Reviews for Hotel Altora
Review 1:I have stayed here 3 times before. Very handy for railway station with the steam trains on the harz bahn across the road.Single rooms are small but very good facilities.Breakfast very good. Really recommended as it is also about a five minute walk to the main square in wernigerode.
Review 2:I found the bed in my room a little narrow for a person of a slightly larger size.
Review 3:Location good for the steam railway. Breakfast has a good selection, with plenty on offer. Evening meals available, good for when the weather is bad.
Review 4:Cannot get into the restaurant sometimes but this is not a complaint.
Review 5:Location and the staff always helpful especially considering it's nearly always busy
Review 6:As a none German speaker communication with the staff was not straight forward.
Review 7:Well located for public transport,Train, bus and the Harz Narrow Gauge railway.Well within walking distance of the historic town centre.
Review 8:Not a complaint but would be nice to have a larger choice of cereals Traffic noise in early morning on the first floor front bedrooms can a bit loud if the windows are open.
Review 9:Very clean and well presented . Good beds for a sound night , Excellent free wifi connection . Good location - near station and HSB and easy walk into town centre Good buffet breakfast included with a good .selection of meats and cheese
Review 10:Really quaint hotel across the street from the steam trains. Nice restaurant with excellent food. If you are sitting at the tables by the windows, there's a miniature steam train that delivers your drinks. So cute. Staff are very nice. Overall great experience. Liked Wernigerode very much.
Review 11:Nothing
Review 12:Perfect hotel for steam railway enthusiasts! In the dining room you can watch the railway and engine sheds at work while your drinks are sent to your table by model railway! Friendly staff and good food.
Review 13:Room was very small and basic. It faced a busy road junction and emergency services sounded their vehicle sirens before 7am!
Review 14:Location, friendly staff, nice food.
Review 15:No ramps to front door for transportation of luggage made entry difficult. Limited English skills of some staff.
Review 16:Fairly close to the main train station.Good restaurant on the property. Good value for money.
Review 17:people take dogs to breakfast (not to eat them, alas). Room can be a bit hot in summer/
Review 18:excellent location, comfortable rooms. Nice breakfast, friendly staff.
Review 19:We were in Room 301, the bathroom of which didn't have adequate ventilation and was quite smelly, and hotel cleaning staff would leave bathroom door open so the smell ended up in the room and would take some time to ventilate. Also main room only had one window, and gets very hot in summer making it hard to ventilate in general. A pity, as the view from the room was fantastic.
Review 20:Great place to stay, excellent location, very good restaurant
Review 21:There's little to dislike about this hotel, but if you're not here for the trains, then the railway 'theme' of the hotel might be lost on such guests.
Review 22:Location, especially if you've come to take a ride on the Brocken Bahn (steam railway) due to its close proximity to the station.
Review 23:Only problem was the bill was based on standard charges and I did not realise and had to return to get the rate that booking.com showed.
Review 24:location, quality of food & rooms. Helpful staff
Review 25:Despite booking a 7 night stay 5 months ago and requesting a quiet room no such room had been held. Our room, 204, appeared to be the smallest and most cramped in the hotel and should really have been offered as a single. The location is on a busy main road and just 100m from the fire and ambulance station so there are frequent sirens even during the night. The "High Speed internet" was little better than dial up at times.
Review 26:Excellent location close to the railway station, old town and Lidl. A great place for guests with an interest in railways. There is an efficient lift to all floors and most of the staff were helpful and spoke good English.
Review 27:Noise from Nearby Fire station quite regular.
Review 28:Great Staff in a good well run Hotel, Easy to find on the Edge of Old town, just 5 mins, away. Good Meals in the restaurant too !
Review 29:Busy and noisy main & side roads, breakfast selection a little limited.
Review 30:Clean and comfortable hotel in a good location, especially if you're a fan of trains! Free parking and friendly staff, restaurant food very good.
Review 31:We were there only for one night!
Review 32:Everything is perfect!!! Hotel is ideal for railwayfan, but is it close to the city centyr! Breakfast is excellent too! We will be there again ( I hope soon), for several days.
Review 33:Hotel was perfect for us, quiet in the evening & just a short walk into the town. Watching the steam engines going through their paces from our room was a real treat. The hotel, staff & meals were really good. We would recommend this hotel to anyone
Review 34:This hotel is the one and special in Wernigerode for Railway enthusiasts! View of the steam Engine yard from its restaurant windows and lots of Railway items inside.
Review 35:Would have liked tea/coffee facilities in the room.
Review 36:Easy walk into centre of town, and just along the road from the station to catch the steam train to the Brocken, and the bus to Quedlinburg. Very clean, friendly staff. The area levies a tourist tax of E15 per couple, but we were given free transport and discount vouchers. The castle was excellent, much to see and the views were wonderful.
Review 37:Pillows seemed to be filled with cut up foam, wasn't that comfortable.
Review 38:Breakfast was great! Lots of options Within walking distance to train station and also the town centre. The room was nice and big and was well cleaned. I appreciated the staff making the effort to speak english so that we completely understood everything.
Review 39:Hotel has a great outlook over the Harz Mtns Steam Railway. Good view point for watching the steam trains coming and going. Close to the main railway and steam railway stations. Comfortable room, good food, nice staff and your beer arrives at your table on a wee truck pulled by a model engine.
Review 40:The smell or the airfreshner or deoderiser in the room and corridor but fortunately, it was not constantly. The choice of breakfast items was more limited, the later you got up. The choice needs to be maintained throughout, although I have no doubt that items would have been made available, had we asked. As so many British people visit and support tourism in the area, I would expect a lot more information and books to be available in english - they'd make lots more money!
Review 41:The convenience, price and comfort of the rooms. The evening menu was rather good but could have been more extensive?
Review 42:None
Review 43:Location, near to rail & bus stations & only a 5min walk into the town centre. Food, both breakfast & evening meals are excellent value for money, well presented(menus are also in English). An overall pleasant winter break.
Review 44:Floppy pillow, 2 twin beds when double requested, quite noisy with traffic passing from about 6am (quiet room had been requested.) Also very few vegetarian options on the restaurant menu.
Review 45:Lovely staff, good breakfast, tasty meals. Good value for money. Very convenient for the town and railway station.
Review 46:Please please please do something about those awful pillows before my next stay!
Review 47:Good food, good beer, clean rooms, friendly and helpful staff and very good location for those arriving by train
Review 48:Everything was perfect. I'm a raliway geek so the view from "Railway room" on the HSB-depot was really exciting. Room very well equipped, must have been renovated recently, because it looks much better than on booking.com pictures :) Delicious food in the restaurant on the ground floor with drinks being carried by a model train! Delicious breakfast. Free parking space.
Review 49:A small thing - when you take the room card out of the slot for electricity in the room it plunges you into darkness a timer on this would be a good idea, as I say only a small thing
Review 50:The view, ok I am a train crank, the food is excellent, hotel very clean, great staff good value for money
Review 51:Some staff excellent, others rather off-hand especially when we were unable to access hotel from car park at night in very icy conditions. Check in by 2100 is also a bit of an inconvenience.
Review 52:Location was close to railway station, food was good and beer delivery "by rail" was quirky.
Review 53:Service in the restaurant could be a little slow at times - it seems the waitress was also the receptionist and had to juggle the two positions. No complaints about the accommodation itself at all.
Review 54:I booked this hotel because it was convenient to the train station and because it was a good price. Unbeknownst to me the Hotel overlooks the steam train yard, and there is a railway theme throughout the Hotel - there is a model train which delivers the drinks to tables in the restaurants! For someone coming solely for the Harz steam trains, this was an absolute gem and this Hotel will be high on my list of places to stay the next time I visit Wernigerode.
Review 55:The pillows on the beds were not great, could have done with extra pillows in the rooms. No air con in the rooms. No hospitaility trays in the rooms Recepition did not operate 24 hours.
Review 56:Good location Friendly Staff Great breakfast Dinner was excellent, massive portions and drinks delivered by train. The old town and the stations were a short walk away. English speaking staff available.
Review 57:The hotel was excellent, we were made felt welcome from the moment we checked in to the time that we departed. "Railway room" is ideal for trainspotting, but although small, it did what it set out to do. Food in the restaurant is of top quality but of a reasonable price.
Review 58:Room was rather small - I usually expect twin beds to have at least some physical separation! Some traffic noise in the morning but comes with the location.
Review 59:View of trains from restaurant Cheap but quite adequate rooms Good breakfast (and with trains) Hotel railway theme and décor Well-located for town/food/shopping
Review 60:nothing
Review 61:The hotel right opposite the main rail station overlooking the steam shed of the harz railway. A 5 minute walk to centre of town. Excellent help yourself breakfast. They have a minature railway that brings your beer to some of the tables in the restaurent . When you check in you pay 2.50 euros city tax per day. The booklet you are given offers free travel on all bus lines in the harz area.Very good to get to quedlingburg
Review 62:No criticisms. We'll stay there again.
Review 63:Location, easy to find, beautiful views of five to six operational steam locomotives at any time, Resturant has a model train that delivers your drinks and/or desserts to your table. For paying your city tax at the hotel, you'll receive a coupon book that entitles you to free rides on their public buses and many discounts on local attractions such has a discounted fare on the Bimmelbahn train that takes visitors up to the castle tours. Their historic old town is extensive, well maintained and a pleasure to stroll around.
Review 64:Our room was near the road and traffic was rather noisy. However it did not spoil our stay.
Review 65:We liked our lovely big room, the beautiful breakfasts and dinners and most of all watching all the steam engines as we ate. The hotel was only a few minutes' walk from the delightful town centre and from the station. From here you can go steaming or by bus to many wonderful locations.
Review 66:convenient location across from steam train can be negative when wind blows the coal-fired steam towards hotel
Review 67:great location easy walk to town and castle great free breakfast free parking
Review 68:Not enough space for clothes/shoes etc.No tea making facilities in room. Water not replaced in room daily. Maybe air conditioning could be installed in the future as the temperature during our visit was very hot and uncomfortable. But we realize that this would be expensive and the temperatures we endured were very unusual.
Review 69:Friendly staff. My wife and I are English. Only I knew a little Germanwhich I tried to use as often as possible. I believe the staff made agreater effort to help us because we tried to use the German languagewhen we could.Location of the hotel is great for the train and bus station and only a short walk from the town center. Food was of a high quality. Especially the evening meal. Overall I would certainly re-visit or recommend to more mature, adult travelers.
