Reviews for Hotel Excelsior

Review 1:We requested 3 x twin rooms via booking.com but when we got there they only had double rooms. That wasn't a problem the first night, and they quickly moved us to twin rooms for the remainder of our stay. So all good in the end.

Review 2:The hotel is beautiful, the staff were friendly and helpful, the location was perfect for us and the rooms were great. What more can you ask for?

Review 3:Nothing

Review 4:A classic hotel with huge rooms, friendly staff and a great restaurant. The hotel is just across the street from the bahnhoff and along the walking promenade in the shopping district. Take a 10 minute walk to the Marienplatz to see the glockenspiel cuckoo at the Ratskeller. BTW the staff had a valet take our luggage 2 blocks for us to the Lufthansa airport shuttle when the cab driver refused. What great service!

Review 5:Bar closed throughout our two weeks sojourn, and over Xmas the restaurant was closed. This caused problems for us and obliged us to go to other hotels.

Review 6:Room was very good.

Review 7:The high standards are evident everywhere. Plenty of brilliant 'one percenters' such as offering us bottles of water as we checked out. Genuine high quality hotel, they have 3 others in Munich and the family culture is obvious. 10 out of 10 is a rare score but this gets it from us.

Review 8:We booked 2 junior suites online but when we got to the hotel, one of them was noticeably bigger than the other one. We were told that all the rooms were designed differently. We were a little disappointed because we felt that one room was better than the other. Maybe it should be more clear online especially since we paid the exact same amount for both rooms. Sometimes it gets loud because of people shouting outside the hotel and also the trams passing by, but it wasn't too bad.

Review 9:Hotel was around 10 mins walk from the main shopping area and a 2 min walk from the main munich train station. Staff were amazing and very friendly. Junior suites were very big and comfortable. We loved it.

Review 10:No tea making in the room Beds are uncomfortable Stuffy you cannot adjust the heating

Review 11:Breakfasts are superb great value for money. The hotel is very central , excellent location

Review 12:Only thing if you need a quiet sleep, don't choose the room face to the street with tram. As the window are not sound proof.

Review 13:Very convinence to everywhere and nice friendly staff.

Review 14:Your receptionist is not friendly. Always chatting inside the reception desk. No hello, No good morning.

Review 15:Cleanness, your staff who kept our room clean is very good and polite. We like these kind of attitude to the work.

Review 16:Hard to sleep due to the noise of traffic, S-Bahn trams, loud music and people talking, shouting, laughing and singing loudly all night. Room was uncomfortably over-heated.

Review 17:Convenient location close to railway station, shopping and attractions.

Review 18:I had a single room, and while the room itself was really spacious, the bathroom was extremely compact, with just enough floor space for one person to stand. The sink (which was quite large) was right in front of the toilet seat and the bathtub lies to the right. That meant that every time I bend over to wash my face, the back of my knees touches the toilet seat if I'm not careful. Not a big problem though, it takes little time to get used to, and despite that I will stay at this hotel again.

Review 19:Convenient location just opposite the train station and next to Karlstat department store and a supermarket. The room is very spacious, the service attentive, and the wifi very fast. The lobby lounge, which was around the corner and hidden from street view, was especially nice, it was really cosy and inviting, and you could sit there for ages. Overall, the hotel is filled with old world charm without being dated.

Review 20:Only bad thing was that when you walked outside, there were a lot of drunks, broken bottles, and rubbish to deal with. At the time of our stay there was construction going on, which didn't worry us at all.

Review 21:We had a deluxe room, we loved the bed the doonas and pillows, all down filled. The European oak floors were gorgeous, alpine bathroom also gorgeous! The staff were very helpful at all times.

Review 22:Lovely homely Bavarian hotel, well located near the main hauptbanhof. Good for being a tourist as the hop on hop off bus stops close by. Also easy to reach the Alstadt from here.

Review 23:It would be nice if the exercise facilities were on sight. The facilities were excellent but you had to go down the street to get to them.

Review 24:The staff was very friendly and most helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

Review 25:Staff are well trained, respectful to their job and helpful to clients. Room area perhaps is the only negative but the breakfast is really a great and enjoyable one.

Review 26:The breakfast buffet is a little expensive for two people... Other than that, we really like the hotel as it is convenient to shopping, public transportation, and local restaurants!

Review 27:Great location, excellent staff, and very nice hotel. I would highly recommend this hotel and would stay there again if we ever return to Munich!

Review 28:Hotel is on the edge of a long and extensive pedestrian area - just ideal for seeing highlights of the city, go to the better restaurants and coffee shops, and shopping - by just walking. Helpful front desk staff. Renovated and clean and comfortable. Close to public transportation.

Review 29:I though I came to the police station, because the receptionist asked for our passports first and they copied all. They should to be more discreet with personal data!

Review 30:Very nice hotel, very good food, nice and clean rooms.

Review 31:The staff is very helpful and pleasant. Breakfast buffet was good. My room/mini-suite was lovely ,however it would be even better if it had air-condition. As a tip to the hotel, the remote control for the TV/entertainment system was very complicated, an explanation how to use it would be very helpful.(I luckily , got some help from Die Hausdame )

Review 32:We had to wait 45 minutes after "3 pm Check-in" for our room to be available. Maintenance person tried to enter room (didn't knock, just opened the door) after we did finally get into room. It was unfathomable to pay 20 EUR per person for breakfast after paying 500 EUR for a Suite. Front desk staff was young and inexperienced. It had the feel of a business hotel.

Review 33:Location was perfectly situated to Oktoberfest, Munchen Galleria, Bahnhof and S Bahn. Hotel was beautifully appointed with spacious Suite and comfortable bathroom.

Review 34:Love the Hotel Excelsior. It has a very updated Bavarian atmosphere. The bathroom was gorgeous and modern. The staff couldn't have been nicer - booking reservations for us, calling cabs etc. Great location!!

Review 35:We had a beautiful suite that was quiet and the perfect place to rest and relax following a long flight from the United States. It was in an excellent location for everything we wanted to do, and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

Review 36:Did think it was a bit expensive for what it was but I guess it is in Munich. Soundproofing for rooms was not great - you could easily hear people walking down the corridor and opening doors (& they were not being noisy) plus water running in pipes from bathrooms above and next door - not a huge issue though

Review 37:Lovely hotel very close to the main station and within an easy walk of the old centre of Munich. Room was very clean, comfortable & well furnished with everything we needed. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Lobby area beautifully decorated & other public areas clean and freshly furnished.

Review 38:To our surprise we were put in a small suite which was perfect for the two of us. We had a nice little balcony overlooking a courtyard and a walk in closet. The staff was delightful and information to our travels on the train. We didn't eat breakfast at the place but it looked delicious.

Review 39:Too hot and too noisy in room as there is no air conditioning and the street outside is very noisy with the window open. Noisy drunks frequent the neighbourhood at all hours of the day.

Review 40:Comfortable room and excellent staff and restaurant.

Review 41:When I wanted to expand my stay for one day ( due to my flight booking) the hotel charges me for the night double the price I had before " hotel policy "

Review 42:The room was big and very comfort , I really like the idea of having coffee machine in the room‪.

Review 43:The place is extremely hot and the air conditioners weren't working when we arrived. You left us an entire day with no air conditioning which really disappointed me. Im not thinking of coming back ever again.

Review 44:The apartment is really big with good service and hospitality.

Review 45:Breakfast was a little bit of a let down in our eyes. Pretty expensive but nothing out of the ordinary especially on the hot buffet.

Review 46:Beautiful Alpine Room stylish and very spacious..

Review 47:Some rooms lack air conditioning. Make sure to ask for the Alpine rooms in the summer.

Review 48:Beautifully appointed. Large rooms. Excellent staff. Comfortable lobby. Near everything.

Review 49:Location close to a lot of attractions in Munich. Rooms are of a good size and in general comfortable - nice beds. Noise at night not a problem considering busy location. Friendly staff always willing to help!

Review 50:Shower lacking of modern mixer, need to balance the mix of hot and cold water, getting scald try it. TV channel selection is poor. Only one English channel mixed with other language. So staying back in the room is so uninteresting.

Review 51:The bed is very comfortable. Service is good.

Review 52:The reception was to hard to help us they was disrespectful they was careless no one help us with our luggages we carry our luggages in the end I don't recommend this hotel for my friends because they are careless

Review 53:We booked more than six months In advance and still had a room which did not have air conditioning . This is not acceptable for a hotel with a tariff such as this.

Review 54:Location is good?

Review 55:The room did not have an AC unit. Munich was whether warm during our stay making sleeping a little uncomfortable.

Review 56:Great staff! Anticipated your needs, with some unexpected surprises. Upon my return to the room I noticed a package addressed to me. It was a small gift from the hotel recognizing my birthday. Very nice! Restaurant staff were great and very friendly.

Review 57:Location and No Park at hotel . Car drive to a close by car park to beparked up . We was not made aware of this extra cost prior to booking .the cost of parking car over night was very expensive . Limited onplaces to eat close to hotel . Everything closed when we arrived whichwasn't late .

Review 58:We liked the hotel , the decor , our room wax amazing , we stayed in aspecial suite for a special 60th Birthday . We has a beautiful Bathroomand everything in our room such as a mimi bar , tv , not English , onlyGerman speaking . The staff very friendly and Accomadating . Thebreakfast had a nice range of choice , continental or English . We wouldgive this hotel 7 out of 10 because it was difficult to locate the hotel. There is no Parking at the hotel , You have to an pay extra daily costso check this out before booking as its not cheap , the car is then leftin a car park close to hotel . The hotel is situated in a busy part oftown... In between shops , we didn't like this . The hotel itselfhas a nice boutique feel .

Review 59:stay on 2nd floor and was noisy on a sat nite.

Review 60:arrived at 7am and thankful that room was available for early checkin stone throw from the Bahn exit and walking distance to Karlsplatz and Marienplatz.

Review 61:Our room was facing Bayerstrasse, the room was hot, no A/C and the windows could not be opened due to the terrible noise during the night from the street. Not coming back...

Review 62:Location is the top scorer - being a few paces only from the main train station and right in the pedestrian / shopping zone. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Review 63:We stayed at the Excelsior for a weekend getaway and found it to be an excellent choice. It's extremely close to the central train station and all the heart of the city has to offer in terms of shopping and dining. The room was incredibly quiet, and the both the shower and breakfast were wonderful.

Review 64:When I did my reservation I requested quit side and higher floor but they offer me a side room which was small and very close to the construction work going on in the next door building and the view to the courtyard looking at the huge machines and in lower floors when I ask to change the room they offer me larger room in different category but the furniture was worn-out and not innovated and they apologized for inconvenience. I stayed at this hotels few years ago but I think the hotels standards has been changed Not as used to be high quality.

Review 65:Location only

Review 66:Room service knocks and walks in without waiting or asking. You are up to an embarrassed face when you are in awkward state.

Review 67:Very nice front desk staff. Clean. Private.

Review 68:Excellent room and excellent location. We loved the bed so much we want to buy one. We enjoyed the wine bar each night, very well priced delicious wine from all over the world. Breakfast was excellent.

Review 69:We did not try the breakfast though the room is so beautiful as it is rather expensive at Euro 19/person.

Review 70:We'd booked the Alpine room and love everything about it. The room is new, very well decorated and large enough to accommodate an extra bed for our son per our request (which the staff quickly responded via email.) The bathroom is vey clean and large, well equipped with everything we need, plush bathrobes, slippers, all good quality amenities. Check-in was a breeze, the two elevators are large and quick to come. All the reception staffs were very helpful and friendly, they suggest some good restaurants and offer to help with the reservations without us having to ask. The location in the old town is great, right next to the main train station and on the main walking street so it was easy to go anywhere with the train or even walking. There is a Department store right opposite, an Amorino ice creme shop there. We did not try the restaurant on the rather quiet walking street, it was the Easter weekend and most shops are closed except those in the train station which were very convenient to walk to, just across the street, everything you need in there including supermarkets. The Rathaus and the main square is 2 train stops away, but as they are on the main walking street straight from the hotel, they are very easy to get to, 5 min to the main walking street (easier to cross the underground tunnel, also with lots of shops and cafes down there), 10 -15 min walk to the Rathaus and another 5 to the ViktualienMarkt. Hotel Parking was easy and nearby. The lobby is beautiful with the character of the place. We will surely come back to Hotel Excelsior, Alpine room, the next time we are back in Munich.

Review 71:All negative relates to room only. At first, I booked double room, but no mention on the booking.com webiste that there are newly decorated rooms exist (you have to ask at the reception, but how if you not been told or offered?!). So some guests for the same money enjoy better quality. Second, the room itself reminds by the size single occupancy room. Third, the double bed is not double, only if someone calls 1.5 width double...so has to be clearly stated the fact of mini-double size. To add to this, the Receptionist have seen that we checkin in with a chlid, so clearly could make us aware of the mini-double-bed or at least to offer a recently decored double room. We paid 200 eur per night for quarky small double room with mini diouble bed + 20 each for the breaksfast. And the fourth, this is non-smoking hotel, but it was clearly that the person smoked before us in the room (or sometime ago), yet once complaind - the receptionist kindly apologiesed, offered to spary over the room and to open a window wide at the time we went out for a dinner - but no offer to relocate us to another room. Would I stay once again i the hotel? Breakfast is great, location is good, but unless something will not be done to improve room' environment, I will consider other hotel.

Review 72:Location on a central pedestrian street closeby to central station and 3 minutes to shooping street. Yet there is hardly noise can be heard from outside as no night bars nearby. Breakfast is beautifly presented and remainded of a butique hotel level. Really liked the decor of breaksfast area - traditional bavarian but not overdecorated.

Review 73:Bath/Shower was dangerous to get in and out. The breakfast buffet was mediocre.

Review 74:I liked the size of the room, the price and the location. The staff was helpful.

Review 75:The bed was very, very firm. I felt like I was sleeping on the floor. Too bad, because I would have given the hotel a five star rating.

Review 76:Location, staff and cleanliness. All items in the room mini bar are one euro. Awesome! I also forgot my electrical plug adapter. The hotel had it...what a relief!

Review 77:Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, spoke excellent English. The hotel is a 3 minute walk to the main central train station and also a few mins from the main square's and shopping streets. Our room was spacious, clean and confortable. We had a great overall experience.

Review 78:Very unfriendly staff, the room is so dull and dark, no mirrors in the room, unless u open the cupboard! No place to put ur toilettries in the bathroom, cery unconfy bed! Hated it and left after 2 nights although i was booked for 10!

Review 79:Only thing is the location and not worththe money

Review 80:The location, the style, the bar and restaurant are just top. I definitly will come back again. The staff is the friendliest I ever met - all of them. The food is outstanding, you can trust the recommendations.

Review 81:We spent a wonderful few days at the Hotel Excelsior over Christmas. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, and the room was beautiful and comfortable. We will definitely be coming back!

Review 82:The price of the hotel is rather high considering that it is not a luxury hotel after all. We also had a problem with the rather defective water-cooker, which scalded my finger when I tried to turn if off.

Review 83:The hotel room is tastefully furnished with traditional Bavarian-styled furniture and decor. Its location is great, right next to the main train station and within walking distance to the city centre. Cleanliness and comfort are excellent.

Review 84:THE ROOM WAS VERY COMFORTABLE IN EVERY WAY. THE JUNIOR SUITE WAS LARGE, CLEAN AND WARM.THE OVERALL STANDARD OF THE HOTEL AND THE EXCEPTIONAL SERVICE FROM THE STAFF WAS EXCELLENT.

Review 85:Wish breakfast was a bit more affordable or maybe a more limited breakfast buffet for less to go along with the regular one ... Bed was a bit hard ... It's Europe so that has to be taken into consideration.

Review 86:Staff was pleasant and professional ... the girls at the front desk were so sweet and helpful with directions. Great location! 5 min walk from all the shops and EVERYTHING! Love the grand vaulted ceilings in the room. Nice and comfy. 35-40min train ride from airport for 12 euro - (taxi 80 euro) hotel is not even half a block from the main train station. Love the grand vaulted ceilings in the room. Nice and comfy.

Review 87:Being told on arrival that a prior booking was needed to use the restaurant. We made the room booking for December in September & would have booked Geisel's restaurant at the same time if the hotel had advised us ( by email for example).

Review 88:Junior suite- excellent space, private and quiet and lighter than lower floor rooms. Location- close to S & U Bahn, but pedestrianised & quiet. Very easy access to shops and Christmas markets. Associated wine restaurant- good food & service.

Review 89:I booked a single room, which was almost the same price as the double and still my bed was very small. Got only 2 small towels, no bath towel and the bath drain was a little bit plugged. I stayed only 1 night so didn't bother to complain.

Review 90:Very convenient location - the entrance to the main train station is just few steps away from the hotel. Very nice, festive deco in the lobby.

Review 91:Run down rooms, obsolete decor Junior suite does not even resemble to the pictures published Only one person at the reception desk, handling arriving and departing clients as well as receiving calls, resulting in long waiting times

Review 92:Great location

Review 93:Our booking didn't include breakfast in the price so we had topay an extra 20 Euros per adult for breakfast. Whereas our Germanfriends booked direct with the hotel and got the same rate, but withbreakfast included.

Review 94:We stayed for 4 nights from 25th to 29th October 2014. The hotel put asingle bed and a travel cot in our room for our 2 children. There wasstill plenty of space in the hotel room. Lots of wardrobe space, a sofawith coffee table and a desk. The room and bathroom were very clean andcomfortable. The buffet breakfast was lovely and had plenty of variety. The location of the hotel is perfect. We travelled by train from Munich Airport and went direct to the main central station. The hotel was literally a 30 second walk from one of the exits of this station. It's only a 5 to 10 minute walk to the main shopping street. Love Munich and will definitely go back!

Review 95:We stayed over weekend, it was found there were many colored, ethnic people who was drinking alcohol around the hotel.

Review 96:It's very close to Munich central station & city center just in a few minutes walking distances.

Review 97:The hotel is noisy in the evining because of the bar. It is also noisy durinv the day because it is close to msin street. I did not recommend it to anybody.

Review 98:I have stayed here before on business and obviously new what to expect. The hotel is now being renovated and infortunately the bar in the fhotel wae closed for our stay. There are however alternative facilities in the connecting wine bar next door.

Review 99:The Bavarian style, the comfort and size of the rooms and the service.

Review 100:Price is expensive when compre to nearby hotel. No air condition or fan in my type of room. It would be better if they provide fan in the summer months.

Review 101:The location is very close to the main station and is easy to find. Very close to shoping center and many restaurant. Staff are helpful and polite. Rooms are clean.

Review 102:Nothing that I did not like about this property

Review 103:Walking distance to the main train station. Friendly staff. Very specious room. Love the furniture Highly recommended

Review 104:Room too hot no air con.we were at the front of hotel and the noise ofthe street meant we got no sleep for the three nights. When I went for anap in the afternoon my make up went on the pillow so the charged me 50euro to have it cleaned or washed .I was not happy

Review 105:Staff, decor very pleasing,location.

Review 106:The room was a little bit old fashion, and wear down. The bathroom was from the 70th.

Review 107:Its located 1,3km from Viktualienmarkt. For the price it was okay. The staff was really friendly.

Review 108:Hotel interior & room quality much better than outside appearance. Very comfortable, quiet & with quality fittings. Excellent location a few minutes from Hauptbahnhof. Convenient for city sight seeing and travel connections.

Review 109:Location Deco style Friendly staff Free wifi

Review 110:Beautiful interior, tastfuy decorated rooms with soundproof windows and modern amenities like Nespresso macho. 3 min walk to main train station and only 10min stroll to Marienplatz .

Review 111:The decor was dated and not to my taste at all. The room was a quite odd shape and not well soundproofed. There was no complimentary water on arrival. The lighting could not be switched off from the bedside. The mini bar was not especially well stocked.

Review 112:The hotel was well located for shopping and, importantly for us, the train station. Indeed given the rain when we arrived it could hardly have been in a better location. The cleaning and turndown service was also very good. Check in was efficient.

Review 113:The location was great, central to the train station, Marienplatz, and all sites. The room was comfortable even with an extra bed for our son. The staff was very nice and helpful.

Review 114:The location is a little bit seedy and the hotel entrance is almost invisible from the street, but one you get inside it is a definite 4 star experience.

Review 115:The service, ambiance, room service food, breakfast buffet, hotel restaurant, and room was extremely nice.

Review 116:Bad luck that it was 35 C. and humid. No AC or alternate ventilation, and the street noise on my side of the house with windows open left no comfortable option. It is a seasonal issue, but then in summer beware.

Review 117:Spacious and nicely appointed room with full amenities and friendly staff meeting expectations for a more expensive hotel.

Review 118:very noisy in room we had on Bayerstr on fri and Sat night. Would have asked to be moved if staying longer.

Review 119:excellent location near centre and station and very helpful, friendly staff with useful tips

Review 120:The was no air conditioning in the room. The room size was too small even for single guest.

Review 121:The location is really perfect. Opposite to the main station. A lot kf restaurants cafe shops are around

Review 122:We loved the rooms and the location of the hotel. Staff was helpful and nice as well! Would definitely recommend to a friend.

Review 123:Location is great, cozy& nice rooms

Review 124:Atmosphere ... decor .. feeling at home...location.

Review 125:Room was rather small
