Reviews for Masaya Santa Marta

Review 1:Not much. Worst that may be said is the travel agency attached to the hostel messed up one of our bookings, but in all fairness this may not have been their fault.

Review 2:Outstanding staff, great location and excellent facilities. Hostel was very well laid out with common areas located on the 3rd floor/rooftop, which do not interfere with sleeping areas on the first and second floor.

Review 3:The staff were really unhelpful and uninterested , almost rude. Our first room was REALLY musty and smelly, although it was a nice room. In that climate they should leave the fan or aircon on a bit. (our second room was much better). It is a nice hostel but quite expensive, as there are others in the same street for much less. Dirty things in kitchen cupboards.

Review 4:Nice building, well renovated with some pools and lovely areas to rest and relax. Breakfast was ok. There is a kitchen to use but pots and cups etc were not at all clean. The light only came on in the kitchen at 6 although it gets dark at around 5:30.

Review 5:Another staff member clearly didn't want to speak anything but Spanish and made me feel like I was disturbing her siesta.

Review 6:The rooftop eating area and bar are a nice break from the street noise below. The place is well-laid out and stylish. The bag-storage service is very useful. The staff member at my check-in spoke good English and was very courteous and helpful. Aventure Colombia has an office in the building - very convenient for arranging tours.

Review 7:Laundry was very expensive, and staff were not very warm.

Review 8:Great overall atmosphere, plenty of lounge areas in shade and in sun, hammock beds, nice pools. I loved the location and that they had a tour agent on site. Loved the pod beds with personal outlet and light.

Review 9:Just an awesome place!!! Clever and cool design, super nice common areas, decent breakfast, helpful staff (especially Maria). would totally recommend it anytime!

Review 10:Staff at front desk were so rude. We needed matches for the kitchen stove (the kitchen was dirty also), and was told it was our own expense and we had to go buy a lighter. Plus we wanted to go to the movies, and when we asked for help the girl at the desk was so unhelpful it was ridiculous. I had to drag the information from her, she was so unforthcoming. Fan in bed didn't work, and windows were open so mosquitos came in. Bathroom door was broken, as was the toilet paper dispenser.

Review 11:Great location. Beautiful building. Really nice pool and rooftop setup.

Review 12:The private room was like a prison cell. Beds rock hard and for the price, not worth it at all. Breakfast needs to be much more efficient. To be told 'i have no breakfast left' is not acceptable.

Review 13:Nice looking place. Decent rooftop.

Review 14:Rooms smell. Stains on walls. Damaged air conditioner. Staff couldnt make anything about it; I dont know why they dont check their ACs before offering a room. In santa marta weather is very hot and sleeping without AC is very uncomfortable. Had to ask for my money and leave the hotel. Had to walk all santa marta center to find a proper hotel at 7pm when I went for a friends marriage; I totally missed it because of this problem.

Review 15:The place is nice. Excellent location.

Review 16:No AC in the 12 bed dorm room.

Review 17:Amazing view from the rooftop pool, great facilities, nice design- feels much more like a hotel than a hostel! The dorm is pretty big, but the beds have curtains which helps.

Review 18:Tour desk was closed during our stay and our deluxe room was smaller than the others with no where to put our bags also no blind on the window so our room was very bright at night. Just a few little issues but would stay here again.

Review 19:Really clean, big beds, reasonable breakfast. Nice pools.

Review 20:Nice breakfast but could be better if service was a little less chaotic - would suggest having cereal , coffee and juice in a self service and take egg orders on arrival so people are served first come first served basis.

Review 21:The pools, free use of computers, helpful staff, happy hour cocktails and the location.

Review 22:The top pool was brown. The location is right in city center. Bit too busy for us but thats our personal feel.

Review 23:The pools were great aswell as the haammocks.

Review 24:The room for 3 people is a bit strange: there is a very high ladder to get to the third bed, it's not very handy and it can be a bit scary !

Review 25:Good hotel, well located and with good services (internet, wifi, bar)

Review 26:The ambience of this place is amazing, the structure of the building the rooms and the roof top pool are stunning, other than that their stuff is very friendly and helpful, specially David and Theo. We miss you guys!

Review 27:Good optional breakfast, nice common rooms, kitchen at the roof , billiard tables and more. Bed has some option to separate from room. Lockers. Good aircondition. The first hostel I give 10 out of 10 points, because they deserve!

Review 28:The breakfast was extra and didn't look very appetising.

Review 29:I liked the curtains around the bunk beds, very clean everywhere, quiet at night and the pool/view on the roof. A bit pricier than others close by but it's worth it!

Review 30:Great rooftop eating area and very small bathing pool (pictures make pool look way bigger than they really are). Private rooms with comfortable beds and air-conditioning.

Review 31:not reliable on the activites offered. The salsa class scheduled on Tuesday night at 8pm, was rescheduled for 9pm. And finally happened on Wednesday at 6pm. Funilly enough, we've ended up missing it :-)

Review 32:The location, kindness of the staff. Always there to help you and make sure your stay is pleasant. The fact that the travel agency, with great suggestions of activities is so close. Comfort, the two pools. The other hosts. A great way to meet up with other backpackers in a nice, relax and quiet place. The happy hour with delicious mojitos to drink on the great and cool terrasse.

Review 33:The rooms were very small and cramped - nowhere to put your bag and the lockers weren't easily accessible. I have stayed in much better hostels for the same price

Review 34:The swimming pool

Review 35:nothing

Review 36:Great place and the private rooms rival cheaper hotels in the area. Great for a younger atmosphere and the rooftop is really nice to sit and chat at night. They also have discounts for neighboring restaurants. They are able to help you set up tours/transport as well to other areas.

Review 37:not all the staff was kind. it took me 10 minutes conversation to get information on where to find a laundry outside the hostel...(language was not a barrier). some of them were really nice.

Review 38:I loved the architecture of the place and the top roof terrace, i loved the bedrooms for the bed with curtain so you have your own privacy and also the shared bathroom was inside the room. very uncommon and practical detail!

Review 39:I wish breakfast was included in the price so everyone would meet together in the morning. It would create more of a sense of community

Review 40:Excellent air conditioning and rooftop pool.

Review 41:The super room that was reserved was not prepared and the air condition unit did not work. Since this was Friday, they could not get someone to fix it until Monday. That is unacceptable. We had to move to a room #6 with air condition that was almost half the size of the reserved room and had a bad smell of sewer. Breakfast was ok but the lady serving breakfast seemed to be overwhelmed every time there were more than 4 people for breakfast and we had to wait for a long time before it was served. The staff in the reception changed daily - whatever we discussed and agreed upon was not honored by the attendant on the following day.

Review 42:The arrangement of the rooms in the yard and the roof top sitting place

Review 43:Unfriendly staff that were unwilling to help with problems. Very ill equipped and dirty kitchen. Fan above my bed was broken and there were too many beds for the size of the room.

Review 44:The location was good and the roof terrace was pretty.

Review 45:Everything was arranged properly. The room was clean and easily accessible. The personnel spoke both Spanish and English and was very helpful. Also the breakfast was nice.

Review 46:The wifi was extremely poor. Additionally work was about to start which was very noisy when we returned to collect our bags.

Review 47:The building interior is well thought out with 2 pools should you require and full use of the roof terrace with breakfast and recreation at the top.

Review 48:Fee due in advance Hostel conditions not comparable to hotel Air conditioner controlled by a remote control rather than a thermostat WiFi often unusable

Review 49:Modest prices Convenient location Helpful clerks that can speak English

Review 52:permanently open doors to the big dorms despite recent security issues, broken lockers and bathroom doors (however, they started some upgrade works when I was there so they are working on improving stuff)

Review 53:roof top, two pools, decent wifi, friendly and helpful staff (most of them anyway)

Review 54:Hot during the day - I think air conditioning only turns on at night in the rooms (after 10 maybe), the rest of the time only a fan is available. Not a problem if you're not there during the day, but I was sick so it was a bit miserable. As with any hostel, it's only as quiet the noisiest person in your room (who came in drunk at 2am and fell off the bunk bed a few times), so at times a bit noisy. Additionally there was no screen/curtain between my bed and the outside lobby so anyone could see in or out, but this seemed to only be an issue with my particular bunk.

Review 55:Beds were comfortable & the privacy curtain was great. In general a very cool hostel, especially if you're out and about all day and only really sleep here at night, but probably best experienced if you're traveling with a group/friend(s). Privacy/security is good - key card access to rooms; location is great. Really helpful & friendly staff.

Review 56:It is downtown Santa Marta so the streets are busy. The shower in our room had no pressure ... So it was a very sloooooow shower!:)

Review 57:Kids loved playing in the 2 pools. Very nicely designed. Rooftop relaxing. Service is very helpful. Lots of foreigners staying at the hotel. Had a safe; AC worked :); TV In the room.

Review 58:Kitchen could be slightly better equipped.

Review 59:Everything. Clean, practical, great showers, good beds, lockable drawers in dorms, beautiful facilities, well thought out design. Cannot recommend this hostel highly enough. Felt like hotel facilities (and a good hotel at that!) with the convenience and atmosphere of a hostel.

Review 60:Private rooms quite expensive by Colombian standards.

Review 61:Great location Pools Rooftop bar (with live music) Friendly crowd of travellers Friendly staff

Review 62:Not a great location, it was close to the beach, but not any beach you'd like to go to, they told us the way and it turned out to be the port; to go to the "nice" beaches like Taganga or Rodadero you had to take a taxi ride of about 20 minutes. The best ones are in Tayrona Park though, so if you are into camping and mainly there for the beach I would just recommend staying inside Tayrona.

Review 63:The hostel was very nice, the rooftop pool was the best thing to go to after a long day at the beach and close enough to the bar to get your drinks. It didn't have as much of a party vibe as other hostels did, but they did offer some chill music and entertainment, and it was at a walking distance from La Brisa Loca, another hostel with more of a party vibe you could enter with no problems. The rooms were fine and each bed had a curtain for privacy. There was a bathroom in the room but you could also use common bathrooms outside, which was pretty convenient. Wifi was good (not just in the common areas but also inside the rooms) and overall it was a good experience!

Review 64:We were so happy to have found Masaya and only wish we had stayed at the Masaya in Bogota as well- Fantastic facilities, beautiful pool, super helpful, friendly staff, and great travel agency (Aventure Colombia) we booked several trips with- we couldn't have been happier with Masaya and highly recommend them! Very professional and really felt like the staff cared about each one of us. Two of us became sick from another restaurant in Santa Marta and every day the staff asked how we were doing- great cable stations as well when we needed to stay inside and get better/

Review 65:Every evening very loud music which would be even understandable till 10pm but it was sometimes till 11-12pm (I stayed there 4 nights), if you come back from the whole day trip tired - it is really frustrating. And then you read at the reception that they ask to be quiet after 10pm - almost like a joke! WiFi is good, NOT great, at the reception only - in the room (ground floor, a room close to the reception) or in the breakfast area really bad and always disturbed by the Masaya hostel ads or questionnaire. Staff at the reception is strange, kind of nice but very bored, very slow.. maybe because of no air conditioning?! Breakfast included in the room rate is really basic, I would appreciate some arepas and Colombian specialities etc. For all of this - just the way too expensive.

Review 66:Big room, nicely designed interior, clean. English speaking staff at the reception (only Spanish speaking in the breakfast area). Great base for organised trips to Minca, Tayrona National Park or diving in Taganga if you prefer to stay in a bigger city.

Review 67:the private rooms are very expensive, might as well book a dorm and spend most your time on the roof!!

Review 68:the rooftop with bar and pool were a great way to spend the day relaxing after the tough Lost City trek.

Tudo é bonito (especialmente as areas comuns). A localizacao tambem é muito boa, perto dos ônibus para Taganga e Tayrona!

Review 71:The price of the rooms is expensive, although you're paying for the other amenities in the hostel. It could include breakfast for the price. The wifi was generally good but would drop out sometimes in the evening when everyone was using it.

Review 72:The staff are great and should be paid more! The terrace is brilliant, as is the cinema room. The rooms to sleep are ok, but the six bed dorm is tiny - go for the four bed if you want some space.

Review 73:The wifi didn't work reliably in our first-floor room, though it worked well outside our door by the pool.

Review 74:We traveled with our 7-year-old daughter and she loved the loft bed in our room. She got to sleep 10 feet in the air. The two small pools were clean and never crowded. The staff was friendly and helpful. They let us keep our bags at the hotel when we went for an overnight trip to Parque Tayrona and let us shower when we returned.

Review 75:We found two dead cockroaches; the don't lend towells to take out of the hotel. Breakfast is poor and not a lot of options.

Review 76:Well located, lots of activities, helpful staff, amazing terrace. The price is right for the services they offer.

Review 77:Amazing hostel in the city center, with a lot of restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets close by. Short walk from the beach and easy access by public transportation to the surrounding villages and Tayrona NP. The rooms were great, very clean and modern, but the rooftop with bar, swimming pool, kitchen and lounge area really exceeded expectations. Definitely recommended!

Review 78:Wifi wasn't too good but they were working through it this week so I think future guests can expect it to be better. The kitchen isn't as well-equipped as it good be, especially compared to the rest of the facilities.

Review 79:Firstly, upon arriving at Masaya you will be pleasantly surprised. It is architecturally gorgeous and the facilities are very clean and impressive. It is in an amazing location, the staff are wonderful (special shout-out to David at the bar who always makes everyone feel welcome!), the rooms are cleaned daily and there are lots of different spaces across the three (almost 4) levels to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. You can catch a great view of the beach sunset from the rooftop. Amazing.

Review 80:+pools were quite small - more dip than anything +location is ok but not near restaurants or beach

Review 81:+awesome small pools (2x) +nice breakfast +awesome theatre room +daily events +great staff +great roof terrace

Review 82:The bed was one of the most uncomfortable beds I've ever slept in Normal price for the room is way above everywhere else in the city - probably due to all of the rave reviews on here!!!

Review 83:Location was close to Cathedral and waterfront Allowed to leave luggage whilst on lost city trek Quiet, especially after 10pm The price we paid (half their normal) was a fair price for the room

Review 84:Sporadic wifi, the bar ran out of water to purchase, a problem at 10:00 on a Sundat night. Staff member Monika was extremely helpful and accommodating. She deserves a gold star.

Review 85:Nicely designed, good breakfast (extra cost), clean, great, helpful staff.

Review 86:rooms are too hot and AC turns on at 10pm, the place where hostel is is not nice, I did not like it

Review 87:verz nice common space, mostly nice and helpful staff, good breakfast

Review 88:my second private room had a wonderful a/c that was so amazing after being out in a humid santa marta all day. i didn't indulge in the facility pools but they looked quite relaxing. the breakfast on the roof (included for the private rooms, nominal otherwise i think) was consistent and the atmosphere was relaxing. the staff was very friendly and helpful, even during peak hours. great stay!

Review 89:Nothing negative except the shower in my dorm was just a trickle which didn't cause me a problem at all.

Review 90:Everything g you could want, even your own 'private' bed in a dorm with its own light etc. Pool and social/bar areas good with plenty of different options. Everything always clean. Live music for an hour or so in the bar quite often. Low key in that it isn't a party hostel but lots going on. Staff were out of their way helpful in sorting out a flight problem for me. All excellent.

Review 91:Wasn't close to any beaches where you'd want to swim.

Review 92:Beautiful building that had 2 pools and a rooftop deck with the views around Santa Marta that were luxurious. The staff were extremely friendly and the live music was fantastic. Also it was close to the marketplace and several restaurants in town. We kept talking about how we didn't want to leave.

Review 93:The poolside furniture is all broken and in need of replacement, staff friendly, other travelers a bit standoffish, book exchange virtually non-existent, travel desk not very helpful for solo travelers -- why don't they have a public sign up sheet so those without a travel companion can see if others are interested in the same things as minimum 2 people needed for most outings.

Review 94:Good location, 2 swimming pools, good bar service, decent breakfast included if you stay in a private room, good security, travel desk available

Review 95:I stayed in three different rooms. The twin room was good, the 4 bed dorm was cramped with a poor shower and blocked sink and the 12 bed dorm had two showers and a toilet to which the lock was broken. The sinks and showers were blocked throughout the hostel.

Review 96:Set in a beautiful building but it was expensive to stay here considering the facilities were in need of repair. The roof top terrace is nice. The beds are comfortable and having curtains around each bed gives you privacy. The 12 bed dorm is better than the 4 bed dorm in terms of space. Breakfast was decent.

Review 97:Naughty and annoying reception lady. In several cases I had to contact the boss to solve a problem. I have to say, that the boss was really friendly and helpful. But the reception lady was unable to commit herself to a customer oriented behaviour.

Review 98:probably it's a bit quiet / relaxed for some travellers. but like i said if you're looking for a party, you can just go down the road to brisa loca bar. the masaya is far far nicer during the day

Review 99:everyone goes on about brisa loca (which has an amazing bar / atmosphere) but the truth is you don't actually want to stay there - just go in the evening for the bar, it's open to all! masaya (which is literally round the corner) is by far the best hostel in santa marta - clean, fabulous pool (the one in brisa loca is just a dip pond), amazing roof top terrace, friendly staff, and super clean. it also has one of the best dorms ive ever seen - yes it's a shared room, but each bed has its own curtain, light and plug, with storage under the bed, so you get your privacy and your own space. and its one of the very few hostels in santa marta with air conditioning (A MUST IN THE SUMMER - NOT JOKING)

Review 100:Difficult to deal with the staff and manager full of excuses because the wi-fi didn't work and problems with the ac And safe in my room with no solutions, breakfast always the same eggs, tost, juice and coffee

Review 101:The building is beautiful well adapted for a hostel with good style

Review 102:The noise of the billiards above room 11

Review 103:Well located in the heart of Santa Marta Nice and helpful people at the réception desk The Terrace with the view on the city

Review 104:Not safe at night. No restaurants close or convenience stores open late.

Review 105:It is located at the center of the city... close to the port, the cathedral, etc. safe during the day. Easy to find transportation to El Rodadero, Taganga and Tayrona Park. The rooms are great, big, nice restroom, two pools, kitchen, activities to do at the hostel.

Review 106:This hostel was a great surprise for us. Great value for money. Good location, clean beds and bathroom. We loved the common areas, specially the kitchen where we prepared some food. The staff are really helpful and they organize lots of activities to get to know more about the city/country and people staying at the hostel. I will recommend it to my friends if they need to stay in Sta Marta.

Review 107:Despite arriving at 1pm and I could see my room was ready, I was made to wait until the 3pm check in time. The 'fully equipped' kitchen has no kettle, no microwave and no way of lighting the hob. A kettle would have been so useful! Don't come to use the pool - it was a funny brown colour.

Review 108:The location is great - in the middle of the hustle and bustle. Minutes from the bus to taganga and to tayrona. Supermarket and lots of restaurants nearby. Brand new room, very comfy. Bar closes around 11pm, so no late night music.

Review 109:Outside booze not allowed. Non-registered guests can't be onpremises after 10:30 pm. All private rooms should include a fridge atmimimum. Mine didn'T. Cold water only except last day. Weak showerpressure. They call it a rain shower head - I call it a joke. Americanslove great water pressure. On premises drink prices higher thansurrounding premises.

Review 110:Centrally located in historic Santa Marta. Repetitive breakfast menu buttasty. Hostel exterior is aesthetically yummy and fun. Engaging helpfulstaff. Safe. Secure. Near lots of restaurant and nightlife options. Moststaff speak English. American electrical outlets. No adapter needed fornewer dual voltage electronics. Group activities solicited. On sitetravel agency for half and full day excursions. Live music Saturday!Great a/C. Ceiling fan.

Review 111:room (no. 17) was either really hot during the day or due to the A/C freezing cold at night, also very dark and cramped

Review 112:Amazing house and terrace, great location

Review 113:The bed was literally like sleeping on a rock. I have never been so uncomfortable in my life. Our air conditioning didn't work for the first 1.5 days of our 3 day stay and for the remaining days we had to go down to the front desk to request someone come up with the master remote and turn it on as they did not bother to fix our broken remote. It would then shut down in the night and we would wake up in the sweltering heat. The front desk service was not great. I speak fluent Spanish but despite the fact that I spoke only in Spanish to the girls at the counter only one of them would speak Spanish back - the other insisted on speaking English to me however spoke Spanish to my Ecuadorian husband. Apparently my physical appearance negates my fluency in Spanish entirely? The neighbourhood was quite sketchy at night (I left my purse in the room at all times). I would not stay in downtown Santa Marta again as the beaches within the city are nothing special. Would be better off staying closer to Tayrona or in Rodadero.

Review 114:The rooftop pool was gorgeous and there is a second pool on the main floor. The shower was lovely and hot which is a real luxury on the coast of Colombia! The travel agency located within the hostel was fantastic and set up two great tours for us at reasonable prices - one to Cabo San Juan in Parque Tayrona and the other to Minca. Highly recommended!

Review 115:So worth your money!!!! Cheap dorm, but very nice rooms with private bathroom in the dorm. A beautiful roof terrace with pool, bar, hammocks, kitchen etc. Another pool downstairs aswell. Really good facilities and helpful staff. An office where you can book tours in the same building.

Review 116:It's a unique offering that the guys behind the Masaya have created! The perfect balance between hotel like rooms and services (pools, daily room cleaning) and the joyful experience of a hostel (daily activities organised in and outside the hostel, rooftop bar to socialize, and the general Friendly atmosphere). If you go to santa Marta you must stay there.

Review 117:- Problem with Booking.com reservation not being found, although this was taken care of very quickly. - Check in time of 3pm is very late, although we were able to relax by the pool.

Review 118:- Very good value for money. - Very comfortable beds. - Great pools (rooftop and courtyard). - Decent breakfast. - Rooftop bar great for a drink at night - Free activities everyday, dancing looked fun but was too tired to take part. - Close to important places for tourists in Santa Marta. - Despite number of people was quiet enough at night. - Staff all speak excellent English (not at all common in Colombia). - Place to leave bag when going to La Ciudad Perdida

Review 119:Unfortunately we got bed bugs (or ticks) here and vacated after one night. Such a shame because every other aspect was perfect. Staff were very helpful in refunding our money though

Review 120:Dorms are awesome, curtains on every bunk, rooftop pool and pool table are great, expensive but cool terrace, decent kitchen, good location

Review 121:bed bugs made it difficult to get a good nights sleep, kitchen had few dishes, staff/managers hiding the bed bug issue and despite efforts to address the problem it continues. They need to close and clean up the bug problem.

Review 122:This is a beautiful and modern place. Lovely rooftop pool, spacious and comfortable.

Review 123:It is one of a kind type of hostel, at least in Colombia. It combines affordable prices with stylish design and comfort. It was pleasent having neat bathrooms, luxurious yet practical amenities. Getting to know people from different cultures completes the perfect staying at Masaya. Thanks!

Review 124:Air con was erratic, very noisy and busy street, lots of backpackers, rooms hot and airless, very little natural light

Review 125:Modern, clean, great roof view, pool, breakfast

Review 126:Breakfast (was included) Shower drops only Mosquitoes in the room due to proximity of the room to the pool "assistant" (male) personnel not capable or willing to help, even when explaining things in (not that a bad) spanish good room climate for sleeping not possible tiny bathroom

Review 127:Can't complain about much except the wifi wasn't the best but still not a major issue.

Review 128:Bar far the best hostel I've stayed at in terms of comfort, very good beds. Also there's a good atmosphere at the hostel. They also have a desk where they can organize day trips for you.

Review 129:The price for the rooms could be more adequate for the location in the city. The wifi was not working properly.

Review 130:The building is very beautiful, with good rooms and a nice terrace with a charming swimming pool.

Review 131:I am Colombian and went with my bf who is from Germany. I think the Colombian atmosphere is totally missing. It doesn't feel the Colombian vibe at all and if that's what you are looking for then I would recommend to go somewhere else.

Review 132:The staff is mostly European therefore communication is not a problem at all. They are happy to explain anything you need and are really friendly. They also offer 10% discount in the restaurant next door (which btw it's run by the same Owner and the food is amazing. Prices are normal for Europeans but not for cheap for locals )

Review 133:- 4 persons dorm seemed to be a 5 persons with an 'emergency bed', so call it a 5 persons.. - dorm was too small for 5 sleeping and some smelly travellers. not many space for backpack. - luggage store to small for a big backpack.

Review 134:-rooftop bar and terrace -pools -travel agency in the front -advices for dinner and night out on the wall - curtains in the dorms - bathroom in the 4persons dorm -friendly staff

Review 135:Rigid check-out times (even when the room is not booked for the next night), pools are dirty, price of single rooms are a bit high.

Review 136:Beautiful view and roof top deck, friendly staff. Excellent location. Lots of amenities.
