Reviews for HI-Toronto Hostel
Review 1:I couldn't feel it is that much clean. I was in dormitory room and the bunker bed has so much noise.
Review 2:Good location. Cheap price. Nice staff. Fast wifi.
Review 3:Had some trouble with the heater on the last night and mentioned it at checkout so hopefully it got fixed.
Review 4:Good location and all the services I expect in a hostel. Glad I stayed there and would go back.
Review 5:Actually there was not many things that I didn't like. Maybe the bar downstairs could be better but still, very nice hostel.
Review 6:I stayed in 4 room dorm room. It was at the top of the building. 9th floor but still was very warm. I thought it would be very cold but it wasn't. I had bathroom inside the room which was very nice. We had electronic door keys and noone who is not staying in the hostel cooldn't get to the lounge. It was nice. Hostel has a bar downstairs where we can eat breakfast and hang out. Staff was very fun chatting wıth and helpful.
Review 7:I thought the dorms were a bit small but I guess it's okay if you're only there to sleep !
Review 8:The staff is amazing : always smiling and helpful ! The location is perfect . I didn't have to take the subway. I walked everywhere I wanted to go. Plus the area seems safe , if you wanna come back late at night, make sure to come by the south ( Front or King street). If you come by Queen street (north) it's a little bit less safe at night.
Review 9:Extremely slow kitchen service in the bar downstairs, no communal kitchen area that you can actually cook in (only fridge and microwave)
Review 10:Location, cleanliness
Review 11:It's a bit tricky to get to know people if you're traveling alone because most of them have been there for so long that they're not really interested in meeting anyone new..
Review 12:LOVED the breakfast. the bar is cool. Comfy beds. location is right in the city.
Review 13:It took forever to order a meal at the bar and it got mixed up. The people at reception wasn't very friendly. The place is a bit far from the union train station so if you are carrying heavy bags, you might have to walk quite a bit.
Review 14:The breakfast was great. There's an elevator.
Review 15:room should be cleaned better they never changed linen and towels in nine days
Review 16:complimentary breakfast close to the subway free coffee and tea all day
Review 17:The price shown on this website is for members only. Non-members need to pay an additional $20 per night. This information is available under the information box, but I didn't notice earlier.
Review 18:The private room is clean and comfy.
Review 19:The lockers were too small, very different from those shown on pictures. I was barely able to keep my camera and electronic stuff in there. The room was too narrow! But It worked well at the end. The Cavern Bar isn't good. They only have 4 items(appetizers) and 6 main dishes (all of them burgers) on their menu. Place is too small too! I waited too long at front desk to order my meal because there was no one there to help me there. The front desk lady wasn't kind.
Review 20:Location was perfect! Nice environment! Nice staff!
Review 21:My mattress sunk in the middle, I asked the other people sharing my room and theirs were the same.
Review 22:Really good location, friendly and helpful staff. It's good that there is a bathroom both in room and communal as I was uo early and didn't want to wake people up.
Review 23:The location is fantastic Younge Street and Union Station is within walking distance (10-15 min). The staff was very friendly in everything (Thanks again Rachel)! Breakfast was also good (5 meal combos to pick from). Every day another program and the Bar in the basement has great beer sortiment. Steam Whistle was my fav! Would stay here anytime again! Positive ++++++
Review 24:- although the mattresses are really comfortable, the bunk beds can get quite loud when somebody turns around at night - the lockers could be a little more spacious
Review 25:- breakfast is really good and included - there are a lot of activities organized by the hostel - the location is a five star one right in downtown Toronto - the hostel is very well equipped - the staff is really nice and helpful
Review 26:The kichent scredrule is still 9 . Will be nice if can be open little more
Review 27:Everything is good the service, very good costumer service. Travis and sean always are there to help you about the city and the hostel.
Review 28:Did not have curtains in the windows There was too much noise coming from the basement (there was a band playing) and I could badly sleep. I had a bad surprise when |I had to pay for than the rates I have booked
Review 29:The actual rooms are not as nice as the rest of the hostel. Very cramped.
Review 30:Amazing staff. We lost a wallet and they offered to mail it back for us. The facilities downstairs are really nice. Awesome location.
Review 31:Cold in the room. Air conditionair on during the first night (room of 10 people). Guess i was not lucky. Second night in a room of 4 people a bit small but good. Lack of plug in this room.
Review 32:Good situation, nice service and comfortable.
Review 33:-at the check in I found out that I will be charged 5$ more because I do not own some kind of a traveller's card - I did not notice any information about it before, but maybe it's my fault
Review 34:-it was cheap and quite close to the train station
Review 35:It was unclear what the price was going to be Lockers were a bit small Music playing late at night downstairs made it hard to sleep WIFI was spotty in the room
Review 36:Staff were nice and helpful Bed was reasonably comfortable No bedbugs! Dorm mates were friendly Central location near where I wanted to go
Review 37:I guess that for Toronto standard the prices are good, still you have to pay 41 dollar for a 4 people dorm room
Review 38:Good position, good bed, breakfast included
Review 39:There are loud live bands playing some night which can be heard from the third floor possibly higher
Review 40:Beds are super comfy and plenty bathrooms all clean! Can't get a better location
Review 41:Staff friendly and helpful. It was great to be able to eat dinner and breakfast at the hostel! Made my stay very easy. By eating at the hostel I ended up meeting some folks and playing some games. It was an unexpected, but very pleasant experience.
Review 42:Some of the people I has bunking with were insanely loud, but that is no problem of the establishment.
Review 43:I was able to check in early and get some laundry services and refuge from the rain outside. When I showed up I was soaked to the vine and freezing. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Review 44:The website is kind of misleading when it says have a piece of photo ID the first thing I don't think of when traveling in my own country is bringing my passport. You should have list of excepted IDs including passport. We were almost turned away because we didn't bring ours. Please consider changing or adding a list.
Review 45:The beds were surprisingly comfortable and the breakfast was a pleasant surprise.
Review 46:Just a little note- you do need to buy a membership card to be able to get the discounts listed on booking.com.
Review 47:Great location, easy to get to everywhere you need!
Review 48:Friendly staff and access to the facilities even after I had checked out. Really good value for money! I will definitely stay here when I am in Toronto
Review 49:This hostel use card key but!!! it has lots of problems. I couldn't open the door...so I had to change or reset my key at least once a day.
Review 50:I got some choice of breakfast. It was very delicious and they are very kind. they usually check the washroom and keep clean.
Review 51:the matress was way too soft room for 4 people really small (moving around each other turned to an adventure)
Review 52:close to Downtown Breakfast was really delicious great kitchen
Review 53:the bed is quite old and not really good quality. But I didn't expect a luxuty cozy bed like five star hotel. And the bathrool is shared with Male and Female.
Review 54:The location was perfect. close to the air center toronto and some restaurant nearby the hostel. safe and easy to find.
Review 55:They show member price on the web site and I'm not a member so I had to pay $5 extra each day. I could have chosen the other hostel. Breakfast is very small serve even though I lined up for 30minuites on the stairs. A lot of people gave up breakfast. Breakfast was supposed to start 7:30 but they started at 8:00.
Review 56:Hotel is clean and security is great.
Review 57:I did not like the fact that the cleaning staff just walked into the room to do some cleaning without even knocking, and there was a little attitude when I asked for a clean towel. Was there a kitchen on site for guests to use?
Review 58:I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the hostel. everyone was extremely friendly and it was great dealing with the front desk for local info and where to go locals.
Review 59:not really but I wanted talk with other person they have few public space
Review 60:There are so many backpackers. Then it's really good staff. So it was comfortable for staying there
Review 61:I don't like Toronto's alcohol regulated policy of measuring such little alcohol in a cocktail. A Long Island iced tea is designed so that you are feeling great after one drink. Unfortunately in this city the 3 shots of alcohol is less than 1 percent of the total drink, which is 99 percent Coke. But this isn't the hostel's fault.
Review 62:This HI hostel was the absolutely best I've been in the world. As a solo traveller, it was very easy to make new friends by participating in the many activities they plan for guests. The bar downstairs in the basement also offers solo guests the opportunity to meet other guests. The staff were genuinely friendly and outgoing, which helped with joining tours and participating in hostel activities. I made many new friends there! I was hesitate in paying for the $55 Niagara Falls tour, but I'm very happy I did! You get to see so much more than if you went alone by bus or rental car! Though I think the tour driver talked a bit too much, he was extremely informative and I learned a lot from his tour--and I love the passion and love he exuded about his country. Overall, I would highly recommend this hostel to solo travelers, shy travellers who want to make a friend or two, and outgoing couples/groups. The only drawback regarding the area that I would have is that McD's is the only late-night restaurant open within a 5 minute walk if you feel like having a midnight snack.
Review 63:bed is too soft, can not support the back. Room rate show in booking.com is tax included, but when we check in, they said the room rate exclude tax, we need to pay 15% more.
Review 64:Location
Review 65:The major issue was that there were not enough power points to charge everyone's devices. The other issues were mostly irrating, badly spring beds, wash basin in the room, the staff were helpful but couldn't help with my general questions about Toronto.
Review 66:I liked that there was a shower in the room, the breakfast was simple but ok
Review 67:The lockers in my room were not big, so I could not lock every valuable pertain. but it was not a big deal The breakfast system should be more organized. In the last day they forgot to bring my breakfast and people that arrived after me was receiving their breakfast earlier. I received my breakfast only after asking two times for it.
Review 68:The staff is awesome - very helpful The room was very comfortable The breakfast is also super good The localization is perfect
Review 69:I made the mistake of no reading well the specifications of the hostal.. I paid and when I explained to the guy what happen, he was so cool and so polite!! Man, this people is so nice!!
Review 70:The window was right in front of the road, so the cars could be heard during the night.
Review 71:The staff here were super nice and helpful. The breakfast was included in the price and was awesome with a good variety of choices.
Review 72:The entire place, at the exception of the reception area, was stuffy. There was no air flowing at all and made the entire experience unpleasant. The cleaning was done, but not well and there was always water on the floor. I won't go there again.
Review 73:Good location
Review 74:Great location, very nice staff and the best thing about it was the daily activities and the downstairs bar. It's very easy to meet other travelers there. Would definitely recommend this place!
Review 75:The breakfast was not very good. There were signs up during our stay that hot breakfast was not available, so it would have been nice to see what the breakfast really is!
Review 76:Great location, friendly staff and the facilities for a private room in a hostel were superb.
Review 77:If there are any sets of rules to go over with those renting. Someone had their laptop on the entire night watching movies, I couldn't sleep from the light of the screen and the sound. Can there be a no sound and lights out curfew?
Review 78:Amazing and accommodating staff. Very welcoming.
Review 79:I was expecting buffet like in other HI hostels which I didn't. And breakfast choice was limited.
Review 80:The location was one of the features I liked most. Plus the personnel was always ready to help.
Review 81:I hated the size of the rooms, they are long corridor like rooms with very little space.
Review 82:I loved the location and the staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and very professional.
Review 83:Them were not able to offer a hot breakfast as advertised. No reason given.
Review 84:Terrific location in the old town of Toronto. Subway and trolleys very close. Can book discounted tours to Niagara Falls and around Toronto.
Review 85:I find hostels never as clean as they should be, no exception here. Just not a level of cleanliness to make you feel comfortable. The ratio of showers and toilets to amount of rooms/people they had to accommodate seemed very low. Wifi could be more reliable.
Review 86:Great location, friendly staff. The breakfast was nothing special but better than some I've had.
Review 87:very small ensuite shower.. sometimes you can't even inside; staff did not give me discounts unless in Hi-Vancouver Central even I told them explicitly
Review 88:location
Review 89:The first night I couldn't come because of bad schedule with my busthey charged me directly. Then when I arrived the guy at the receptiondidn't want to serve me and asked someone else to do it . Whether hedidn't want to bother understand my English, or he was racistbecause I was black. I saw comments about their behaviour towards blackpeople I know now it is true. I am not going back there. I suggest youNeill wycick the hostel for people in summer they are the best. Oneindividual room for the price of hi toronto's dorms of 6.
Review 90:The location is good. In downtown not so far from the main attraction.
Review 91:The worst check in time, 03 00 pm..so late Breakfast was not buffee, but ordered from menu.. The price per night is 5$ higher than you book on booking.com, or you have to buy membership for 28$ for year, then you get it for the price you originaly found on booking.com
Review 92:The position..downtown Personell was very helpfull and friendly Good prices for bike rents(if you are member) Bathrooms were ok Good programm and actions organised by hostel
Review 93:The curtains in the bathroom need to be plastic so the water doesn't get on the floor. Fix the Air Conditioning in the rooms as well those small fans were not doing much.
Review 94:Enjoyed the openess of the staff. The cleanliness of the place and ofcourse "The Cave."
Review 95:it's just a little short back, you know, then travel outside, it's often for people to feel tired.and we always get up until 10 o'clock am.or maybe later.it would be better that prolong the breakfast time.
Review 96:the staff are very responsible for us .they took good care of our luggage.and they are very enthusiastic.maybe next time when I travel to this city this hotel would be my best choice.
Review 97:did not meet my expectation to accommodate my request for a bottom bed that I made almost two weeks ago. I had surgery so climbing up to the top bed was very uncomfortable.
Review 98:ease to check in, price, location, security, breakfast
Review 99:Amazing Breakfast!!! One of the best, not only coffee and bread, really cooking! The room and bed is quiet comfort, and great location just in downtown and nearby a lot of attraction! Great staff, fast internet, perfect place in Toronto!
Review 100:Room quite small and small lockers, but eveything else was perfect.
Review 101:Ensuite bathroom to the 4-bed dorm, excellent location, very safe, delicious cooked breakfast (better than most good hotels).
Review 102:The shower is very small. It is hard to clean when you keep bumping your elbows! There could be an improvement with the breakfast system. I waited almost an hour 1 morning. I hope they come up with a solution.
Review 103:The staff were great! Friendly, helpful and super accommodating! Location is perfect. The place overall was a good choice. I enjoyed my stay.
Review 104:Very very noisy, you can hear music from the bar after midnigh. The bedroom are very unfriendly. Tha washroom are just the worst, very small, not clean. Very expensive.
Review 105:The breakfast is very good. Good internet connexion. Good localisation.
Review 106:the room so small and dirty. the washroom also. they even did not clean the room everyday.
Review 107:the staff are very nice and helpful and breakfast really delicious.
Review 108:Rooms are super small. Beds are utterly uncomfortable. I had to check out before the end of my trip and I stayed elsewhere. Overpriced and not clean.
Review 109:Location was OK.
Review 110:I liked that my room was always a quiet place i could go to relax but i wanted to meet more people. The people in my room weren't really interested in talking. Maybe have more activities or events to help people socialize that doesn't involve alcohol (this was the biggest issue for me). Bed sunk in the middle so it was hard to get in and out, i had sore legs for most of my stay so it was difficult for me to get to the top bunk. could hear the music from the cavern at night when trying to sleep, even with ear plugs (i was on second floor). The sun was bright and shone into the room waking me up early (just need to fix the curtain a bit), i could hear people out from through the window. the bathroom in the room had lots of black mold (maybe put a fan in), the whole room was stuffy (wanted a window that could open). some of the kitchen staff could be a little nicer.
Review 111:Loved the location, free breakfast, 50% off first meal, wifi, helpful, friendly and knowledgable staff.
Review 112:Washing machines always full and the mattress dipped in the middle.
Review 113:The location of the hostel was perfect, I met a lot of amazing people from all over the world and the breakfast was pretty great. I also really liked the patio area.
Review 114:Nothing.
Review 115:The friendliness and overall excellence from all staff members, and they great interaction from other fellow traveller's was fantastic. Definitely coming back.
Review 116:Nothing remarkable.A good hostel in my opinion.
Review 117:The breakfast and the fact that there were lockers in the rooms. Plus, the service was great and the facilities clean. In the city center
Review 118:Breakfast was sometimes delayed (just 10min - but it makes a difference when you want to grab some food before catching a bus)
Review 119:Breakfast, location, very friendly staff
Review 120:This hostel is dishonest about their pricing. The actual price is hidden behind fine print, so make sure you read the extra information. The hostel is very aware that people never read it, but won't change the listed price to reflect reality.
Review 121:Good location.
Review 122:The lockers were quite small and you need your own padlock for it. It is a good idea to bring earplugs or earphones :-) Some of the guests were snorkeling.
Review 123:Amazing people from all over the world! The Cavern is a great pub with live music every evening. Receptionists are happy to give you advice where to go. The hostel card provides a lot of discounts, e.g. Bike rental, some tours like Niagara Falls day tour. Had a great time there!
Review 124:Except for the good location, we pretty much disliked everything about this hotel. When we first got in, the reception staff was nice and welcoming and we felt this youth spirit in the air with so many young people sitting around the reception area, reading or chatting, and the whole fresh setup of the place, so we thought we made the right choice but that was it! After that, you'd barely see a single staff member smile back at you or say hello (note that we were compelled to pay an extra charge of around $28 to buy the Hi-Hostels membership card or else we would've been required to pay a surcharge of $20 per night- this is mentioned on the booking page so make sure you read it). The room was small and extremely noisy, we couldn't find out where the noise is coming from but we guess it was from neighboring air conditioners since there was a section below the window that isn't sound proof. The bed was small and not that comfortable, the room wasn't cleaned daily, and the towels were changed once during our 4 nights stay. Not to mention that we had to pay a deposit of $200 each for bike rental even though we're guests at the hotel. The breakfast was poor.
Review 125:The Hotel is in a good location, we didn't use public transportation at all, everything is reachable by foot (if you like to walk of course!)
Review 126:The shower wasn't quite clean enough and the open sink area makes it noisy
Review 127:Amazing atmosphere, staff and activities. The bar is a great place to meet people.
Review 128:Room space is very narrow hard to experience ever. A little noisy at night by the concert and a liqiud bar running in the basement. Annoying that you should swipe card everywhere even to take an elevator...
Review 129:Close from the Union Station (Toronto) with about 10minutes walk. Close with downtown attractions and easy to watch a live concert held in the basement bar. Very convenient that the restroom is located in the room which is usually very uncommon in other hostels.
Review 130:Same bathroom: old, damp, dirty...need to be renovated and cleaned more than once a day
Review 131:En suite bathroom in the female dorm is perfect while getting ready.
Review 132:Staff were friendly. I loved shampoo and soaps in shower. There is plenty of space to chill out and socialise. I loved the free tour to the Art Gallery and the city, and the guide - she was perfect!
Review 133:nothing in particular perhaps the bed might have been a little more confortable
Review 134:everything it was outstanding thepersonnel was very charming and helpful
Review 135:The only thing I didn't like was that my room card never really worked, I got a new card and it worked like once. Luckily my boyfriend's card worked fine and we just used his.
Review 136:I really liked that there was a cozy little bar underneath the hostel where they allow all the guests to listen to free local music!! The Cavern was awesome, the first nights meal is half off and it is a nice little place to hangout. The beds were pretty comfy. Each room has it's own bathroom/shower (4-dormitory room) and an air-conditioning unit. The people at the front desk are always there and super helpful and nice!
Review 137:The only thing I didn´t like was breakfast. They try to provide something more, so you can order from several menus and the cook will bring it for you. But if you are in hurry that´s not the best idea - it takes time. Also it was not enough for me I am used to have a big breakfast to start my exploring day...
Review 138:This was so far the best hostel I visited. They have showers and toilets in the rooms. WiFi works in the whole place, not only in lobby. They provide you with soap, shampoo and conditioner and they also have a hairdryer in the rooms.
Review 139:It was a bit cold in the chill out room! Internet reception in the room was a bit hit and miss
Review 140:Good location Excellent free breakfast from menu Nice & helpful staff That home away from home feel
Review 141:The music from downstairs was a bit loud at times.
Review 142:The breakfast was awesome! The location was outstanding. The cute guy at the front desk was really nice and helpful.
