Reviews for Hotel Convento La Magdalena

Review 1:We booked this hotel for the SPA facilities but the water in the SPA and Jacuzzi was very cold, the sauna didn't work - the only thing working was the Turkish bath. Although our suite was huge, the Jacuzzi in the en suite didn't work (after I waited nearly half an hour for it to fill) and the water in the shower was hot for a few seconds then cold. The lovely man on reception did offer us a discount

Review 2:The hotel itself if gorgeous and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Review 3:If you've driving through Antequera don't trust everything your SatNav tells you! (But we'll worth your patience.)

Review 4:Rural setting. Great views. Superb facilities, fine dining, and friendly courteous service. Could not wish for more.

Review 5:The location was stunning and the food is top class. The indoor pool was very welcoming also had sauna and steam room and a small but adequate gym.We will return this was our second visit ,excellent place to relax.

Review 6:The convent was rather further from Antequera than we had appreciated, so driving home at night was a little tricky.

Review 7:Very beautiful setting in the mountains. Scenic country walk nearby where we spotted an ibex high on the crag above us. Beautiful old building with gorgeous views and our room led onto a peaceful terrace by a vegetable garden.

Review 8:What a wonderful place, quiet and very comfortable. We did like having a window with a view in the bathroom. One of the best meals we´ve had in a hotel. Attentive staff, nuts and olives were brought when we sat in the courtyard for a drink. Well signposted, we wouldn´t have found it otherwise.

Review 9:the pool was quite chilly and needed a bit of a service (tiles coming off, more cal treatment on steps etc.)

Review 10:restaurant on half board excellent food and wine. the drinks were very reasonably priced.

Review 11:Very understaffed couldn't find anyone in restaurants. Spa needs to be refurbed. Really a nice 4-star rather than 5.

Review 12:Stunning location and property. Wonderful check-in staff (male). Delicious dinner.

Review 13:We were not crazy about the dinner menu, and as it is a long way from anywhere else, we really had to eat there. Very long wait to get served, too.

Review 14:Beautiful hotel in absolutely stunning surroundings. Wild mountain views and green lawns. Staff very helpful, spa wonderful

Review 15:Staff were not very flexible, asked whether we could have a veggie meal and was told the menu "was what it was". Breakfast was 8 but we needed to leave by 8 could not accommodate 7.30 breakfast and staff did not start setting up until 8 even when we arrived at 8 they did not get butter etc for us but just went about business. Lovely hotel but sometimes got the feeling that staff felt guests "got in the way"

Review 16:This is a lovely hotel but it is very rural so need a car to get anywhere

Review 17:Location is in the mountains outside of Antequera with own golf course. Beautiful retreat with pool, spa etc. Restaurant recommendations by Guide Michelain.

Review 18:Hot Tub - water much to hot. Swim Pool - water to cold. Not enough Staff at times. Security lightong in room (when lights out) much to bright , kept us awake.

Review 19:Great Food. Nice Price. Venue - breathtaking. Room lovely. Nice beds & room lay out.

Review 20:Weak air conditioning

Review 21:Great staff and beautiful historical building in picturesque setting. Nice regional dinner menu and full breakfast. Lots to do in the area.

Review 22:not easy to find, GPS may let you down on this, just keep on driving (up the hills) and you will get there. Very remote from Antequera town, but you wouldnt basically want to leave the hotel anyway. Would have preferred the swimming pool to be out rather than in doors. Bar staff could have tried better to sell us more drinks.

Review 23:Stunningly beautiful building, hotel & surrounding. Very stylish. Sure has the wow factor!! Great dinners, fantastic breakfast buffet

Review 24:Just like the nearby golf course, this hotel needs some overdue maintenance. In today's condition, both the building and the (limited) staff try hard to live up to its 5-star rating. Qualifying for a 4-star rating might prove much easier.

Review 25:Unique, historical and quiet location, with stunning views. Every meal was a memorable event.

Review 26:Swimming pool a bit old and not as beautiful as pictured. Restaurant ok, not very spectacular.

Review 27:Beautiful building, lovely and spacious rooms and bathroom. Surroundings are stunning! Lovely place to stay, very quiet.

Review 28:Very very understaffed. No service round the pool. 1 staff member for the restaurant and bar and this meant sometimes we had to wait 45 minutes to buy a drink. No minibus service to the town so it cost 28 euros round trip just to go out. As the hotel was run on a shoe string no one stayed in. What a shame

Review 29:The staff and lovely convent

Review 30:Service at even dinner was apalling. Lack of staff. Air Con in room not fully working. Great problems finding the hotel, directions on line useless nearly gave up trying !!!!l

Review 31:Lovely property

Review 32:Absolutely beautiful decor to enjoy after a long day of road cycling. Loved my view of the vegetable garden outside my room..so relaxing and beautiful!

Review 33:The location was perfect. We stayed at the hotel as part of our cycling tour. The staff were extremely helpful. Dinner and breakfast were fantastic! Such a wonderful hotel.

Review 34:Lack of maintenance of the complex, especially in the wellness and in the restaurant... 3* hotel even score far better. Room is clean, but the shower was unable to adjust the water temp In the pool paint is flaking from the wall, showers in the wellness are not working, ... Restaurant is old & badly maintained. Just not up to a 5* standard...

Review 35:The location is great, on a hill side overlooking the mountains. Very quiet as it is 5km from the nearest town. Beautiful building Reception is helpfull on giving info. The public part of this hotel is well maintained.

Review 36:Loved the history of the property and the beautiful buildings and grounds. Staff were friendly and helpful. As a fussy eater, I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy dinner in the restaurant which was one of the best meals we have ever had.

Review 37:Outdoor swimming pool would have been good.

Review 38:Wonderful location away from the hustle & bustle of life. Privacy whilst sunbathing. Walks a real treat. Breakfast excellent.

Review 39:Although we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, potential guests need to know that this is not a 5 star hotel. Here are some of the key problem areas that need addressing: plastic flowers in the dining room broken hairdryer in the bedroom broken shower in the bedroom many light bulbs out in corridors dirty jacuzzi dead flower arrangements in corridors (even though they were hosting a wedding)

Review 40:The hotel was in an amazing location. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Good restaurant serving top class Spanish cuisine.

Review 41:However, the restaurant served limited meals with almost no vegetables (which were in minute portions and cold). It was not a menu worthy of a 5 star hotel, and very few of the guests used it. More than three times as many used the breakfast buffet, which speaks volumes of the evening offer.

Review 42:This was our second visit in three months. The hotel itself, the rooms and the service were excellent, as was the whole ambience and the spa, which why we came back and will do again, but not to eat in the restaurant.

Review 43:The menu for the evening meal was not quite to our liking. There were no starters only sharing platters which did not appeal to us. Our main courses were ,however, wonderful.

Review 44:Loved the location, away from the crowds. The only sound was of the birds chirping. The big bedroom was comfortable and had a splendid bathroom.

Review 45:There was nothing to not like.

Review 46:What a place in which to relax - whether it be with a stroll around the hotel or in the Piano Bar. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the evening meal we enjoyed in the restaurant was really something to remember.

Review 47:The Spa was dirty, not functioning and when complained to the only person on duty in reception, he said he knew and so did all the staff. The had been told not to talk about it. The sewers were stinking and whilst we were in our suite, outside was a pipe attached to a drainage pump sucking out excrement that stank out the room!!!! Their cesspit was full and I believe this situation is not uncommon if you read other reviews

Review 48:the location

Review 49:The wi-fi and internet connection were intermittent but beyong the control of the hotel during our stay. A minor problem.

Review 50:Excellent facilities with a view of the mountains and we were woken by the call of a cuckoo and song of Turtle Doves. Heaven!!

Review 51:As above

Review 52:Whole experience of this hotel was bad apart from the receprion staff . The spa was not supervised and overrun with children there were nappys bottles dirty ashtrays etc around the spa children were jumping in the jacuzzi opening and shutting doors in the sauna and playing in the gym!! The air con was not working in our room therefore difficult to sleep was reported but no one came! The meal was a disaster dining room was run down and looked dirty the tablecloth had holes the meals were overpriced and we sent two back as one was cold and one was raw duck the clam chowder had no clams in and was just creamy water when we complained the waiter was rude and then ignored us! This hotel should not have a 5 stR rating !

Review 53:Booking.com directions

Review 54:Full of character Breakfast and Restaurant Outstanding Relaxed Ambience - the barman, waiter etc seemed to do everything but always with a smile and sense of humour. lady at breakfast - superb!

Review 55:The location, atmosphere and general ambience were excellent. The staff were very helpful. Its location gave us easy access to the nearby lakes and mountains. Overall a most memorable visit

Review 56:The setting and the building and how it had been adapted to an excellent standard, yet keeping its 17th Century feel. The staff and lastly and importantly the superb dinner and breakfast.

Review 57:We had a bit of bad luck, as the ceiling of the bathromm was leaking and waterdrops fell onto our heads while sitting on the toilet. We also had apprecieted, if all the bed linen had been changed before our arrival.

Review 58:Phantastic place to relax, enjoy the calm countryside and get very pleasant services. Very good choice, if one doesn't need or want to be in town.

Review 59:Sewer smell from the bathroom - very strong one night. Some staff have problems understanding English., female staff are better.

Review 60:Location, beautiful view of surroundings. Restaurant - food and service. Pool. Antequera town and the fort.

Review 61:decoration a bit faded and the pool and poolside, whilst set in amazing situation was crumbling a little. Steam room not operational

Review 62:very quiet and peaceful. Surrounding countryside and setting very beautiful. Rooms very comfortable and clean, lovely large bathrooms

Review 63:If You find promotional offer for a 5-star hotel in quite good price, You can think that it's possible, the hotel can be in fact in 4-star standard. But this time it wasn't even 3-star standard. This hotel need staff - someone to clean rooms and pool, someone to take away fungus from the pool, someone to repair sauna, someone who can help You with luggage (in this "5-star" when You try to take the luggage out from the car on Your own, that You should repark Your car, instaed of helping You...). Hotel is quite good, but don't expect any higher standard than 3-star.

Review 64:Great atmosphere - this is really old monastery building adapted for hotel. Location - in the middle of nowhere... Breakfast.

Review 65:Minor: Spa area may a bit old-fashioned but still okay!

Review 66:Jacuzzi tub in the room, very good evening dinner & awesome breakfast as well. Friendly staff and unique atmosphere in the middle of nowhere surrounded by olive groves...Andalusian heaven!

Review 67:the music stations in the rooms did not have many options, not enough information about the story of the site/building

Review 68:the middle-age kind of atmosphere, the facilities, the renovation process that the building had gone through

Review 69:Very disappointing. On website it says rooms are soundproof and it wasnt. We had suite. I can hear people sneezing next door, walking or talking! spa was just a joke. you have to tell reception to switch sauna on!!! pool was so cold it was unberable.

Review 70:Location

Review 71:there were some hairs on the floor. Strangely there was no lighting for people in the spa area after sunset! it was supposed to be open until 10pm!..

Review 72:Good discovery and experience overall. Worth a visit!!

Review 73:There is only one Broadband cable going into Antequera, which is shared by EVERYONE. So, if it is busy (evening, weekend etc.) then you will not get access. This is NOT the hotel's fault.

Review 74:There is everything to like about this hotel. It is amongst the mountains with fantastic views and pleasant walks everywhere. The rooms are large and spacious. Ground floor rooms (numbers beginning with a 1) have a little patio with seat and garden. You are encouraged to pick the tomatoes, strawberries etc. for your own consumption. The restaurant serves wonderful food at competitive prices (3 courses with a bottle if wine & coffee cost 80€). Be careful, the portions are generous. The indoor pool is fantastic. This could be the best value 5 Star hotel that you will ever stay in.

Review 75:There was a bad smell in our bathroom from the drains.

Review 76:We like the hotel very much and often take a one night break here. The food is good and the rooms.

Review 77:The hotel is advertised as a 5*...we have found this to be greatly misleading. The facilities are not up to what it should be and the place is badly mantained. They advertise a spa yet the sauna was not working when we went, you have to book in advance if you want a massage since the only masseuse does not work in the hotel. Also, we were advised there was the possibility of trekking and cycling, but the hotel does not have maps for either and only offered vague directions. We had booked a suite well in advance and advised the hotel we were on our honeymoon, yet we get to the room and is a twin. When we pointed this out, we were told that the only double suite available was already taken, no alternative was provided. Here a note on the suites: pictures shown on booking.com are far better than what it actually was, at least in our case. I think the junior suite would have actually been a far better option since the layout of the suite was very poor and has no balcony while the junior suites come with a big balcony and is cheaper. The golf is the saving grace, but then again you have to make your way there by yourself as it is actually 2 km away from the hotel. Food was average at best compared to the rest of the food we had in the rest of Spain, but the pork was actually quite nice. Deer loin was terrible...for the first time in my life i could not bring myself to eat the dish in front of me. I was very surprised to find my experience so different from what the reviews here suggest. We stayed for 2 nights and we were glad we did not book for longer.

Review 78:the location is lovely and the convent itself is nice, but...

Review 79:A hotel with aspirations such as this one must attend to the many small areas that need to be fixed before four stars may honestly be claimed. A bar man who tries very hard but cannot fix the simplest of mixed drinks simply will not do, as an example.

Review 80:The place, the space, the location, the rooms, the atmosphere. Front of house was excellent

Review 81:nothing

Review 82:a beautiful surrounding and a historical building made our holiday perfect in combination with the superb room with privat terras. Breakfast was really delicious and diner was as good as well. We will return!

Review 83:Only stayed 2 nights

Review 84:Everything!!!! Room.Decor.Tranquil location Pool/Jacuzzi/Sauna ...Staff....& the lady who fried my 2 eggs to perfection with a smile for breakfast. I make that 6 stars.

Review 85:Not so easy to find. A pity they are using a trolley to serve and clean the tables in the restaurant which disturbed the quiet and relaxing atmosphere

Review 86:Friendly staff. Amazing location. Relaxing atmosphere Luxurious breakfast Great food. No Wifi acces code needed

Review 87:Needed that polish, a lot of areas need attention / maintenance in particular the spa area.

Review 88:Breakfast was fantastic, bar prices were good, overall ambience very good.

Review 89:Poor communications. Mobile phone couldn't be used. Road up to the hotel very dark at night (street lamps not lit). Signposting rather poor.

Review 90:beautiful surroundings and building. Spa most enjoyable and well equipped. Excellent breakfast buffet with very friendly staff. Bed very comfortable, and room large and well furnished.

Review 91:I thought that maybe the hotel was struggling to maintain it's standards of cleanliness and services. But despite this we all enjoyed our stay.

Review 92:A great place to sit back and relax. We enjoyed good food good service and great views.

Review 93:Hotel was only part of golf club complex still operating rest of site was derelict. Main focus was as a wedding venue so staff were focused on prep for that. Staff were poorly trained it took 3 hours to serve dinner. No more than 3 star standard!! Would never have booked if knew it was on complex.

Review 94:Nice building and food was good when it appeared

Review 95:Had to wait a long time at the bar for service and food.Gym has very little equipment only a few benches and hand weights , also no air conditioning .Pool will soon need updated.

Review 96:Lovely peaceful setting , friendly helpful staff .Quick check in and check out.

Review 97:Sofa bed support arms had sheared off ,sharp and dangerous.,so collapsed leaving my son in a bed sandwich in the middle of the night ! Requested a single bed in the room instead, was replaced immediately.

Review 98:Great spot with amazing views, excellent attentive staff, with no request to much trouble. A fine quality breakfast with a 8-11 humane timescale! good food in the restaurant. we had the pleasure of a Spanish birthday party for 300 at the front of the hotel so some great people watching / entertainment. all in all good for a few days, but not much other than the pool for children

Review 99:Great 5 star luxury hotel in secluded but easily accessible location. Outstanding service, food presentation and quality was excellent. I am in the hotel business in Asia and was very impressed withis establishment.

Review 100:This is a gorgeous hotel in an even more gorgeous location. There are many things to explore in the region if you are a nature-enthusiast. The staff and spa were delightful as was the food and the amazing breakfast buffet!

Review 101:Friendly, relaxing, quiet but high quality.

Review 102:Location a bit isolated but to be expected.

Review 103:Very nice and comftorble room. Resturaunt good, though a bit expenssive. Good breakfast.

Review 104:Hotel was wonderfully comfortable, a haven on the outskirts of Antequera.

Review 105:The Windows and restaurant was not clean

Review 106:Location and bathroom

Review 107:Some of the rooms are a little dark

Review 108:The location, staff and food are all excellent

Review 109:Beautiful rural location on the edge of Antequera. Spacious rooms, excellent facilities. Food very good particularly the extensive buffet breakfast.

Review 110:Nothing.

Review 111:Everything. Friendly staff. Lovely position in quiet countryside but within easy reach of town.excellent food. Cheap drinks.

Review 112:Lovely location. Quiet!!

Review 113:Location is amazing with such friendly staff, the food is amazing too and great value for money

Review 114:Staff a bit rude, and poor English knowledge Seemed a bit dated and old

Review 115:Amazing property Amazing location

Review 116:Nothing it was the worst hotel ever, it looks like a church turned to a hotel

Review 117:The pool is small

Review 118:Calm and piece of mind

Review 119:Great location, very friendly staff, high quality catering

Review 120:Liked just about everything. The room, the staff, the spa etc etc.

Review 121:Showers too hot

Review 122:Most beautiful facilities and finishings. Magnificent building.

Review 123:The hotel is in need of some tidying up/ redecoration in the communal areas

Review 124:The views, the 'spa' facilities.

Review 125:Disappointing menu and food not as good as we were expecting.

Review 126:Great location, lovely old building, very spacious room.

Review 127:The shower ... inconsistent water temperature.

Review 128:The size of the room. The views. The staff. The food.

Review 129:Everything was fantastic

Review 130:Loved the history of the building - lovely interior with cloisters and out room had a vaulted ceiling and huge bathroom.
