Reviews for Monasterio de San Miguel
Review 1:Efficient, very helpful and welcoming staff. Very nice room and very reasonably priced. Have paid MUCH more for hugely inferior accommodation. Fabulous breakfast included in price. Lots of Tapas Bars / Restaurants locally plus lovely restaurant within the Hotel itself.
Review 2:Because of age and layout of building, getting to room a little confusing. Arrived by car, and had some problems due to narrowness of streets and with parking.
Review 3:Beautiful old structure. Room was a good size. Had meal in the bar, and received excellent service from the very busy barman. Decor in hotel is beautiful.
Review 4:Fantastic room with large balcony overlooking the pool and garden. Think we had a free upgrade. Very tasteful decor, in keeping with Andalusian style.
Review 5:tv set up not good 10 programmes only the second tv in our suite was ancient and did not switch on
Review 6:location excellent .the hotel will need a make over soon
Review 7:Staff very friendly and helpful. Location of hotel only 10 mins to restaurants and bars. Good underground parking. Ferry to Cadiz - 10 min walk away.
Review 8:We arrived early we had specifically requested an early check in which the hotel had confirmed in advance... The room wasn't ready and were asked to wait for 20-30 mins more .. The staff said the will have our bags in the room if we relaxed in the cafeteria etc.. After 40 minutes when we went back to the reception the bags were still there and we had to take them up (4 Star hotel ?) The WiFi was horrible stuck in the ages i guess 2 months back we requested a room with a view of courtyard or the pool which brings the charm of the hotel we only got a room facing the inner courtyard wall so didn't really enjoy the view or the experience of staying in the hotel. The staff mentioned weneeded to pay 30 Euros more if we wanted a room with a view our roomprice was already around £60 ...
Review 9:Location was perfect close to the city centre the old monastry setting inbits and pieces were cute...scattered around the hotel.
Review 10:Bit of a problem with the drains causing a smell in our bathroom/room which we told them about & it was being dealt with by plumbers when we left. Also no International tv, Sky News etc
Review 11:We liked the location, very central. Also the lower floor is very beautiful, historical. We liked the ambience in the restaurants and particularly the bar. Very welcoming. Staff very helpful & friendly.
Review 12:Better signage in the corridors to orientate the guest. Can be a bit confusing to find your way in the warren of corridors.
Review 13:Excellent restaurant with a great menu. Highly recommend the candle light dinners in the cloister.
Review 14:Bar staff in cafeteria and young male receptionis (with beard) not helpful at all.
Review 15:Good pool area and bar/cafeteria good tapas. Juan and Juan on reception could not be more helpful.
Review 16:No bad experiences but we had a "bed only" deal, so didn't get the chance to try out the dining room menu. We did try the buffet area. The menu was "OK" but we were expecting something possibly more memorable. A bit like the 3 Tenors!
Review 17:The atmosphere and surroundings were wonderful. Staff were very attentive and helpful. The "3 Tenors Show", on the night we arrived, was a great way to start our holiday and was enjoyed by locals and hotel patrons alike. Swimming pool and surrounding area was very good.
Review 18:It was not a bad experience, but if you are looking for an intense wifi connection, stay away from room 160. I had spotty wifi capabilities throughout the hotel with my phone and the computer didn't work at all. My husband had no problems with his phone. Our wonderful vacation, in this beautiful and historic setting, wasn't upset at all by the lack of consistent wifi.
Review 19:Everything perfect. Friendly staff at reception and in the bar. Waiters came to know us since we stayed 7 days. Excellent service from room maintenance to an electrical issue. Bus stop to the beach is one street over from hotel. Lots of bars and restaurants just 10 minutes walk. Historic sites 15 minutes walking. Location is PERFECT. Quiet street. Lovely area.
Review 20:My room was over the kitchen and was very noisy. I wonder if getting a Booking.com 'Genius' reduction in rates also means getting less attractive accommodation.
Review 21:Attractive architecture and central location.
Review 22:A hotel full of character. Friendly and very helpful staff. Excellent breakfast buffet and the restaurant served superb food in the evening. Didn't get the chance to use the pool in the lovely garden.
Review 23:This is a converted monastery, beautifully done. Excellent room with terrace. Many sitting areas including the old cloisters. Has pool. Friendly staff. Best hotel out of 7 this holiday.
Review 24:Cannot really pick out aby important fault.
Review 25:Room, restaurant and charabter of interior of building.Nicee swimming pool with bar and great cafetria Very ggod breakfast and good service.
Review 26:Parking was a rip off.Got you by the short and curlies as finding a park outside was pretty much impossible. Had to lug all cases etc up the stairs from the garage to get the lift from ground floor. Could not find the hotel using booking. Com directions.Saw most of streets in downtown Santa Maria and had some interesting conversation with locals on how to find it.I have found a very short easy eay to get to the hotel. Don't travel to this hotel by yourself as if you want to book in you will need to park a long way away or risk double parking outside after which they will let you into the garage at the back. Don't need a big car as the turns are very tight
Review 27:Parador stlye monastery conversion inside. Most impressive. Underground secure parking. Great location to walk into town and the tapas bars.
Review 28:If the terrible beds are replaced, this hotel would raise its star rating and merit a higher price per night! Can't understand why not do it as many reviewers keep saying so.
Review 29:The ambiance.
Review 30:It was sad that El Puerto de Santa Maria looks so run down and many of the nice shops and tapas bars have closed
Review 31:The history attached to the place, excellent staff and breakfast and a beautiful building in a superb location
Review 32:rooms are disappointing. In need of renovation.
Review 33:The public areas of the hotel (lobby, restaurant, overall building) are very nice with historical feel. Good value for money.
Review 34:Nothing, but the room sizes were smallish, but to be expected in a converted monestry.
Review 35:The ambiance, it felt like a retreat but never lacked anything for us. The choice of Buffet (expensive) or bar sandwich (cheap) for breakfast was a great. Bar prices and portions were good. Secure Parking. Midway between Ferry and Railway was great and very friendly staff.
Review 36:staff is rather arrogant, not really welcoming. No specific issue, but instead of a warm "welcome" you will rather hear some mubling and will be left standing alone until they really start checking that you might need some assistance - in the restaurant, in the cafeteria, at reception... Beds are really uncomfortable, very firm matresses; we booked the Valetin Dinner which took place in the nice restaurant, but the food itself was rather medium quality and service again poor - they also didn't even put any kind of decoration for this special dinner they offered, no candle, no flower, nothing.
Review 37:very nice building with an amazing potential of being a good hotel... large Hotel owned parking lot 13 EUR per night). Breakfast is not really good, but you can chose the Cafetaria where you can have some toast / bread with ham or jam at 2,50 EUR - nice alternative if you don't want to have a full buffet breakfast
Review 38:Although we booked a "Superior Twin Room", and undoubtedly got this, it was actually no better or furnished than an ordinary double room in any 4 Star hotel. Breakfast had most things on offer that you would expect from a 4 star hotel but the bacon and scrambled egg were somewhat cold and little things were missing like hot tomato halves, mushrooms and quince. Also frequently the tea/coffee machine only contained luke-warm water. There was a microwave to remedy this on a DIY basis. One morning there was no orange juice, no glasses to put it in and no cups in the breakfast room for tea or coffee. Staff were less than helpful about this shortfall. I commented on this to Reception and they waved the 13 euro a day parking charge, 39 euros in total as a result which was very good of them although not requested. The meat in the main course of one meal we had in the cafeteria could have been used to re-sole my shoes. I did not complain but really should have sent it back. One night we were very "short changed" on sherry drink measures before a meal in the cafeteria.
Review 39:Staff attitude and helpfulness was excellent, especially at Reception, except for the breakfast staff who were of moderate help at best. The public rooms were spotless and palatial but a little cold temperature wise which is understandable given the sheer vast size of the place. The main central courtyard was glazed which helped. The Cafeteria was both warm and welcoming and offered a reasonable menu and a Menu del Dia which we had on 2 nights because the main restaurant did not open until quite late, for us. The bedrooms and bathroom were warm but with the opportunity to vary this. The hotel was central, easy to find and the underground parking spacious.
Review 40:Surprisingly, an excellent hotel like this had run out of fresh orange juice.
Review 41:Friendly staff; nice atmosphere; fascinating historic building; close to Jerez and Cadiz; parking in hotel garage with a charge or free outside; good wifi;
Review 42:The room we were assigned initially was not of an acceptable standard. The decor was drab and dated, the bed was poor and the bathroom smelled. If we had not been offered an acceptable upgraded room we would have looked for another hotel.
Review 43:Location was excellent and close to town centre restaurants and access to the main road to Cadiz. We got an upgrade at no extra cost when we complained about the poor standard of the first room we were offered and this upgraded room was very good. Staff were very pleasant.
Review 44:Service- Called room service and they don't understand English, I had a hard time getting hot water as they transfer the phone from one person to another for at least 4 times! Which made me a bit fed up. Receptionist does not really understand English. No kettle in the room, which caused some inconvenience. A bit eerie especially at night because of the pictures and orange lightings.
Review 45:Breakfast is good. Only one waiter to serve in the restaurant, very efficient and they replenish food pretty fast.
Review 46:It was such a delight to be in such a well restored and converted building, the public rooms were amazing particulary the Auditorium and Central courtyard.
Review 47:The bathroom layout could be improved; we stayed in two different rooms and in both it was actually quite hard to scramble out of the bath tub (the shower was above the bath), squeezing past the glass screen and into the small space between bath and bidet.
Review 48:Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff who provided us with more information than the local tourist office. Spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean rooms and bathrooms. Beautiful swimming pool surrounded by tropical gardens and a great-value bar/ cafeteria.
Review 49:Room was a little basic for a 4* hotel, no lock to the safe (assume it had to be hired from reception) and no tea/coffee making facilities.
Review 50:Beautiful hotel in excellent situation, welcoming staff who were extremely helpful. Parking was easy and secure, lovely pool (although in the shade in the afternoon), well kept and original. Room was very quiet.
Review 51:The monastic vaulted ceilings. the peaceful surroundings and excellent staff in every area. The special breakfast offer is a great idea and means guests stay rather than look elsewhere. Could not fault it.
Review 52:No mini bar in room.No facility to borrow iron/ironing board - everything has to go through the hotel laundry. Garage is expensive and was often full. But if you don´t mind walking you can park for free on the surrounding streets - difficult to find spaces in the height of summer though.
Review 53:Location, price and staff. Has a great cafe attached if you don´t wantto spend 10 euros on breakfast! Ate dinner once on the final evening atthis was excellent. Loved the quiet swimming pool too.
Review 54:nothing,
Review 55:This hotel is beautiful, a real gem, the staff was very good and friendly. The pool was big and warm with beds all around and a bar where you could get food and drinks near the pool. The decoration was excellent it was like visiting a museum with paintings and furniture scattered all over the hotel. We loved it a lot, there is parking(paying) and a lift, a nice restaurant with good food. No parking at the front so you need the parking. I would definitely go back there .
Review 56:Nothing
Review 57:Great position for bird watching areas
Review 58:The interior preserving the character of a former monastery.
Review 59:Friendly staff.location good for us.secure parking
Review 60:All good
Review 61:Lovely hotel,steeped with history
Review 62:The staff were lovely and helpful the restaurant wasn't as good as we expected but over all the hotel was excellent and would go back
Review 63:Resturant had a block booking so it was fully booked but we were recommended an excellent alternative
Review 64:A bit noisy in the room.
Review 65:Great atmosphere!
Review 66:The rooms smelled bad, the beds were hard and the carpet was filthy.
Review 67:The eating facilities
Review 68:Experience was excellent
Review 69:Excellent staff
Review 70:No dislikes, just different !
Review 71:Historically fabulous !!
Review 72:Very hard bed.
Review 73:Superb service.
Review 74:No problem
Review 75:Grand comunal areas and convenience to centre of town Our room overlooking the pool was quiet
Review 76:Interesting Hotel with some History, easy to walk to the town, port etc.
Review 77:Bed a bit hard, but didn't ruin the stay.
Review 78:Loved the building and artwork.
Review 79:Nice balcony overlooking pool. (Superior room)
Review 80:No fresh orange juice at breakfast
Review 81:How hard the staff work to give you a great expereince
Review 82:Wifi was very slow and TV set was dated.
Review 83:Excellent location and charming hotel.
Review 84:nada
Review 85:la tranquilidad
Review 86:Beds awful, no restaurant.
Review 87:Lovely historic building. Good value
Review 88:Scrupulously clean, spacious and a beautiful building in its own right
Review 89:Very professional staff and relaxing atmosphere. Would definitely stay there again, and recommend to others.
Review 90:Uncomfortable beds. Bar staff didn't know how to make cocktails!
Review 91:Location, friendly staff, good facilities
Review 92:Shame the pool was closed which we were not informed of!
Review 93:Staff and facilities great.
Review 94:Had to drive to the best beach.
Review 95:Close to town centre, very clean and spacious. Very easy to find.
Review 96:A great maze-like building with lots of fascinating history, located right in the centre of this idyllic port town. Strongly recommended.
Review 97:Decor - outdated Staff not very friendly Ben Linen / towels
Review 98:Building
Review 99:All of it was good.
Review 100:Streetnoise all night
Review 101:Spacious rooms, nice tapabar, very clean, helpfull staff
Review 102:For the price the rooms seemed a little "old fashioned"
Review 103:Location and the actual building. Also breakfast was decent
Review 104:Hotelrooms very different style from common area's. Boring like a cheap hotel along the motorway. We discovered alone in our room 3th floor that we didn't had a balcony. While most rooms did. Would be nice if we got the choice, but no communication about that. Nothing to do in this little town of 'gone glory'. None of the old buildings are restored. A poor and touristic place.
Review 105:Big, cool and tranquil hotel. Common areas authentic decorated like the old monastery, combined with a classic international style. All very clean! Swimmingpool big and calm with a cafetaria with good service. All staff very good service.
Review 106:Bit pricey for the quality of room. Possibly bumped up for the MotoGP. But from experience that is the norm.
Review 107:The building is very historic, and ornate, which is not always what your partner wants (NB to self !) Reception staff are very helpful. The in-house restaurant evening meal was superb with attentive well trained staff, and very reasonably priced, I was relieved to find. There is a secure underground car park at an additional cost. If you are there for the MotoGP, Puerto de Santa Maria is where the loons congregate to do burn outs and rev limiter trials - Very entertaining!
Review 108:The cleaniless of the floor around the pool and the pool-longchairs could be much better and should be cleaned (washed with clean water) every day... The windows of the kitchen are giving at the pool and poolterrace...sometimes the kitchenstaff are shouting (when arguing?!) and that disturbs the peace at the pool and the lunch on the terrace....sometimes...a lot.
Review 109:Very nice staff!, especially Pedro and José-Maria are men who know how to treat you in the restaurant and bar: polite, classy and friendly!! Nice spacy hotel with lots of authenticity!
Review 110:Service in the hotel bar was a bit slow and 'reluctant'. Otherwise not much not to like.
Review 111:Very calming building, cool and elegant. A good place to relax away from motogp frenzy. It was quiet on our last day there and being at the pool felt very exclusive.
Review 112:why do Spanish hotels never use comfortable mattresses on their beds?
Review 113:central location and good hotel underground car parking. Excellent cafeteria open all day for drinks and snacks.Staff very helpful throughout our stay. Missed the Osborne Bodega tour which was closed so maybe next time!
Review 114:this is A beautiful and atmospheric hotel in a gem of South Western Andalucia, we loved our two days here with our young daughter... So close to the fabulous local seafood restaurants, which are out of this world!
Review 115:We missed the ferry to Cadiz as it was obersubscribed andwe had notbooked early in the morning. However we drove down in the car and parkedat San Antonio car park in Cadiz.Nice lunch in La Dorada near the ferry.
Review 116:This was our second visit to the hotel but on this occasion with ourdaughter and her husband.Everything was as expected:professionalstaff, clean bedroom, very good choices at breakfast.Perfect period forthe amazing Easter procession which was very moving and even moreamazing than the huge processions in Marbella.People were very friendlyand explained some of the religious traditions
Review 117:The double bed was rather narrow for a four star hotel - expect king size in this class of hotel. The lighting in the rooms is rather poor. The mini-bar only had a tiny selection of the drinks listed on the price list. Our rooms were on a mezzanine floor that involved several flights of stairs as well as a lift, and there was no offer of help with luggage - not good for the elderly or infirm El Puerto de Santa Maria is a very unattractive place, and the centre is quite a long walk from the hotel.
Review 118:The hotel is a beautifully converted monastery, with large comfortable rooms - we had a separate sitting room, and well appointed. The bathroom was also excellent, although our friend's bathroom next door was a bit smelly until re-cleaned. The hotel cafeteria is very good and serves an excellent cheap breakfast (do not eat breakfast in the hotel restaurant). Each room has a safe (collect the keys at reception). The hotel is close to the train station and it is only a 10 minute ride to the much more attractive Jerez.
Review 119:The quality in restaurant Bovedas was better 2 years ago.At this moment its just ok for the price you pay.(there is to less staff in las Bovedas to garantee the service you expect from them)There are many restaurants in the nabourhood so its easy to walk in the citycenter to discover. They have new coffeemachines at the breakfast buffet but the taste is not realy nice.
Review 120:Wonderful stay again at this hotel and we will return again sometime... Good staff very friendly and it feels good to be their guests.Parking is a big plus, but should be cheaper for guests.
Review 121:- maybe the time of our visit was not the best since the town was very quiet (March/ weather was bad etc?)
Review 122:- the history of the hotel and the way that that history has been preserved in the decor of the premises - breakfast was excellent - in our opinion it was Parador quality!
Review 123:we've got special prices in a low season with booking, and aloso a beautiful suite for nothing more, so the value for money was excellent ! This hotel deserves a lot, the place is incredible, old but actual, great, in the beautiful old center of Puerto Santa Maria. We loved everything !
Review 124:Despite I am big expreso fan, Monasterio offers the worst breakfast coffee ever I have had. Really spoiled my morning :(
Review 125:Fantastic old style building, great facilities lokated in the middle of "Puerto". Room couldn't be more amazing, nice balcony looking to the "Cadiz marismas", sun shining all day long and pool below.
Review 126:The staff wasn't friendly, my room was adjacent to an elevator when halls and halls of rooms were empty.
Review 127:The common areas were comfortable and tastefully decorated.
Review 128:El Puerto de Santa Maria is a bit of a dull place. Not as lively as Sevilla, Cordoba or Granada. The hotel is very big.
Review 129:Beautiful building. Friendly staff. The hotel has a parking garage. Situated near Cadiz and Jerez, it a good place to stay if you want to visit these cities.
