Reviews for Rancho Grande

Review 1:I booked a night for the 6th to the 7th of January and when I went there they claimed that they didn't have a room, and that "6-7" means that I check in on the 7th...obviously not true. They need to update their system or learn to record bookings properly. The staff is not helpful or friendly.

Review 2:The beds were very comfortable in the 4-person dorm and the bathrooms very clean. The restaurant downstairs has good tartas.

Review 3:During my stay it seemed that Israelian kids had taken over the place. for some travellers they appear a bit loud and demanding - its hard to interact since they always travel in big groups and stay on their own. So It wasnt very relaxing in the public bar/area of the hostel ... They didnt give me my deposit back - should have thought about this myself ;) The Bar-Staff couldnt be more confused - anywany its more something to laugh about unless youre in a hurry

Review 4:It is a very big hostel. Its nothing special but as basecamp for hiking good enough. They serve food 24/7

Review 5:No equipment in the kitchens The toilets without locks

Review 6:The location close to many restaurants and supermarkets. It's also close to the beginning of the Fitz Roy trail. The staff (Ana at the reception especially) is great. The cleaning staff (clening done several times a day and at night time, brilliant) were saints. The rooms are bright and have lockers Everyone in the room gets a key of the room (safety is great) There are bathrooms and kitchens on both floors

Review 7:I didn't like the noise level. Half of the hostel guests are very young Israelis very noisy till quite late at night. The toilet doors don't have locks.

Review 8:I've liked the cosy atmosphere and the receptionist Ana that was very nice and helful. She accepted to change my booking when I arrived (she could have refused) and was very friendly. I ended up booking more days at the hostel. The shared areas and the rooms are cleaned every day and several times a day therefore the hostel is quite clean despite the fact that there are a lot of untidy guests

Review 9:staff was not friendly, kitchen is not complete at all asking for a mug is also a problem because they say they are an "restaurant....." heating in the room was continue on, it was way to warm. asked the staff to fix it but i think the are thinking he will leave within a few days so dont spend to much time on him. beds were not clean and hair from the previous were still on the pillow bleh...

Review 10:the mountains around the hostel are the best. to bad the staff and the hostel is the worst we ever had !

Review 11:Definitely a youth hostel, the level of noise was very high (even in the rooms) -- we did not stay for the full reservation because of this and found somewhere quieter down the street)

Review 12:Room & staff very nice, also convenient to have the restaurant/bar and kitchen on site

Review 13:Kitchen so small with little to use. Water went off twice while I was there just when I wanted a shower. No sign explaining this.

Review 14:Nice restaurant. Warm. Rooms were fine and clean. A nice place.

Review 15:The staff were unhelpfull and grumpy. The kitchens were tiny for the number of guests and had very scant equipment to cook (no plates/mugs/frying pans/stiring spoons ect) and despite signs saying 'ask staff for utensils' they were very unwiling to even lend a lighter. Most of the burners on the gas stoves dont work. They booked 7 people into the 4 bed room my friend was in. The hostel is very noisy even during the night. The toilet doors dont pass the toilet pan so you have to climb over the toilet. Ran out of water twice during 3 day stay. WIFI is so bad it took 2 hrs to book one flight. Would definitely not stay there again. Try the blue hostel across the street.

Review 16:Good heating and the bus drops you at the door.

Review 17:Very noisy into the early hours, with people drinking and shouting .kitchen facilities were dirty and poorly equipped.mixed dorms sometimes made it awkward.

Review 18:Meals were decent with very generous portions.

Review 19:Kitchen was horrible and not at all well equipped. Internet bad as everywhere in El Chaltén.

Review 20:Huge lockers in the rooms. Nice friendly staff. Good location.

Review 21:Poor wifi. Breaks down every now and then. Kitchen facilities such as pots, pan, basic fork and spoon were very limited to less than a handful. Mattress on the bed sinks in on both beds I had. For 200 pesos, it be nice to have breakfast included.

Review 22:Location. Spacious room.

Review 23:Very dirty, bed not clean, showers very dirty and flooded the floor. Toliet doors didn't even shut let alone lock

Review 24:Helpful staff, nice hot chocolate

Review 25:Kitchen facilities were not good; Poorly equipped and cramped

Review 26:Bedroom was spacious and comfortable. Restaurant and bar were reasonable,; food portions were large. Although on the edge of the town, the location was good for trecks. Staff very friendly and helpful

Review 27:I normally don't do this.. But I didn't like this place. The rooms and showers are Ok. But they are missing basic things, like enough pots and pans in their kitchen for example. The WiFi is bad too. Service isn't great. And there were too many loud people. Maybe this hostel is just to big for me.. I wouldn't recommend it..

Review 28:The communal kitchen was poorly equipped, I suspect because they want you to buy food from their restaurant instead. Couldn't even make two coffees because there was only one mug. It's a big place with lots of people getting up at various times for outdoor activities and every morning we were woken up by slamming doors in the hallway. We paid more than our friends who were staying at a nicer place close by. We also stayed in one of the cabins at El Relincho across the road and it was better value.

Review 29:The bed was comfortable and the room was always warm. The staff were helpful and the room was cleaned each day.

Review 30:Don't book this hostel over booking.com Reserve directly and currently pay half price (150 ARS,130 with HI discount) instead of 23 US$ + tax a night (might be a low season deal)

Review 31:Stinky rooms, crowded common areas during mid-day (because it turns into a restaurant), kitchen facilities are worse than poor, slightly far walk to the restaurants, internet is terrible.

Review 32:Proximity to the hiking trails.

Review 33:Needs more utensils and cookware in kitchen.

Review 34:Warm, cozy atmosphere, loft that was very inviting with people always lingering, music playing. Staff willing to let us move rooms to accomodate specific situations. Great value! Exchanged money on site too! Nice toasty heaters in room were most welcome. Can bring your own wine and beer to add to good meals served

Review 35:Location is good as it is just at d entrance to Foitz Roy trek. Like d idea of having power point inside d locker & spacious area for ppl to hang around. Hot water running good, room with big windows

Review 36:breakfast was just bread and jam but the staff were awesome so didn't matter

Review 37:location, staff were awesome very friendly, place was very clean and tidy

Review 38:Improving the kitchen situation would improve the rating a lot as the rest of the hostel is really okay. Wifi, of course, isn't strong, but after reading the horror stories concerning this topic I was quite surprised about hot well it worked.

Review 39:Warm, clean, spacious hostel at the north of El Chalten. Personnel is friendly, wifi works okay-ish for this part of the world. No breakfast included. Communal kitchen exists, but be prepared to improvise as pots are old and dishes are more than lacking. Also, it's far from the bus terminal, but close to some of the trekking paths (northern part of the villageI) and there is a big supermarket located closely.

Review 40:The wifi signal is very week. They should include breakfast. They have a 24h open restaurant but they don't include breakfast for shared rooms. The prices of the restaurant are astrological. Completly expensive... out of control.

Review 41:Very clean hostel. Staff are very friendly. We could use their oven to cook our pizza! Really recommended.

Review 42:I was there during low season. I can imagine this place could get VERY loud during high season as the walls are barely there. The kitchen is pretty sparse but I wasn't cooking so I didn't care.

Review 43:well situated for most trails if you're hiking. Breakfast was 70 pesos but came with coffee, juice, toasts + jam/butter, eggs and bacon. Good value. The staff were all nice. It was nice to have a hot shower at the end of long days and to have a place to read/write and chill.

Review 44:There are many places to sit around and chat and socialise. The facilities were great and very clean. Close to the main walks and I would definitely stay again.

Review 45:The main reason we wouldn't return was for the share noise of this place. There is a 24 hour restaurant in the building.. This makes it very loud at night when people are up till late drinking then walking past your door yelling at 2am. If your a light sleeper, i would avoid. The staff also seem like the had better things to worry about.

Review 46:Very clean, bathrooms always seemed empty and clean. Good strong hot water. We stayed 3 nights in a mixed 4 bedroom dorm, and we had the room to ourselves every night - great!

Review 47:Large and packed with people so you could find and meet other hiking buddies. Rock climbing area right behind the hostel. One of the bus can drop you right in front of the hostel.

Review 48:The kitchen is almost empty, you have to ask for anything even plates. They'd prefer you at the restaurant

Review 49:The showers where big and the dormitory comfortable

Review 50:staff was hit or miss, some huge help, some just didn't care. A little far from terminal. Internet is the worst ever.

Review 51:location was good, 24h restaurant, rooms had huge lockers, rooms are big enough. Easy to book bus tkts and they even pick you at the hostel, a plus since hostel is out of reach of terminal. Good place to meet other hiker fellows.

Review 52:It's easy for your stay at rancho grande to feel very impersonal with the large amount of people/tour groups coming and going. The attitudes of the staff reflect the turnover of guests, not that they were rude, but I wouldn't describe them as welcoming.

Review 53:- Few plugs. - Wi-Fi doesn´t work (but that's an issue across town) - Showers with curtain (no door).

Review 54:- Room was cleaned every day (not usual at hostels). - Plenty of showers. - Big, BIG lockers for each bed (bring a padlock). You can fit a large suitcase easily. - Very comfy beds. - 24/7 restaurant with good prices.

Review 55:Shocking kitchen with no utensils and the restaurant is expensive, useless WiFi! Not suitable for backpackers! There are better hostels to stay at!

Review 56:Good location close to the start point of Fitz Roy!

Review 57:Wifi unreliable but that is generally the case in El Chalten as a whole

Review 58:Excellent location right by start of Lagna de Los Tres trail and on a Main Street with bars and restaurants. Helpful staff and decent food in the restaurant

Review 59:Only stayed 1 night, and rarely write reviews but felt compelled on this one... Unfriendly and unhelpful, at best reluctant to help, staff. Very busy and noisey in most rooms it seems, as the social / eating area is close and walls are very thin. Room wasn't changed, bed and towels used, when I arrived in it at 12:30 pm yet a late check out by an hour so I could attempt to see the mountain on my last morning was bluntly and immediately refused. Room was shabby anyway, toilet pretty grim. At p$550 per night for a double room i have stayed for less in much much nicer and friendlier places in Argentina. Wifi doesn't work, anywhere or at any time during my stay. Excuse is something about having to reboot it regularly as the satellite moves or some rubbish.

Review 60:Location is good for getting out to Mt Fitz Roy

Review 61:We needed reliable internet for a couple of days and with El Chaltén being so remote and using satellite internet it was a definite inconvenience. It is expensive for wat it is but if you want to see the beauty all around you have to deal with it.

Review 62:Location location location

Review 63:Couldn't use restaurant one night - full of US kids from outside.

Review 64:Overnight bus dropped at hostel door in the rain. Great hiking options on the doorstep. Good information from helpful staff.

Review 65:Wifi was dodgy but nothing you can do about it!

Review 66:Good staff Facilities were good Staff organised excursions and buses Close to start of walks Fun vibe

Review 67:European prices (high season). Room floor quite dirty. Kitchen not good furnished (often you have to wait to get free plates and pan).

Review 68:Good position at the beginning of Fitz Roy trail, comfortable common room

Review 69:They have many shared rooms but no common kitchen utilities. People come to El Chalten to trek, climb etc, so many people cook themselves. Common kitchen was dirty and poor kitchen equipment. Staff is not so friendly too!

Review 70:Location is good

Review 71:Limited kitchen utensils erratic wifi was to be expected, don't count on it in whole of El chaltern

Review 72:Helpful staff, comfy beds nice atmosphere in cafe bar restaurant area

Review 73:Free wifi was terrible.

Review 74:Great bed, especially post hike. They let you use the kitchen, showers e storage room even if you have to check out early in your last day.

Review 75:Breakfast could be better, with tea or coffee and bread and jelly or butter. For an extra 20 pesos you can add either eggs and bacon or a fruit salad. Wifi is available in the public areas but is very slow and most of the time fails to connect.

Review 76:The public areas are very nice, and the comfy bed was great before and after trails. Everything was very clean and you can store your gear in a little room while you go trekking. They also let you use the public kitchen and bathroom/showers for the day if you have to checkout in the morning but your trip back is only later in the day.

Review 77:wifi was only "intermittently" working in the common areas. the room was boiling. we asked to switch off the radiator in our but it was not possible so we slept all nights with the window open.

Review 78:the atmosphere of the place is great. our doubled room was definitely good size and clean. You meet several people coming here to do the walks and climbs and share a lot of talks and experiences.

Review 79:Toilets were a bit shabby. When we came back 4 days later the staff tried to charge 1.5 times the price for the same dorms. Only after explaining we could have the same price as the first night (booked with booking.com) but we rather went to another place as there are plenty other places around.

Review 80:Large central area with cafe. Relatively large, easy to meet people if you like. You can hang outside

Review 81:The "continental" breakfast was bad, tea or coffee, some super hard toast, butter and strawberry jelly. No options for the flavour of the tea or the jelly.

Review 82:The hostel has exellent location, staff is nice and helpful and the dounle rooms eith bathroom are really nice for a hostel.

Review 83:Slow internet - but El Chalten is provided by patchy satellite internet so it was understandable. The location was a bit off, even in a small village it was really way off on the fringe

Review 84:Great staff that let us put our stuff there while out camping (even without further bookings), good facilities

Review 85:The shower overflowed. With our muddy shoes too, the bedroom ended up swimming in filthy mud. Although id recommend to pack backers as it is what it is, I was actually pleased to leave. There is a member of staff on in the day that doesn't speak a word of English making it quite hard to communicate.

Review 86:It's value for money. It did the trick for the night we stayed in El Chaltern. The gorgeous dog!!

Review 87:The bus from and to el calafate stops right in front of it. The front desk is really helpful! Staying here feels much more comfortable than other hostels I stayed.

Review 88:- nothing !

Review 89:- Staff was friendly and helpful - Continental Breakfast was OK ! - Very clean hotel (specially shared bathroom) - Shared Kitchen was well equiped - The hotel's restaurant was very good !

Review 90:- Kitchen 2 cook by yourself was dirty and old. tip for hostel: A lot of people use this be sure this is clean and the equipment is good 2 use. tip 2: Put some basic things in it Oil, Salt/pepper, sugar, lighter...

Review 91:- Breakfast - Staff really friendly

Review 92:We went hiking the trails in July and the information given to us was very informal, yeah it's fine, no problem type of info which turned out to be incorrect. Double check with tourist info as well. Breakfast was pretty ordinary, though we got a nice coffee so that was fine.

Review 93:Staff were very helpful and they spoke English. Good food (bought dinners) and service Relaxed feel, though it was winter and quiet Close to hike trails Good information

Review 94:Strategic position, bar open 24/24 ,

Review 95:Isras everywhere y menues caros.

Review 96:Nothing in the kitchen

Review 97:long waiting for the breakfast to be served

Review 98:very warm atmosphere

Review 99:Staff weren't very helpful or accommodating, terrible kitchen, WiFi is satellite and very slow

Review 100:It was very clean with great showers

Review 101:the kitchen is small

Review 102:No breakfast included. Poorly equipped kitchen

Review 103:Location, friendly staff, booked buses for us etc

Review 104:The breakfast was really poor and limited

Review 105:We stayed in a nice clean room Location only a few minutes away from the walking trails

Review 106:Should say no WiFi, as there is no wifi. Price is expensive for what you get, which is a bed

Review 107:Walls are paper thin so can hear everything at night when trying to sleep.

Review 108:Room was comfortable and clean. Hostel could arrange trips etc for you.

Review 109:communal atmosphere of in house restauant

Review 110:Nice place to stay for starting hiking from the village

Review 111:Good. Clean. Comfort. Space available for after hiking time.

Review 112:20% VAT not included in price displayed not enough dishes, cups, pots, 2( pots), 6 plates, 3 cups!!!

Review 113:fastest m internet conection around

Review 114:Lively atmosphere.

Review 115:Location is awesome as it is very close to the De Los Tres hike. The breakfast can be better

Review 116:Very clean room and big bathroom. Restaurant open 24/h. Staff gave us good advice for the hikes. Great common area.

Review 117:lots of people to meet, delicious hot chocolate and chocolate cake, nice staff

Review 118:Dåligt wifi.

Review 119:Restaurang och bar.

Review 120:Kitchen communal etiquette poor, hostel usually crowded, dorm room ricketty

Review 121:Great stay pity about the wifi. But cleanliness and meeting other travellers is more important than wifi

Review 122:The kitchen wasn't well equiped and too small!

Review 123:The rooms were clean and they had big lockers

Review 124:WIFI is satellite based so it takes time to connect.

Review 125:Super supportive staff, very clean room. Home of trekkers and travelers.

Review 126:the wi fi is poor.

Review 127:the steff is friendliy, the location is owsome!

Review 128:Very noisy, quiet areas not enforced.

Review 129:Great environment, lively atmosphere, staff very helpful
