review 91:Location inside old city walls was great. Hotel was well appointed, quiet, convenient, clean, and comfortable.

Review 92:A really stunning Parador in an old castle set within a beautifully well preserved walled hilltop town not far from the Portuguese border. Friendly staff, fairly easy to locate and good on-site parking. 200 meters or so to the main plaza.

Review 93:This place is about as authentic as the Disney castle. There is little to recommend it. Small, poorly-furnished rooms with no aircon are like a regional 2* hotel. Refuse room 205! It is directly above the kitchen - hot and noisy! If you want to see the building, sleep somewhere else and go there for a drink. You may get served- if you are lucky.

Review 94:Very helpful reception staff.

Review 95:The restaurant staff, the fact that the hotel does not accept pets, even small, the mixture of ancient walls with tacky modern metal glas enclosures.

Review 96:The building dtyle, the location, the view

Review 97:One male member of staff at reception was unwelcoming, disinterested and almost obstructive in telling us there was no 'amigos de parador es' scene. When we persisted he produced the necessary paperwork.

Review 98:Beautiful room, very comfortable beds, lovely views. We particularly chose this Parador because it was close to the town centre (so you could have dinner at a different restaurant if you wished. There was private parking, the hotel was easy to find, and the breakfast was brilliant plentiful and delicious.

Review 99:We thoroughly enjoyed our stay once we found it. It would be extremelyhelpful if directions/map were provided once the accomodationswere booked. We had a very stressful beginning once we entered thecity in a car.

Review 100:Exiting the town after our stay was an adventure for the SatNav!

Review 101:Had we known how beautiful the town was we would have allowed ourselves more time. Everything about the Parador itself was fantastic including the food.

Review 102:A terrible experience in the dining room. As there was only one man working, everything was rushed and the food quality was poor. We have stayed here before and each time the dining room cuisine and service was excellent. What on earth has happened? Far too high a price to pay for such poor standards. Come on Spanish Paradors - get your act together or you will lose your customers altogether!

Review 103:The historic building and furniture

Review 104:Ask for a room at the end of a main / side corridor. It is not the fault of the management but noise carries a lot from guests talking outside their rooms as it is an old stone building. This was the only tiny fault we could find.

Review 105:If you are traveling from Madrid to Porto or Coimbra then it is worthwhile spending a night here. It is not the most special Parador but they seem to get everything right. Nice views. Food in the restaurant was excellent. Town is small but worth exploring with some nice bars and cafes.

Review 106:Trying to drive a van into Ciudad Rodrigo and finding a route to the hotel was tricky enough - the signage helped but leaving was even harder due to the one way system and tight streets - but this is hardly the fault of the hotel!

Review 107:We loved the feel of the building; the views, the room (traditional but well equipped), the artifacts on display, the decor, really is a stunning building and we found the dinner & breakfast both to be excellent - even if we had to do a little guesswork with the Spanish only menu! Good parking and reliable wifi was also available and the staff were lovely.

Review 108:The dining room is void of atmosphere I expect Basil Fawltey to stride in any minute.

Review 109:We stay regularly. It is dog friendly and we take little dogs. The food is good and has improved on this last visit.

Review 110:The comfort and the room was great. The village is beautiful and with did a guided tour. Very interesting. We had a very good and special dinner at Conde Rodrigo 1.

Review 111:breakfast a little spartan compared to other Paradors; wifi could be improved

Review 112:location is outstanding both historically and for beautiful country side/scenery

Review 113:Only one member of staff serving in the restaurant. Food not as good as at other paradors.

Review 114:Location. A lovely building with comfortable rooms. Parking on site.

Review 115:1. The hotel is difficult to find through a maze of narrow streets. 2. The hotel was empty in January and being run by a skeleton staff. we wondered why it had remained open 3. The food in the restaurant was poorly cooked expensive and served by inexperienced staff who spoke little or no english. We had the Dinner and Breakfast. 4. We would not stay there again

Review 116:Situated in a lovely location

Review 117:We felt very comfortable, the location and views are superb, and the combination of the tower with the surrounding building by a glass roof is ingenious.

Review 118:Even though we had directions and a GPS was not that easy to find. We had read that the restaurant was the best in Ciudad Rodrigo but we were a little disappointed in the food at dinner. Perhaps we just chose the wrong main courses.

Review 119:The Parador was an old castle and was wonderful to wander around inside and outside in the gardens and on the castle walls. Reception was very friendly and professional, the service was excellent, and car parking was on the premises. The rooms were decorated in keeping with the surroundings and were very large. The buffet breakfast was excellent with a large variety of options available,

Review 120:very unique setting in a centuries old castle, beautiful library, dining room, entryway, great hall, and tower, in a well preserved centuries old walled town of Ciudaf Rodrigo. Incredible breakfasts served with an abundance of choices.

Review 121:Me and my husband just loved the Parador in Cuidad Rodrigo. We had a wonderful time in the old city. Everyone in the hotel and the locals we met were so very friendly. We have been to many Paradores in Spain, the one in Cuidad Rodrigo was the best experience we have had. We can speak Spanish, but they could converse better in English than we could speak Spanish. The staff went out of their way to be helpful. We must go back next year and we must stay longer.
