Reviews for Gran Hotel Sol y Mar
Review 1:Breakfast is really good with loads of choice but pricey if they're not included. Recommend you get a room with breakfast. Only ate in hotel one evening, pricey and not value for money in my opinion.
Review 2:Modern clean hotel with lots of facilities . Great beds, large and comfy. Lovely roomy power shower, and we'd only booked a basic room. Rooms cleaned daily with fresh towels. Should have had a room with a view though as the ones without are gloomy.
Review 3:The indoor pool is part of the spa and quite expensive to use. I do feel this should have been included within the cost as it states having the use of an indoor pool. Obviously any treatments optional extras.
Review 4:The personal touches were lovely, they sent a letter of congratulations for my husbands birthday and delivered a fresh rose on New Years Eve. Excellent location. The buffet was lovely.
Review 5:The toilet seats are too high! I'm not very tall and my feet were off the ground. Same for the bidet. A small footstool would have helped.
Review 6:Friendly staff. Managed to upgrade room without any problems. Excellent variety and quality of food in restaurant.
Review 7:It's annoying to have to pay for parking when the rates are not clear at the time of booking.
Review 8:Most of the staff were very friendly at reception especially David who was particularly helpful.
Review 9:The only thing that was slightly disappointing was, I booked this trip for my mother's Special 60th birthday and this was made clear at the time of booking but there was no mention of this during our stay.
Review 10:The hotel itself was absolutely faultless! We had a Sea View room with the most beautiful view, it was clean, staff were always so helpful, facilities and location was perfect and the breakfast buffet was lovely. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone.
Review 11:The fact that your website does not inform clients that they need to bring passports to hotels in Spain even if you reside there. Fortunately we live not far away but wasted an hour or two retrieving both mine and my wife's!
Review 12:Central location
Review 13:We went for the evening meal and were surprised to find it was buffet style. The food was fine, but uninspired. The cost of this meal was excessive. Two buffet meals and two glasses of house wine for 66 euros is ridiculous.
Review 14:A great location right on the beach and close to the main shopping area. The staff were friendly and efficient. The hotel was modern and spotlessly clean.
Review 15:Can't find fault with the hotel, facilities, location, staff and food. We stay twice a year and the hotel never fails to impress us. You must try the spa out too.
Review 16:Hot food is served tepid and no effort to keep warm. No plate warmer. Restaurant is laid out randomly with no thought to convenience of guests. Items not where they should be. Guests wandering aimlessly looking for simple things like spoons, jugs, bowls etc. Then giving up. Not enough staff to assist. Asked at reception about information on rebooking. Was told to look at he hotel website and then given a price list in spanish. Extemely unhelpful.
Review 17:Comfort and cleanliness of room. Great location
Review 18:I enjoyed the variety and quality of the food in the dining room but the food was never hot enough. The only time you managed to get hot stuff was the soups, they were always hot and the childrens section had hot food. The adult section for the food was always lukewarm even cold unless you took the food from where things were being cooked. this was my only criticism of the Hotel.
Review 19:I liked everything about the hotel and the staff etc and the comfort and facilities. I liked the fact that the Beach Club opens at 10.00 and you dont have everyone going to put towels down on the loungers.
Review 20:Some food cold at the buffet Cost of car park Poor wifi Dark corridors
Review 21:Great location if you have a sea view room Efficient staff Lots of little extras
Review 22:Exceptional help from Sylvia at reception when I had a problem with a deflated tyre on my car. Please pass on our thanks to her James Carter Room 335
Review 23:Parking was a problem
Review 24:Everything was just what a hotel should be,clean, modern, lots of facilities, near to beach, good food friendly helpful staff, we have stayed there twice and would certainly do so again
Review 25:Nothing- it was all perfect
Review 26:Excellent hotel in every way. Clean, comfortable rooms, amazing views, delicious breakfast, beautiful spa, infinity pool exquisite
Review 27:Nothing.
Review 28:Room was spacious and very comfortable. The breakfast was inclusive and was quite incredible, so much choice and the best breakfast buffet we have ever experienced.
Review 29:A couple of times i found dead insects in the food, but I told the staff and they got rod of it immediately. I guess it is unavoidable when it comes to food for insects to be attracted by it. The cleaners didn't clean every corner of the room, for example, where we put our beach bags there was always a lot of sand and they never really cleaned it. I guess they were afraid of touching our things so that in case something got missing, we wouldn't blame them for it. The most annoying and even sad thing was that so many people do not speak English! Apart from the receptionists, everyone seems to have a problem speaking English... seriously, it's the 21st century, get educated and stop "protecting" your language.
Review 30:The buffet was very nice, and especially the breakfast was very rich. Dinner was quite good as well, though I wished they had a grater choice of meat. Rooms were very spacious and the bathroom was nicely arranged. Best of all were the kind receptionists who always helped us out with any problem we had, from finding a doctor to calling the stupid bus company ALSA for returning our money (technical issues with the website). All in all, it would have been a perfect calm holiday if one of us didn't get sick and have to stay in the room all day.
Review 31:Amazing location, hotel, breakfasts, spa, facilities. Nothing was too much trouble. The amazing smell wafting round the hotel was Heavenly. The lavender pillow spray and toiletries were a lovely touch, as was the fruit and bottled water every day. It really is a special place.
Review 32:The facilities, and the attention to detail, water available in rooms, sun cream in pool area towels available for the pool.lovely staff, who appeared friendly and happy.
Review 33:Everything about this hotel was outstanding. They have the best breakfast we've ever had at a hotel - eggs cooked to order, 20 different meats and cheeses, fresh fruit, juice and bread, desserts, and champagne. Wonderful location on the beach and close to lots of restaurants. Terrific view. Great facilities and services - parking, spa, pool, and even a market. Best bed I ever slept in.
Review 34:The only bad things I would comment on would be the fact that the pool has a lot of flies sometimes and the sun loungers could do with a little upgrade as some were broken but everything else was great, those really are minor complaints in the grand scheme of how good the hotel is.
Review 35:I just stayed at the Gran Sol Y Mar for the past week and had a lovely time in this beautiful luxurious hotel. The staff are very attentive and pleasant and the facilities at the hotel are brilliant. The sea view room is well worth the money and such a beautiful view over the beach and sea, waking up to that everyday is extremely relaxing! The breakfast buffet was amazing and you are spoilt for choice with different foods, I went bed and breakfast only and I'd strongly recommend going full or half board if you struggle with certain foods as the hotel offers the best choice out of the restaurants nearby. The ambient mood in the hotel created by the dim lighting is very atmospheric and you will definitely have a relaxing stay!
Review 36:Great hotel in stunning location especially enjoyed the spa breakfast very busy but only to be expected. There was never a queue of more than a minute
Review 37:The double bed was unfortunately 2 singles, made up as singles and pushed together. Lots of broken mugs for breakfast.
Review 38:Pool area and sunbed policy, 12pm check out, room size and facilities, location next to beach, huge breakfast selection. Just perfect.
Review 39:Noisy & inconsiderate northern Irish guests returning to their apartment (2 rooms away from our hotel room) at 5am until 6.30am dragging furniture & being loud on their balcony! Shocking disregard for everyone else's valuable holiday time. Staff heroically relocated us in the morning but it was a stressful night
Review 40:Really helpful & professional staff. Couldn't have asked for more from reception, pool staff, breakfast staff & cleaners.
Review 41:very small pool for amount of guests set away from hotel and poorly set out - very slow service in lounge bar in the evenings with only max 2 people on
Review 42:fantastic rooms with good facilities - Le Champ bar cool in the evenings and great for Wedding day/night
Review 43:2nd bad low quality Pure room service food Minibar only water and cola. Does not give back money for beach towels. Crowded beach
Review 44:Fresh orange at breakfast
Review 45:Staff, particularly at reception were of little help and extremely slow. Wifi was non-existent. Lifts were old, in bad condition and extremely slow
Review 46:Location was great, hotel pool is perfect, breakfast was brilliant
Review 47:Location is great. We had a room with sea view and it is highly recommended. Pool area very nice and easy access to the beach and promenade. Large selection in the breakfast buffet with two cooks making you the "tortilla" you want. Very friendly staff and all in all a terrific hotel.
Review 48:Wifi
Review 49:This was our fifth time at the Solymar hotel, we love the hotel, we love the staff, we Love the area right near the beach with loads of shops and restaurants. We cannot fault it, nothing bad to say reception staff always happy and willing to help.
Review 50:Lovely hotel and beautifully positioned on the beach. Staff very helpful and always smiling. The roooms were big and very clean and kept in exellent condition. A hotel I would recommend to anyone for a delightful stay in Calpe.
Review 51:The lift and wifi wasn't good. The lift is quite slow and your waiting for quite a while for it! The wifi is quite poor as you can never get signal and it cuts out all the time.
Review 52:Love the breakfast and the spa was amazing! Staff were always soo friendly. Beautiful pool. Nice location.
Review 53:Long dark corridors leading to rooms. Elevator as sole access to pool/beach club. Required deposit of 10 euros per beach towel, when hotel already had our credit card on file. Expensive compared to other top hotels visited during our seven day trip.
Review 54:Very friendly, helpful staff. Easy walking distance to many restaurant choices. Nice beach & promenade.
Review 55:Supportiveness of the staff was extremely poor based not only on my personal experience, but also families we met during our stay there
Review 56:Hotel was good and facilities are nice. Conveniently located at the beach and quite clean
Review 57:Lack of food for vegetarians at the lunch buffet. Lots of salads had hidden fish/chicken in them.
Review 58:Our third visit. Lovely, clean, well appointed hotel.
Review 59:We did not like how the internet did not work the last week, but we know there was a problem for the whole hotel, so we understood that.
Review 60:We liked the service, the kids club, the pool and beach environment and the location of the hotel. The staff were friendly and smiled all the time.
Review 61:The food more so the evening meal there was very little choice for vegetarions and most of the food on display was cold with very long waiting times to try and obtain any hot food and while waiting rest of food was cold Value for the money was poor you could eat out in Calpe getting a hot meal for a lot less
Review 62:The location and sea view
Review 63:Wedding being held on Saturday so we were not able to use pool for afternoon. Hotel also had conference on we had to wait to long to get a seat in the restaurant in the morning. These 2 things need to be explained to people when booking their holidays if hotel is going to continue doing this
Review 64:The food was good, hotel lovely and clean, bedroom good size and bed was excellent.
Review 65:First I liked the hotel location. Then the hotel's design is special. In my opinion, conditions and services are above 4 stars. The quality and diversity of food were above my expectations. I traveled to several countries in Europe and in Turkey. I felt wonderful and elsewhere, but I can say that here I felt really spoiled. Thanks!
Review 66:The poolside was very overcrowded and very like a Spanish holiday camp. There are static umbrellas and so a bit hit and miss whether you have shade or the blistering sun. Solymar, it is time you had portable umbrellas for guests to use and move around as required. This hotel doesn't come cheap and I would expect this. Do away with the free sun cream/after sun and provide umbrellas instead. Most people have their own sun cream anyway. You also need to check up on people coming to the pool as I'm certain that some residents were bringing their friends in. Could also do with side screens on the pool showers which were in constant use and drifting all over me when I got a nearby sun lounger. Not a restful experience and I left the pool area that day quite early on.
Review 67:Top notch service with friendly staff, a fantastic choice of breakfast items to include gluten free. The beds were roomy, the shower was glorious and large. Lots of extras in the room e, g, razor, toothbrush paste, nail file, soaps, shower gel, shampoo, body lotion etc.... There were also English channels on the TV and chocolates on your pillow plus complementary coca cola and water in the fridge. You can hire pool towels for 10 euros returnable.
Review 68:The only downside was the breakfast food was not very hot.
Review 69:Very friendly staff through out the hotel,it had great views overlooking the beach. rooms were well maintained.
Review 70:Beach club staff are not helpful. Not serving guests setting near to the pool although there were more than 4 staff hanging around.
Review 71:Reception staff are great. Nice view. Best hotel.
Review 72:-
Review 73:Everything is perfect - fascinating beaches, location, views; very comfortable pool area, rich breakfast, 5 star service and staff, wide rooms. A lot of things to do around - cliff with beautiful nature park, old city, shops and restaurants.
Review 74:I had to book a conference room for 1 hour, as we went as a family for a wedding and despite the fact that we went as a group of 50 and all stayed in the hotel I was charged €175 for the hour which I felt was very high considering how much we had spent already in the hotel.
Review 75:Hotel was lovely with good food, lovely bar and the rooms were very clean. Lovely spa in hotel. Location was amazing with pool looking right onto the beach.
Review 76:Wifi was a bit hit and miss and dropped out a couple of times during the week.
Review 77:The Hotel is excellent. Having a Supermarket and Parking beneath it is very helpful. Have stayed here before and will stay again.
Review 78:Honestly... The lifts to the apartments but after I talked to the staff the issue was rectified within hours.
Review 79:Everything. From start to finish for 140 guests and a wedding couple this hotel has been a pleasure. There is not 1 complaint from the whole wedding party...
Review 80:Nothing bad to say about this Hotel
Review 81:The staff were very helpful and welcoming. The rooms have excellent facilities we had room with sea view The food was very good with lots of choice
Review 82:Only problem was the amount of sun beds by the pool! But it didn't take long to get one and the beach was a 30 second walk away anyway!
Review 83:The hotel was in such a good location, fantastic food and so clean and well kept!
Review 84:the only thing i didnt like was having to leave we had a fabulous time and cant wait to go back
Review 85:The staff were very helpful, nothing was to much bother from reception staff to waiting staff
Review 86:Having read reviews before I left I was a little concerned but there was no need. From the moment we checked at reception with Sylvie the staff could not have been more pleasant and helpful. The most amazing was breakfast. It finishes at 11am on Sundays and we arrived (expecting to be turned away) at 11.10am. The maitre d made us very welcome and said it was no problem and we were not made to feel uncomfortable in the least. The staff in this hotel have to be commended they are superb
Review 87:Room was outstanding, especially bathroom, linen and towels exceptional, food and dining room very good, staff good and knowledgable of good restaurants in the area, gave you a bottle of water on leaving.wifi, safe and parking all good.
Review 88:Although the pool has a stunning view of the beach I found the area was far to small to accommodate the volume of guests the hotel holds. We went off season and still struggled to grab a sun lounger everyday.
Review 89:The room was very spacious and nicely decorated. They beds were bery comfortable and perfect for two friends to be able to share with room to spare. The bathroom was clean and again very big, with a separated toilet so it was possible for two people to use the area at the same time. The breakfast was brilliant with choice for any type of eater, the food was always fresh and tasted amazing. The view from the restaurante area was spectacular as it looked straight out onto the beach and onto the penon.
Review 90:only down side in the room was the twin beds pushed together. ( which was advised on reservation) Car park is supposedly at a reduced rate for hotel members but €14 per day is still a bit steep.
Review 91:Loved the location and everything about the hotel. Breakfast is probably the best I've EVER came across. Many many restaurants a stones throw away.
Review 92:The PLASTIC under sheet!! Totally horrible, thou we understand that the hotel wants to cover the maddress and stop the spots.
Review 93:Good service, nice location, good hotel
Review 94:- Expensive parking - Limited lunch options at the pool side - When we visited the champagne bar the personnel was busy fixing their administration rather than serving customers.
Review 95:- Great view from the pool - Centrally located in Calpe
Review 96:Nothing... perhaps two things worth mentioning... Although parking at the hotel is very convenient it's pricey for a weeks stay (around €80) Pool can get crowded with not many sunbeds.(although the beach is right on the door step and excellent should that be the case)
Review 97:Mostly everything, Staff, food, the service and hotel all excellent
Review 98:The wifi did not work, if you need to work or keep in touch with emails do not go. The pool is freezing, impossible to go swimming. The staff are poorly trained and unable to deal with complaints
Review 99:The location is the only thing going for this hotel.
Review 100:Apparently we witnessed what was typical Calpe weather - windy. Unfortunately our room, no. 922, on the top floor was facing the prevailing wind which was quite strong thus not allowing us to take advantage of our lovely terrace and sun beds. This of course is not a fault of the hotel but something to be aware of.
Review 101:Very spacious and immaculate superior room on the top floor with a v large terrace. Plenty of choice at buffet breakfast of excellent quality.
Review 102:The absence of tea/coffee making facilities in the room is a recurring gripe in European hotels, but something we still tend to expect in 4* establishments.
Review 103:The hotel is very clean, well equipped, excellently located on the beach, and spacious. With lots of choice when it comes to bars and restaurants, both in the hotel and on the doorstop, plus the sound of breaking waves combined with superb views, this will be a winning choice for many visitors.
Review 104:Nothing, would have benefited from providing customer bathrobes.
Review 105:The bedrooms were massive in particular the bathroom. The shower was the best every experienced. Hot and fantastic water pressure.
Review 106:The buffet dinner wasn't great although the view from the room was lovely. The wifi in the rooms was patchy- 1 room could stream films, another couldn't connect enough to get emails. Not much entertainment in the evenings. Pool was very cold- heating in low season would make huge difference.
Review 107:The hotel was clean and comfortable in a great location. Staff were friendly and the spa facilities were very nice with children allowed in between 10-12am which was great for families. Supermarket below hotel and large empty fridge handy (but bar not expensive). Sea view rooms def worth extra money but rooms with lower numbers on each floor had obstructed view ie 633 much nicer than 618.
Review 108:Calpe is not very interesting nor beautiful. This is one of those coast Spanish city completely covered with buildings. The hotel has over 300 rooms, clearly not a boutique hotel...
Review 109:Very nice view for breakfast. Nice staff. Great breakfast/
Review 110:The room, although large and very clean, was internal facing with no view and was rather dark and gloomy.
Review 111:The location is very good, in the centre of town but very close to the beach.
Review 112:I would have liked to stay longer
Review 113:The hotel staff are always friendly and welcoming the rooms are a good size (sea view room) and the breakfast is very good with a wide choice to suit everyone
Review 114:Only one fault and that was our room was on the outside overlooking the street. Sea view is a must !!
Review 115:Staff helpful and friendly. Great location for local restaurants and beach. Clean and comfortable rooms.
Review 116:The upgrade to a balcony room was very disappointing as the balcony looked out onto the flats opposite, and had no sea view. The room with the balcony was one of the smallest in the hotel, and did not have a separate shower cubicle, which is normal in all standard accommodation
Review 117:Breakfast on first day was not hot but the staff handled our dissatisfaction really well.
Review 118:Excellent location, friendly staff, very comfortable bed slept really well
Review 119:Extremely busy at breakfast. Very large touristy hotel.
Review 120:Good location near beach. Good variety at breakfast, but lacked quality. Huge room with beach view.
Review 121:loved everything!
Review 122:every member of staff was welcoming...friendly and efficient...room service prompt...buffet dinner and breakfast varied and plentiful...
Review 123:The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was excellent, the Nespresso machines were a great improvement on the coffee in a jug.
Review 124:Housekeeping removed half empty shore gel and shampoo and did not replace with new. Egg station at breakfast sometimes empty.
Review 125:Staff, food,, the comfort and the stunning views.
Review 126:We were not impressed with the prices of the Spa treatments and expected free entry to the Spa itself.
Review 127:Hotel location was perfect, room was very spacious and everything (apart from coffee table) was in good condition. View from balcony was spectacular and the staff were very friendly.
Review 128:No carpet in the corridors makes it noisy at night, you can hear the tap tap of heels. The hotels car park is expensive, but you can find off street parking reasonably nearby.
Review 129:A very nice standard 4 star hotel. Lovely big rooms and bathrooms, all amenities incl toiletries, comp slippers, fruit, water and soft drinks in the mini bar. Free wifi. Good location for many cafes/bars/restaurants and Arenal beach.
Review 130:We were there for 5 nights and I can honestly say there was not one thing that we could have complained about.
Review 131:From the moment I was greeted at reception on my arrival until I left I was totally impressed with the Sol Y Mar. The location is excellent, the décor and layout is 1st class and every member of staff was very pleasant, professional and helpful in every way. One of the best hotel stays I have had in a very long time.
Review 132:Lovely big room good sized bed and lovely bathroom with large shower. Lots of nice touches. Goodie bag in bathroom, fresh fruit and water with compliments. Walk straight out to the beach. Would definitely return. Staff were very helpful too.
Review 133:Somewhat haphazard training of a junior staff member seemed to take place when we were checking out; it didn't feel as though it was part of normal procedure; smell of cigarette smoke in room after breakfast prior to departure. Both of these incidents however seem at odds with the overall experience which was superb.
Review 134:The welcome, the rooms, the breakfast,
The Fine Print
Please note that all of the hotel's extra beds are sofa beds. Guests wishing to reserve an extra bed must contact the hotel in advance. Extra beds are not available in Standard Twin rooms.
