Reviews for El Viajero Hostel Cartagena

Review 1:Facilities were not very up to date, but seemed in line with Old Town. Would have prefered more thorough cleaning, but they were kept mostly clean.

Review 2:Excellent and helpful staff.

Review 3:I had a private room that was very very small and only had one bedside cupboard and no place or space to leave or unpack your bag. Breakfast was ok but could have maybe had a few more options.

Review 4:Great location in the walled city, nice atmosphere in the hostel.

Review 5:Not ideal if you're a light sleeper or want an early night as people sit outside the rooms talking till very late at night. Also its the only hostel I've been to where they give you sheets on check in and tell you to make your own bed, and you have to pull them off and return them when you check out. Given this, I'm not really sure why I had to hang around till 2pm till I could check in, its not like they had to change the bedsheets...a/c also doesn't run during the day so you roast in the heat.

Review 6:Good location, facilities and super social. Lots of people around to chat with and onsite bar is quite good, if a little pricey.

Review 7:There are a lot of people in this hostel so it might not be everyone's cup of tea. For me it felt too crowded. It is also very hot as no breeze gets in. The air con is only on at night but very strongly so it gets very cold. Not enough plug points. The lights in the rooms are not very bright and you often have to supplement with a torch. Breakfast is quite poor.

Review 8:Nice staff and good location. On site bar and dance classes.

Review 9:This hostel is definitely for the younger set.

Review 10:It was a fun hostel environment, lots of travelers to meet and lots of trips to book through the hostel.

Review 11:Breakfast was included but not fantastic. Just muesli cereal, toast, coffee and orange juice on offer. Would have paid little extra to get cooked options like scrambled eggs and more choice of fruits. Bathrooms were OK, but showers at times looked not quite as clean as hoped.

Review 12:Great hostel in old town area, close to restaurants, nightlife and old walled city. Staff were very helpful organising trips to Playa Blanca and general advice. Free wifi and Internet to use and bar to grab a few drinks.

Review 13:Quite a party hostel so noisy until the early hours and air con system means it's blasted all night (and you freeze) and not on in the day (so you can't really stand being in the room in the day)

Review 14:Great location, comfortable rooms and good facilities

Review 15:The hostel is very good, good breakfast, clean showers and bathrooms, air-conditioned in the dorms (the best part because the heat is unbearable in the city), clean sheets, spacious rooms, wi-fi works fine at the room.

Review 16:Wifi not the greatest.

Review 17:We stayed in a private room which was very clean. Staff were very helpful and had excellent English. Great amenities within the hostel, including a popular bar.

Review 18:There are not many bathrooms and showers and they´re outside the rooms.

Review 19:I loved the room. It´s equiped with AC, safebox and the beds are sturdy and confortable.

Review 20:A/C from evening until morning only (though that's pretty common)

Review 21:Comfortable beds, friendly people, clean facilities, lots of showers, cheap beer at the hostel bar, free breakfast

Review 22:Hot during the day, they turn the a/c off.. Breakfast needs help.

Review 23:This really is a good hostel. The staff was very helpful at all times. They stock cheap beer and also have a bar on site. Had a great time talking to other travelers as most were eager to chat. The rooms were clean and the bathrooms were okay. Very good location too. Breakfast is lacking, but its free. The wifi is free and strong. The only issue is they turn the room a/c off during the day, so if you come back sweaty and hot and want a cool down, it wont be in your room.

Review 24:I have been bitten by bedbugs in room 10 all along my arm. A friend was badly bitten in room 11 the night before. She then got moved to a different room as her room received special cleaning. But my room had received special cleening the night before I got bitten, so I am really not sure how this special cleaning looks like! That is really not nice, it seems to be quite infested.

Review 25:The staff was so friendly and nice. The woman at the counter memorized all guests names. She lent me her private spare iPhone charger, and even let me take it to the Rosario islands for 2 days, upon which I returned it to her. Really great! The location is also fantastic. It is a good place for solo travellers.

Review 26:Staff unattentive, and sometime rude. Ok I understand that most of the people at this place are bovine backbackers but still you can try to make an effort, smile and be nice to clients.

Review 27:great location

Review 28:I didn't like that the top bunk bed didnt have a bar on the side.

Review 29:The beds were extremely comfortable and breakfast was included.

Review 30:-beds with plastic - Air conditioning a bit weak.

Review 31:- safe in the room - activities - staff very friendly and helpful - Good Breakfast

Review 32:Staff seemed to be disinterested in helping the travelers. High prices for a hostal.

Review 33:could be cleaner in the rooms

Review 34:Well located basic hostel in the old part of Cartagena. Breakfast is good

Review 35:Good location, staff, environment

Review 36:Air-conditioning in the dormitory was too cold.

Review 37:Very friendly and helpful stuff. Very good location and splendid place to hang out.

Review 41:Food.

Review 42:The personnel and environment.

Review 43:price

Review 44:Localization, installations, party and climate

Review 45:Very crowded.

Review 46:Location.

Review 47:The staff were not very welcoming and they could not find our booking. We booked a double private room and they ended up putting us in an 8 bed dorm on our own but charging us the same price. Not many showers for the number of guests. We also tried to book a shuttle to Santa Marta for the next day and were told to just show up on time in the morning, and when we did so we were told we had to have a reservation! luckily we got the last 2 seats on the bus. The kitchen was a mess and very crowded.

Review 48:Very lively hostel. Good breakfast.

Review 49:No private bath, as I had booked. No air conditioning when there are other hotels around the same price range with it. Hard to sleep in this city without it. No hot water. Not a big deal but should have at the price charged. Room was right on the street where people honk and make noise all day and night. Horse-drawn carriages come down the street until after midnight. Big cockroaches in the kitchen and dining area, along with ants and other bugs everywhere. While they're not overbearing, it's still gross. I was asked on checkout if I enjoyed my stay and I mentioned these things. The response was "oh, yes, that makes sense." Way overpriced for what you get. Book a B&B or boutique hotel for the same price or less and get A/C, private bath and a lot more peace and quiet.

Review 50:The location is good - within the old city walls and pretty central to most everything. Very close to a supermarket.

Review 51:When I booked, I thought I was booking a private room with a bathroom, as I paid for the most expensive room. However, it appears that there are two different types of private rooms, one with private baths (probably in the main hostel building) and one without, however its hard to tell from the names of the room and their description which is which. None of the rooms in the annex had private baths and I didn´t know until after we paid that I wasn´t getting what I expected. Also, there is no AC in the annex (which is a huge deal since the weather is always in the 90s F / high 30s C). Plus, I was in room 18, which opens to the street. Sometimes there was a little bit of a breeze, but mostly it was just very noisy with the fruit vendors, constant car horns and horse carriages. So it was very hard to sleep between the heat and the noise. Very bad value for the money. I ended up moving to a cheaper hotel, which was very pleasant that had AC, a private bath and breakfast.

Review 52:I stayed in the annex to the hostel, which is about half a block away from the main building and was made up of private rooms. The architecture was fantastic - traditional spanish colonial style - and the annex was much quieter than the main hostel. I couldn´t get on the wifi at the main hostel, but the wifi at the annex was very fast and my friend and I had the kitchen and most of the facilities to our self.

Review 53:The manager, she doesnt listen, her actitud is not for customer service. I didnt like that in the website doesnt say that you have to share bathroom.

Review 54:We were an extended family of 8 and staying over Xmas so wereparticularly grateful that despite been very busy and booked up themanageress managed to alter the system to allow us to stay the total 4nights together in one 8 bedded dormitory without having to change roomsor split up as was originally going to be the case.

Review 55:It was very over priced for what you get. You can stay for half theprice somewhere else with aircon and private bathroom. Rip off!
