Reviews for Parador de Santiago - Hostal Reis Catolicos

Review 1:The Parador delivered exactly what was expected - quiet elegance and a five star experience in every way. The location right next to the Cathedral is unsurpassed, with the interesting little streets of the old town right across the square. There was parking in a nearby garage which the hotel valet parked for us and my bike whisked away into a storage room. Best of all, reception arranged for me, a hairdressing appointment - naturally a must after 220 kms on the Camino! Nothing disappointed. This is the Parador experience

Review 2:Most of staff members could not speak English well.

Review 3:We could freely look around the facility including a great party hall, an auditorium, paintings, and so on. You can get the map of this hotel at the reception. Needless to say, the location is the best!

Review 4:Absolutely nothing.

Review 5:Parador hotels are always good and this one has to be the most historic. Truly beautiful and well worth the price paid. Four fabulous courtyards, a chapel, incredible facade. Amazing building. The staff were incredibly helpful and attentive and the location opposite the catherdral and on the main square is fabulous. Lovely room and, as usual, the breakfasts in the Parador were fantasic; Pimientos de Padron, Manchego, Tortilla, Churros. Bliss.

Review 6:Access was tricky because the route in was closed but we spoke to a policeman who redirected us and we got there in the end.

Review 7:It was a wonderful experience to stay at this 500 year old institution. There was so much to see just in the hotel, we recommend that you make the clearly signed internal tour. Perfect location right in the centre of the city.

Review 8:Bed not as comfortable as it should be for the reputation and price of a parador. Directions to the hotel made it difficult to find. There was also street construction going on and no signs were made for this.

Review 9:Historical setting. Flyer provided information about the site. Located right on the plaza of the cathedral where the Pilgrims arrive. Surrounded by restaurants and shops. Wi fi worked well.

Review 10:The hotel was excellent. I loved the ancient setting and furnishings. It was like living in history. Staff were helpful and it's close to everything in the city. Just a stellar setting. Unique experience. One of a kind!!!

Review 11:The Restaurant...disappointing. Not to say poor, because that's what really is. What a shame for a 5 star Hotel!

Review 12:The Staff is Top Class! Hard to beat their professionalism and courtesy as regards costumer satisfaction!

Review 13:We didn't like having to leave.

Review 14:We loved everything! The room was superb, breakfasts out of this world, staff were genuine and thoroughly friendly and capable. Lounges, bar, dining rooms all superb

Review 15:1. No tea or coffee making facilities in the room. 2. At breakfast, the hot food was not hot, and the plates on which to put the breakfast items were cold. This was not a rare occurrence but happened on each of the seven mornings my wife and I had breakfast. All other breakfast items were first class.

Review 16:The Parador is a beautiful hotel populated by very friendly and professional staff. We have friends undertaking the Camino during September next year and we have recommended the Parador on completion of their pilgrimage.

Review 17:It rained!

Review 18:Amazing place. Room luxurious and restaurants excellent. Cost of room about the same as a mid range hotel and comparable to a Four Seasons!

Review 19:Could not find space in the bar a couple of times even though the bar was meant to be reserved for residents only.

Review 20:Superbly located. Rooms very comfortable and quiet. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Delicious food.

Review 21:Just an odd incident. When we arrived at our room, a cleaning lady came to fix the bed into a sofa. This is understandable because they let us for an early check in at 9am (Thanks a lot). At about 10pm, while preparing for my shower, somebody came knocking urgently at our room. I hid behind the door while telling my husband to open the door. He was still sitting on our bed when the door opened and I heard a lady saying that she will fix our bed. My husband turned down the offer so the lady left. Because of that a bit scary incident, I put a stool on top of a big vase(?) at the back of the door.

Review 22:The location, hotel ambience, the staff at the reception and the breakfast.

Review 23:The weather, it rained 4 days out of 5.

Review 24:We stepped back into history to stay in this palace, huge rooms, magnificent courtyards, and right next to the Cathedral.

Review 25:The guide round the Parador is massively difficult to follow and even to read - white on light blue in microscopic dots in often dim light.

Review 26:The location is superb and the service at reception and in the restaurants equally so. Everything you come to expect from a Parador!

Review 27:Built as the hospital for pilgrims by King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel in the 16thC, we had a wonderful time walking around the building: there are very informative accounts of the architecture and history throughout.

Review 28:Staff too busy ? The beautiful big window in the room cannot stay open - with wind it bangs loudly. It's a pity, the view and atmosphere in Santiago is special.

Review 29:Gorgeous historical place. Very comfortable beds and just beautiful furniture. Great breakfast.

Review 30:Wifi is weak and doesn't always work

Review 31:Absolutely fantastic hotel. Was in Santiago after completing the Camino Frances and found the Parador to be absolutely lovely. Stayed in a junior suite (#203) overlooking the cathedral and square. Room was incredible. View was fabulous. Couldn't have imagined a better end to my camino (and while it was very unlike an albergue, there was still a wonderful feeling of comraderie.) l

Review 32:No wifi. Odd for such an upscale hotel.

Review 33:Perfect location for a camino walker. The building and history are fascinating. Perfect place to splurge on yourself after walking 500 miles and fits in with spirit of the camino.

Review 34:To be honest we had expected more. There was noisy rubbish collection outside our bedroom at 11 pm; there were no umbrellas available - as pilgrims we had not travelled with umbrellas but we did not want to walk around Santiago in rain ponchos. The coffee served at breakfast was bitter and lukewarm and the service in the restaurant in the evening was way below standard. We waited 30 minutes before being given a menu even though we had booked a table. The waiters were over worked and we poured our own wine. The food was mediocre; the scallops were barely edible because each was full of shell fragments and grit. The pork fillet was overlooked and the dessert a pretty but tasteless picture. Considering what we paid this was a vastly overpriced experience. We were charged over 30E for two whiskies - that rather took our breath away. Neither of us would return but both of us had hoped for a sublime end to our pilgrimage.

Review 35:The hotel is beautiful and in a perfect location. We were welcomed kindly and taken to our room with complete 5* professionalism.

Review 36:The front desk staff and bellman were not friendly. When the front desk agent asked for our passports upon check in we asked if they needed to see both and his response was "there are two of you! " And the bellmen were next to useless. They stored our luggage after we checked out and when we went to pick it up they pointed to the closet and said "it's in there".

Review 37:Staff at cafe were abrupt and service was poor. Dishes slapped onto table very disappointing for such a beautiful place.

Review 38:Beautiful decor and comfortable room

Review 39:Nothing really only thing I would say would be a bonus is tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms

Review 40:Location is superb literally next door to the Cathedral Santiago . Beautiful inner courtyards /cloisters . The hotel is beautifully decorated in authentic Spanish style , wide sweeping staircases , lots of lounges & quiet places to relax .Staff all very accommodating & friendly

Review 41:I arrived after 9pm and when asked if I could have dinner was told the main restaurant was full but there was another one who would see to me. I went to the other one and waited for six minutes and no one attended to me. The receptionists were matter of fact but did not go out of their way to help. My room was a very long walk from the entrance but I daresay someone has to go there!

Review 42:This is a most amazing hotel in a central position next to the Cathedral. Its furnishings an decor and beautiful. The main restaurant which I used twice during my four night stay was excellent and the staff delightful. I enjoyed it very much. The room was beautifully made up every day and there was plenty of soaps etc in the bathroom.

Review 43:No internet in the room and not enough power outlets. This was a major disappointment. Couldn't believe it in this day and age these weren't available.

Review 44:I loved the facility and being able to walk around and self tour.

Review 45:Slight noise in my room the second time round I couldn't get to stop and it returned after maintenance had a look at it? cistern from toilet?

Review 46:Staff were lovely

Review 47:WOW, what a gem to find this stunning historical hotel right in the centre of town. We feel very privileged to have been able to stay in this wonderful hotel, thank you.

Review 48:Beautiful historic hotel, very comfortable and probably the best location you could find. Rooms are of the highest quality and very quiet at nighttime. The only sound was the chiming of the bell in the cathedral.

Review 49:A beautiful historic building, full of atmosphere, set in the heart of the medieval city. In particular, the young ladies at Reception were particularly helpful, friendly and efficient especially regarding the printing out of boarding passes.

Review 50:It was lovely to be able to stay in this historic building, and to wander around the courtyards and public rooms. A great location in the very attractive main square. We stayed in a standard room which was small but comfortable.

Review 51:Nothing. The hotel is expensive, but worth it for a night or two.

Review 52:Amazing position right next to the Cathedral of St James. You get to see the pilgrims arriving. Very moving - even if you're not religious. The building complex and interior courtyards are STUNNING. Great restaurants in the vaults below the hotel. Try them both !

Review 53:Only one thing - the staff on the desk were surly, unfriendly and reluctant to help. Other staff were brilliant.

Review 54:The Parador de Santiago - Hostal Reis Catolicos is beautiful. Facilities are fantastic, breakfast was delicious and plentiful, food at dinner was superb, the room was clean and comfortable with a stunning view. The hotel is a spectacular museum with art work and artefacts at every turn. History emanates from every corner - I can't believe that I stood by the doorway to the orphanage area where mothers used to leave their babies in the Galician early morning mist .... Make sure you read the wall plaques everywhere - they explain the history of each area. The atmosphere is brilliant - a cosmopolitan mixture of people. All in all a fantastic hotel.

Review 55:I hated the place. Dark, dingy, old fashioned. needs renovating both interior and exterior. And the staff need training in good public relations. Far too overpriced

Review 56:It may be five centuries old, but we're now in the 21st; the wifi should be better and there should be about three times the number of power sockets in the bedrooms.

Review 57:This is simply one of my all-time favourite hotels on the planet. History and service in a spectacular environment. Challenge: name one other 5 star hotel in a building that's 5 centuries old!

Review 58:We had to leave early on Monday morning and you kindly made up a breakfast bag for us. Considering the breakfast we had the day before and what was available, what was actually given to us was very poor.

Review 59:The shower was quite open, therefore, a lot of water spilled onto the floor. The TV had very few English language stations. At breakfast it would be nice to have some English language papers to read (in addition to Spanish).

Review 60:Location, history of the building. The breakfast was amazing. It was a total escape.

Review 61:Wifi is too patchy and needs better signal

Review 62:This was a wonderful place to stay. Being in the heart of the city and being able to experience the history was amazing. Breakfast to die for, staff excellent, drinks on the terrace watching sun go down was lovely

Review 63:Air conditioning was not terribly effective.

Review 64:A magnificent old building beautifully maintained. Lovely areas to relax in or to have a drink. Breakfast was excellent but Restaurante dos Reis was amazing. Underground valet parking was a bonus.

Review 65:Historic building, sympathetically converted. Large bedroom (standard) and large luxurious bathroom. All spotlessly clean. Breakfast at little table overlooking the Cathedral.

Review 66:NA. except the price is expensive. It's hard to find the parking lot. We had to park the van nearby and walked to the hotel, the reception showed us map, we finally found the car by following the map.

Review 67:It's luxury 5 star hotel, everywhere is perfect. The hotel is close to Cathedral church at the square. The breakfast just like a upper class party, gorgeous.

Review 68:No parking. I was hoping to get a discount with public parking being such s prestigious hotel , even though in all honestly the parking was not expensive

Review 69:Everything central, luxurious historical building and good service+ breakfast

Review 70:Bar staff seemed uninterested in serving, clearing tables and welcoming guests. They seemed to find it difficult to smile. I guess this is poor management of this area, and maybe poor training. Odd, given the quality of the rest of the hotel.

Review 71:Beautiful hotel, located right next to cathedral on main square. Walk out the door and watch the peregrinos arriving! Sense of luxury and space. Lovely courtyards to sit in and admire. Reception staff were delightful and helpful.

Review 72:I did not like the Restaurant Dos Reis. Too expensive and portions were small. One of the two dishes was excellent the other mediocre.

Review 73:I really like the breakfast. Abundant, healthy, diversified, for all ages.

Review 74:Location right in the middle of the historical centre of Santiago, and the historical building could not have been better. Hotel was very well maintained, and the choice of different breakfast foods was impressive. A great place to rest after hiking the Camino

Review 75:Need to have more electrical outlets in the guest rooms. Our room had only one outlet in the bedroom. We were forced to juggle the charging of camera batteries and iPhones.

Review 76:Beautiful and historic building, great service, superb breakfast, excellent dinner and ideal location.

Review 77:It was an extraordinary facility, across the Plaza from the Cathedral. We felt the weight of history imbedded in the building. Signs explained the architecture and history it had played since the middle ages, as a convent and a hospital, enriched the sense of time.

Review 78:Ordered vegetarian for the special dinner, initial offering poor, but maitre de sorted out our problem and excellent food subsequently produced.

Review 79:Wonderful ambiance in this old building.

Review 80:After walking the Camino de Santiago, staying at the Parador was such a welcome luxury!! The hotel was right in the square where all the pilgrims end their journey. The staff were very helpful and helped make our stay so special. Our room was huge and very luxurious. The breakfast was EXCELLENT with so many options to choose from. The plaza in front of the hotel is filled with celebrating pilgrims, joyous tourists and people wanting to be part of a vibrant spiritual experience. Not to mention, the area is filled with outside cafes and wonderful restaurants!

Review 81:Not the hotel's fault but there were street "artists " playing non stop from 11.00 until 01.00....bagpipes, singers, etc...hard to sleep even with the windows closed, AC was only ventilation...

Review 82:super breakfast

Review 83:It was a surprise I planned that my two friends and I would stay in the Parador having just completed the Camino.I forgot my earlier credentials, they had to be posted and the Parador staff had them ready on arrival to make it possible for me to collect my Compostella. Many thanks.

Review 84:The a/c can't be controlled by guest so it wasn't cool like I wanted it. This place is awesome and the a/c wasn't a huge thing

Review 85:Super awesome place

Review 86:Staff failed to notice cracked glass in shower surround

Review 87:The location - superb, cannot be beaten. The hotel - 5 star Parador standards. The building - historically important and beautifully maintained. The staff - friendly & helpful. The breakfast - vast array of foods for every taste. The room - huge, well furnished, very comfortable bed. Enormous bathroom. Be aware of potential noise from street performers in rooms overlooking the square and side streets.

Review 88:There is nothing that wasn't well done.

Review 89:The Parador is a living Museum. You walk the Corredor's of this posh hotel and feel completely welcome by the inviting staff. The rooms are well appointed, clean and beyond expectation!

Review 90:Loved the room and the friendly staff! The location was outstanding and walking around the grounds and halls of this magnificent building was a beautiful experience.

Review 91:Squeaky doors and floors. Bad wifi.

Review 92:Luxury hotel in historical building on the square where the triumphant pilgrims walk in at the completion of their walk accompanied by pipes and loud cheering

Review 93:The Parador is a fantastic historical hotel with all the amenities. Every time I am in Santiago de Compostela I stay in the Parador - nothing else compares.

Review 94:Difficult to find in a car. You can drive right to the front of the hotel in the main square but need to go through some restricted access signs.

Review 95:Great hotel right in the heart of the city opposite the cathedral.

Review 96:The room was a bit smaller than other paradors and had no real view. Parking is available, but is several blocks from the hotel in a public garage. For older folks, there are steps to breakfast and in the hallways to the rooms.

Review 97:Loved being right next to the cathedral and seeing the pilgrims come in every day. The breakfast was excellent. The bar serves good food quite late at night.

Review 98:Weak wifi. Breakfast was OK but expected more from a Parador, but nothing to complain about.

Review 99:Location. Decor. Ambience. Historical setting. Fabulous local bread and seafood.

Review 100:When leaving the room, the door needed to be closed carefully with the key otherwise it would remain open, which happened to me several times being used to automatically closing hotel doors.

Review 101:Fabulous historic museum like building at the heart of Santiago the Compostella, closely tied with the Camino de Santiago. Nice room in beautiful courtyard.

Review 102:The small dining room where the noise made by American tourists drowned out the live music and any attempt at conversation.

Review 103:The food and service n the large dining room.

Review 104:We stayed here one night and the previous night at the Hotel San Francisco which is a little further away. We all liked it better than the Reis Catolicos because the people at the desk were much friendlier and we liked the rooms better. I recommend San Francisco if you are trying to decide between the two.

Review 105:We liked being so close to the cathedral since we had just completed walked the Camino

Review 106:We found the staff efficient, but cold. The bar area was lifeless and cold.

Review 107:I loved the location. The room was pleasant enough and was extremely reasonable. The interior of the building was lovely. The breakfast area was adequate.

Review 108:Much better level of service than other Paradores - truly a luxury hotel. Excellent restaurant with full vegetarian menu. Impossible to get a better location.

Review 109:The staff was extremely rude and extremely unwelcoming. I booked the room last December and requested a large bed as it was an anniversary treat. Room had two twin beds - not very romantic. You would think they could honor a request made 6 months in advance. Breakfast staff was a nightmare. Took forever to get coffee, and the waiter was slamming dishes and kicking open the service door. There was a bottle of champagne at the buffet, but it was never opened.

Review 110:The location, the architecture and the history.

Review 111:Booked a restaurant at this 5 stars hotel for dinner which was the formal one out of the two options. The family that came to a table next to ours was completely lacking in the manner in such a place. The young mother, just on her arrival, started changing a diaper of his baby (why here???), and later got nursing him just in front of us!!! After the dinner, I went to submit a complain to the director of the hotel, but the young lady who seemed to have no sense of business at all told us that they could not help it, and that the world had completely changed and customer was customer etc etc.... I do admit that the hotel is incomparable thanks to its location and history, but it is faced with extremely big threat due to the current management of the hotel. A big pity to say that because we were extremely happy with the food served at the restaurant.

Review 112:Overall stay was comfortable, except for one incident at the restaurant...

Review 113:The wifi was a little slow and sketchy

Review 114:Everything! Perfectly located on the plaza in Santiago de Compostela. The service was excellent, the room was large and comfortable. Great bathroom. Breakfast was exceptional.

Review 115:Wifi service is very limited...even in public areas. There is no wifi in the rooms. The carpets in the halls need to be replaced or at least professionally cleaned - the same for the carpet in the room.

Review 116:The breakfast and supper were fabulous. The staff were all courteous and helpful. The location is perfect.

Review 117:Offsite parking.

Review 118:Wonderful dinner at the Dos Reis. Excellent breakfast. Historic atmosphere on the square with the Cathedral. A bit of the Camino experience. Memorable.

Review 119:Only problem there was a concierge that seemed tired of his job and clients were an annoyance..... And I've never had to say this before anywhere.

Review 120:Only problem there was a concierge that seemed tired of his job and clients were an annoyance.....

Review 121:Ultimate luxury for all travelers, but a wonderful way to end the Camino. Rooms were excellently appointed with comfortable beds, luxurious beddings and towels, huge bathroom. Staff was wonderful and so accommodating, even to us backpackers finishing the Camino. Breakfast was delicious with a wide variety of foods. A fantastic stay in Santiago.

Review 122:Everything is spectacular in Santiago de Compostela. The strategic situation of the parador next to the Cathedral is amazing. This time we got a room with a window and we could see all the activity in the plaza. Amazing Santiago de Compostela

Review 123:Didn't much like finding a centipede in our bathroom one morning but it's hardly the hotel's fault. It was very clean. We often waited a while for bar service on the terrace.

Review 124:The staff were all great, but particular mention should be made of our waitress at breakfast. She was incredibly efficient with a brilliant smile and sense of fun.

Review 125:Ask for a room away from the bagpipers in the square otherwise you will hear them non stop throughout the day.

Review 126:The grandeur and history of the hotel are amazing. Staff are not overly friendly, but are professional and nice enough. Location is great.

Review 127:Breakfast buffet was ok but the restaurant is skippable. There is paid valet parking---but you cannot reserve it in advance.

Review 128:The hotel shares the plaza with the cathedral allowing you to visit at whatever hour you wish (we went at 7AM and had the cathedral to ourselves). There is paid valet parking---but you cannot reserve it in advance. Just drive up to the front of the hotel through the hoards of visitors---it's allowed! This is a luxury property and rooms are large and furnished with period furnishings. Take the time to explore the public spaces of this historic property, Staff is professional.

Review 129:Restaurant- Food quality was very good, however service left a lot to be desired. Slow, unorganized and missing most of dinner.

Review 130:Terrific location, great old world hotel with lots of history

The Fine Print
