Reviews for The Old Courthouse Inn

Review 1:My only problem is that I found the mattress too soft which gave me a back ache.

Review 2:The place had character. It is a proud part of the history of Powell River. So many other places I have stayed in the past could be anywhere, they are just a place to sleep. Not this Inn!

Review 3:Hot water took a long time to get to the room. No counter space in the bathroom.

Review 4:The building is very interesting with lots of antiques and information in the hallways. The room felt a little like a very nice hostel. Only one chair for a room that would sleep four? But there wasn't room for any more chairs. Breakfast included at Edie's in the building was very good food and friendly staff.

Review 5:We loved our entire experience.

Review 6:We have stayed here a few times before and love the vibe of the Inn along with the comfortable bed, soft sheets and top notch Cafe. I haven't even mentioned yet the friendly helpful staff. I would never consider staying anywhere else.

Review 7:We didn't realize the old court house has a direct view of the Pulp Mill in front,a vacant lot to the side and back and a building site to the other side .Very disappointing

Review 8:The building and inside were fascinating .It was comfortable and clean for an older heritage building. The restaurant in the building was excellent for breakfasts

Review 9:The bed was a little soft & the room was too cramped for us. Very little room for our luggage. Poor lighting for reading. No phone in the room.

Review 10:The breakfast was very good. The staff were friendly & helpful.

Review 11:We stayed for 13 nights and the bed was a bit too soft for us.

Review 12:We enjoyed and looked forward to breakfast each morning. The décor of the place was great. Loved the old 1940-50s look.

Review 13:No robes, bed not comfy, no extra hooks in bathroom. The breakfast is good, thought you know that Kelly is not in the kitchen as the standards are not the same and some was cold.

Review 14:The staff are the warmest.

Review 15:Bed was old and saggy. Bathroom was pokey, (tiny) Consumables poor quality. Refrigerator was "Faulty" Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Owners were businesslike. Can't complain about the position. We chose it, but initially disappointed.

Review 16:Free,wifi.....which is expected nowadays. Breakfast was brilliant. Clean, tidy and interesting.

Review 17:The hotel is right next to a large paper mill factory, blocking what would have been a lovely view of the coast. Fortunately we were at the back so were not affected by noise but I suspect rooms at front were. The rooms are furnished with a mixture of older furniture - quirky. The hotel had a slightly musty smell to it.

Review 18:Good breakfast with helpful cafe staff. Different hotel with local history.

Review 19:There is a slight sweet smell of wet paper everywhere. You are about two miles from the main town of Powell River. There is lots of bric a brac everywhere, like visiting an elderly aunt. Get the room with a view and air con #14, Some rooms face a parking lot and are grim old police offices.

Review 20:Really cool historic Tudor style building in a old company town where paper was king and the newsprint was made. Adjacent Patricia Theater and Brew Pub are worthwhile. This is an up and coming tourist remake of gritty industrial town. Staff are helpful and breakfast in the cafe is great.

Review 21:Our room was very hot. Air conditioning was hard to work in this room with the curtain over the air conditioner. We really could not use it with the curtains closed. Recommend something to hold the curtains up from the air conditioner.

Review 22:Clean room; good breakfast; television. Reasonably comfortable bed/king size.

Review 23:LOVE the breakfast! Always amazing! Wonderful, attentive staff, in a wonderful atmosphere, big fan of History, so it's a wonderful place to be for me!

Review 24:This is a small boutique hostelry, very charming and true to the proprietor's vision. I liked all the antiques, my room, the background music at breakfast and dinner (classic standards, Ella, Billie, Rosemary Clooney, Louis etc.), and, the breakfast at Edie Rae's Cafe. The owners and staff were all most cheerful and accommodating.

Review 25:NOTHING bad to say about the Inn at all.

Review 26:The Inn is a very unique place - TONS of history & a wonderful story behind the owners (JP & Kelly). It overlooks the water, and while the mill is nearby, there is no smell at all. Staff extremely pleasant - LOVED our stay and would highly recommend it to others.

Review 27:We did not have any complaints and the hosts were quite helpful. I would go there again.

Review 28:The building is full of antique furniture and gewgaws. Lots of books, old and new. It is in a Old Township that is slowly being restored. Most interesting.

Review 29:outstandind view at a working factory, noisy. you can't miss the hotel, follow the smokes! Outdated charm should not mean aged bed, weird heating and boiling/ freezing shower.

Review 30:The many antiques placed around the hallways and in the room added a comfortable nostalgia. The staff were very friendly and helpful - in particular, the waitress in the café.

Review 31:JP & Kelly fabulous hosts; excellent staff. Historic Courthouse tastefully decorated with antiquities and photos, taking you back in time. Clean. Menu breakfast (included) delicious - by far the best we've had on our trip. Hosts knowledgeable on dining, hiking, biking, water activities and local entertainment. Highly recommended

Review 32:Nothing I didn't like. I honestly didn't expect and wouldn't have been disappointed to have less than the very high standard of service and product of room and meals and reputation around town ...all very good. Nothing we didn't like. Had 2 rooms. Rates were good.

Review 33:Friendly and Professional at the same time ...nothing so calculatedly planned that they couldn't change and tweak a bit here and bit there. The breakfasts were outstanding ...full Breakfast ...not just the run'o the mill stuff! Air conditioned and very well decorated and equipped furnishings like the shower and bathroom plus the comfortable bed.

Review 34:Only problem was a blown fuse which darkened our room just as we wanted to shower and dress. The owner/manager could not be found, so we had to forgo the shower in order to leave for the ferry.

Review 35:The setting is unique. The furniture and period decorations are interesting and attractive. The owner accommodating, and the breakfast excellent. Restaurant just across the street very good for dinner.

Review 36:JP, my host, was very kind, as were the people running the cafe in the morning. I loved the old furniture and antiques from his grandparents throughout the building. Both interesting and familiar/cozy -- like someone else in a review said, "like walking into your grandparents' house. The room was very cute, and the bed was very comfortable, surprisingly so actually, so I slept really well. Surrounding area was also very interesting -- historical district. I wouldn't stay anywhere else going forward.

Review 37:We loved the world charm of The Old Courthouse Inn, its history and the furnishings. Breakfast was ample and delicious. The staff were very friendly especially Coco :) We will be back!

Review 38:Poor wash basin drainage (very slow). Missing drain plug operating knob. Push pins for drape hold-backs. Whole room - named "Police Station" needs updating.

Review 39:Good size, comfortable bed, good shower. Yvonne in "Edie Rae's" was just awesome, great breakfast.

Review 40:We loved the charming vintage touches all over the hotel. We stayed in the Jury room which was actually larger than we requested at no extra charge. The owners were very friendly and the food delicious. We recommended the hotel to friends for their first time to Powell River. Really interesting area with tons of history.

Review 41:They market the "Ocean View" and yes the Ocean is there, but really your view is of the huge smoking pulp mill. Marketing should emphasize that you are staying in an historic townsite

Review 42:Interesting historic building, originally the Old Courthouse now turned into a hotel. Rooms are individually decorated with antiques. They include a free breakfast with the room rate which is very good value.

Review 43:The charm and character of this place!!! The comfort is great, but by far and away my favorite part of the hotel was the environment and the charm of it.

Review 44:Earlier reviews on pulp mill views were confirmed. Had researched beforehand but thought it couldn't be that bad, but was. Room was small but bed was comfortable and clean. Breakfast not wonderful - sorry.

Review 45:A little noisy with sirens in the night

Review 46:We enjoyed staying here as it was very quaint with all the antiques and old charm. Very cozy and private. Breakfasts were awesome and included in price. Will stay again. Nice people

Review 47:The view is discouraging. But it was mitigated by the fact that the paper mill was fairly quiet and not smelly!

Review 48:The room was very clean and the furnishings were charming. There were plenty of amenities that one expects at the rate we paid. The restaurant was very good, and staff were informative and pleasant. We liked that breakfast was included and it was very tasty.

Review 49:The Old Courthouse is a beautiful old building. It is full of charm and history. Everyone we met were friendly and helpful, unfortunately we were a day to late to eat in the bistro but the breakfast was awesome!

Review 50:First time staying here. No bar soap In bathrooms. Kleenex box was almost empty. Bathroom was tiny. Door opened onto the toilet. Perhaps look for a different room rather than #12.

Review 51:Staff was friendly and furnishings were nice.

Review 52:Friendly staff, as if they already knew you.Fabulous artefacts throughout the place. Loved the 1938 National Geographics on bedside table. Edie Rae's cafe for excellent breakfast cooked for you.

Review 53:The ocean view was really a view of the pulp mill.

Review 54:The interior design of the entire hotel with the antique theme. The owners have put their personal touch on the entire place with their own family history. Great breakfast.

Review 55:Can't ignore that giant pulp & paper mill below the hotel. Room furnishings a bit tired but fully functional. Not a bargain considering the industrial view and slight but definite pulp mill odor.

Review 56:Close to the Vancouver Island/Sunshine Coast ferry. Quirky antiques & decor, interesting literature available regarding the town history, Pleasant & helpful manager, with excellent dinner suggestion. Many breakfast options (most free, including some healthy choices, plus a few add-ons),fresh-baked biscuits, and very friendly waitress

Review 57:Breakfast was nice, but you can only get a coffee and a choice of breakfast meals for free. If you want more, you have to pay. The drain in the shower didn't work good. No shops nearby, the new town center is near the ferry. Would have liked some extra sockets for loading cell phones.

Review 58:Easy parking, interesting self-walking historical tour of the houses nearby. Interesting building and historical items. WiFi is excellent, with just a single password needed, no login screens and stuff. Weather pressure is good. Friendly staff.

Review 59:It is located directly facing the Catalyst pulp mill. The mill operates 24/7 so bring ear plugs and eye shades for a good night's sleep.

Review 60:This hotel is located right in the heart of a National Historic Site. My wife and I took the walking tour and we found it to be very interesting. The hotel is stocked with lots of antiques from the previous century. If you want experience, this is where to get it.

Review 61:• Despite repeated efforts on our part to check in the day we arrived, staff didn’t check us in till halfway through our two-night stay, and then made us pay entire bill • We put “Please make up my room” sign on doorknob and came back in early evening to find room had not been made up. Had to ask staff for fresh towels and dishes • No bedside table or lamp on one side of king-size bed, and no room to drag anything over there to improvise (wardrobe too close to bed) • Ill-fitting screens on windows let in lots of mosquitoes • Bathroom sink faucet too high above sink; splashed water everywhere • Awakened periodically throughout the night by a barking dog • In-house restaurant unexpectedly closed for dinner on Friday night, with no advance notice. (Hotel is separate from main part of town and there are few dining options in vicinity.) • Restaurant was horribly understaffed, especially for breakfast service on second morning, and staff were not properly trained (management even admitted this at the time)

Review 62:• Awesome view of the pulp mill with its epic billowing steam clouds • Corridors decorated with creepy antiques and ephemera • High ceilings • Staff were very friendly

Review 63:The inn is quite close to the pulp and paper mill but then everything in the old town is. It was still worth it to be in the old town.

Review 64:My wife and I felt like we had stepped back in time by 80 years when we entered our room with period furniture and 1920's vintage lampshades. We loved the atmosphere and the queen bed was super comfy. We also loved the full breakfast we had in the cafe. This is the best place to stay in the old town.

Review 65:This is a unique boutique hotel that is full of antiques. Our room was small but comfortable, and both it and the bathroom were clean. Sometimes not an easy feat in an old building :) There was a choice of breakfast items in Edie Rae's Cafe, all delicious.

Review 66:Very bad location behind a factory, air condition old and loud, small rooms, terrible smell.

Review 67:The people are very nice. Good collection of DVDs, especially for kods (Harry Potter, Starwars).

Review 68:We were greated by Yvonne - what a lovely Lady, we felt like we had just arrived home. And her knowledge of the area is amazing and she was so helpful. If you needed it - she had it. John Paul and Kelly are super hosts making everyone feel welcome. [Kelly even suggested we borrow a cushion 'from the Pew' to take to the old Patricia Theatre as some of the seats could get pretty hard]. He was 100% right and we appreciated the cushions. Dinner was great and we were presently surprised when John Paul's family namely - Edie Rae - arrived for dinner as well. What a nice family. We so enjoyed our stay and would recommend The Courthouse Inn to anyone who visits Powell River. This hotel has the best beds and is well appointed in every way.

Review 69:rooms are themed and creative - you feel you are visiting family The historic theme is well-developed I felt at home It was easy to find from the ferry.

Review 70:This hotel has a lot of character, antiques line the hallways and decorate the rooms. A living history of days gone by. Staff is fantastic, well worth a stay. Not your average humdrum hotel.

Review 71:If you have problems sleeping, be aware that there is a steady "hum" from the mill. Similar to a fridge noise, but unrelenting.

Review 72:The ambiance, particularly the wonderful collection of vintage items decorating the hallways. And the eggs benny. The breakfast are very good.

Review 73:The building needs renovations. The pipes in the bedroom were noisy - they need to be insulated and behind drywall. The furnishings are old-fashioned - I know its supposed to be an old courthouse - but do that in the hallways. The fan in the bathroom was noisy - put it on a separate switch to be used when needed. More lamps in the living room and no highlights. The room needed a proper closet. It also needed more electric outlets.

Review 74:The cafe breakfasts were excellent.

Review 75:It was a very interesting place to visit, with much local history visible. The breakfast food was excellent. While it was a very hot day, the control of the temperature in two rooms was fine, once figured out.

Review 76:Dreadful location, stayed one night instead of two. The hotel looks charming from the front but the entrance, at the rear, was uninviting - even depressing. Hotel cluttered with stuff.

Review 77:Our breakfast was good.

Review 78:Can't say enough about the staff!! Kelly, JP, and Yvonne in particular made my stay such a treat. It was like staying with old friends in their wonderful home. Food was amazing, atmosphere quaint and inviting, and such attention to detail. I will be coming back. Miss you guys already. Kathaumixw 2016 !!!

Review 79:The room was HOT! And the snarky note I got for accidentally leaving the window open and the air conditioner on

Review 80:The hotel is unique, the restaurant was good.

Review 81:There was no place for your suitcase to stay open. There was no place for toiletries.

Review 82:We liked the coziness of the place. We liked the antiques We liked the comfort you felt by staff The breakfast was absolutely AWESOME !!

Review 83:The website says that every room has an ocean view. While it is true that you could look out of a window and see the ocean from one of the rooms, it could not be called a view. To enjoy the sunset, I took a kitchen chair and sat in the adjoining parking lot. It is just up the hill from the paper mill, so even the ocean view has an industrial flavor.

Review 84:The best thing about the stay at the hotel was the breakfast at Edie Ray's Café, the restaurant that is part of the hotel. It was everything you could hope for and then some. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the large kitchen had every kind of appliance you could want, there was a washer and dryer with complementary laundry detergent and the bathtub was an oversize soaking tub that I thoroughly enjoyed. We were not actually in the hotel itself, but in a newer building to the north.

Review 85:Having my bathroom across the hall.

Review 86:Bed was super comfortable. Breakfast was great. The old pictures and antiques.

Review 87:Amazing breakfast included in your stay!

Review 88:A destination in and of itself. Best hotel stay ever!

Review 89:Not much we this was our second trip there

Review 90:The way the place look very comfortable and friendly

Review 91:Nice and cosy feel and ambience. We liked the "olde world" theme and history of Powell River.

Review 92:The staff, the ambiance, and the decor of the hotel

Review 93:poor location, noisy pipe noise from adjacent rooms

Review 94:Friendly staff, excellent breakfast, eclectic

Review 95:The factory/mill obstructs the view.

Review 96:The breakfast and the well old kept room.

Review 97:The owner was terrific

Review 98:The room had everything we needed. The breakfast was awesome. The location was central. The pillows were fluffy. The bed was comfortable.

Review 99:Paper mill between the hotel and the sea.

Review 100:Full of character. Beautiful surroundings nearby.

Review 101:Ugly, noisy pulp mill next door.

Review 102:Character of the historic building, excellent breakfast and friendly, attentive staff.

Review 103:Very Helpful staff.

Review 104:beautiful period decorations - the whole feel of the place was like stepping back in time...wonderful food, great background music...excellent!

Review 105:Unusual detail of decor throughout establishment and history

Review 106:Pillows.

Review 107:Will make any trip special, great staff, and the breakfast was delicious.

Review 108:Kelly and JP are excellent hosts. The breakfast in Edie Rae's Cafe was excellent and a pleasant surprise.

Review 109:It was all good.

Review 110:Great old classic building with great antique furniture etc. Great people running the place.

Review 111:no view....next to a factory....nothing around.....

Review 112:The old building and decoration are attactive.

Review 113:Friendly staff Wonderful breakfast Memorabilia in room and hallways Spacious room

Review 114:Nothing.

Review 115:I liked the antiques around the building.

Review 116:Zero complaints

Review 117:Atmosphere, comfort, quiet, full delicious breakfast

Review 118:Beautiful historic building with a lot of atmosphere. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was great.
