Reviews for Pension Sonnenberg
Review 1:The people in charge of the pension are really nice. You can see they put a lot of effort into making guests comfortable (for instance, for breakfast, they had set a table specifically with a nice view on the mountains for me!) This place is close, but isolated from the "touristy" attractions, so very very quiet.
Review 2:Having to share the shower with everyone on the floor Didn't realize had to get a cable car, train, and cab up to the hotel. Almost didn't make the last cable car up
Review 3:Magnificent views of the mountains The rustic alpine experience Great food especially the buffet breakfast The amazing walk down the trail to Wengen with gorgeous views and waterfalls. My daughter said it was the closest she's felt to heaven
Review 4:Shared bathroom (with see-through shower doors) was not a problem as there were very few guests when we stayed, but could be tricky if the hotel is fully booked.
Review 5:Perfectly peaceful location a 30 minute walk from Muerren. Beautiful view of the mountains. Great breakfast.
Review 6:Most amazing view! All the food was delicious, not terribly expensive. The Apfelkuken was especially delicious. The dorms were quite comfy (but bring your own sheets!) Perfectly situated to hikes, but be prepared for a long walk to get there. So wonderful!
Review 7:Great location. Not very close to Murren train station, but on the hiking trail to Schilthorn. Great place for people who would like to hike all the way up.
Review 8:Nice quiet place in a great location - but beware, it is not in Mürren itself. To get there from the train station, a steep uphill walk of 30min is necessary.
Review 9:the facilities is a bit lacking. The power plug is too few and the shower were also not enough to be shared by many people. But overall i like the stay.
Review 10:It has a really great view and the bed was comfortable too.
Review 11:It is a longer walk to the hotel from town center, uphill, so pack light.
Review 12:Hotel is in quiet location, with beautiful mountain views. Excellent spot to spend the night if you are hiking the higher trails. We would recommend this hotel to friends and family.
Review 13:The whole area is 2 to 3 times more expensive then other parts of Europe.
Review 14:The view from the room was great. The staff were very helpful and nice. Free breakfast was good.
Review 15:The rooms were VERY simple for the price we payed. Less nice than a Swiss youth hostel but 30% higher price. If you arrive after 17:00 (when Almendhubel-bahn has stopped running) then you need to take a taxi to reach it.
Review 16:Marvelous location in the middle of the slope, extraordinary views. The staff was really thoughtful and service-minded.
Review 17:This resort has the best view in this area. You do have to park and take cable cars up the mountain to Murren then walk up 2 km to the resort. We were tired walking up (65 yrs old) but the view was more than worth it.
Review 18:We had the entire pension to ourselves (early Sept). The staff was kind, enthusiastic and attentive. The views were breathtaking and since the alp was being hayed at the time, we also got to see how that was done as well. A very relaxing and charming place.
Review 19:We switched rooms from the group dormitory room to a singles room. It was about $20 more/night which is reasonable, however, you pay additional per person. Your not paying for the room, your paying for the # of people.
Review 20:If you dont mind walking a little to get to the Pension, it is located in a nice mountain valley.
Review 21:Nothing
Review 22:The Pension is perfectly situated on the slopes of Blumental above Murren. The staff are very helpful and provide excellent meals. The inside is finished in typical Swiss rustic design and makes for a pleasant stay.
Review 23:Staff was a mixed bag. They were a mix of very friendly to annoyed if asked for anything. Overall, I did not feel welcomed, just accommodated. Room wasn't as advertised in the pictures... no desk, one small window, and slanted roof so I could only stand up straight in the middle of the room. I think the other single might be better. Room carpet smelled like feet. I'd leave the window open all day which helped a bit, but when I was stuck inside one very rainy afternoon, it wasn't very nice. Showers and toilet are on another floor.
Review 24:The location is amazing as it is at the heart of most of the hiking trails in the area and the view (from the front, i.e. double rooms) is amazing. When I got this place confused with another and thus brought my own food thinking they had a kitchen to use, they accommodated me by cooking the food I brought for a fee (nominal in terms of location, etc.) The room's heater was available even though it was summer (not the case in a more expensive hotel I used later) The price compared to everything else in the area is pretty good. I think the dorms are pretty overpriced at only $15 less per night than the single, considering you don't even get your own bed Quiet at night. Good breakfast, though eggs would be nice. Apparently, they'll make them on Sunday, if you ask, but only grudgingly.
Review 25:It was way to far and up a huge long hill that I wouldn't recommend.
Review 26:It was a cute place. Had friendly staff. It was really close to trails which was nice.
Review 27:Pillows were VERY miniscule. Bring earplugs! (I did, and noise was not an issue.)
Review 28:What a wonderful treasure! The views!!! The staff were all very professional, friendly and eager to help answer questions. I did not arrive until 10pm, and the staff were still very accommodating. I stayed in one of the big dorm rooms. All of the other travelers were very nice and respectful. The breakfast in the morning was fantastic. It featured a number of baked goods, cereals, yogurt, cheeses. My favorite was the freshly-baked, still-warm loaf of bread. I ate multiple slices with different homemade jams and cured meats. I took my breakfast on the outdoor terrace with a view of the mountains. The young man who managed the breakfast was very attentive with the coffee service, and he answered all of my questions about hiking in the area. I will echo other reviews, which mention the steep nature of the ascent to this location. That said, I did it in the dark and was well rewarded in the morning to waking up in an alpine paradise.
Review 29:We really didn't dislike anything. This is just a warning that the walk from Mürren is a very steep uphill - about 250 meters elevation in less than 1km. Easiest to take the Allmendhubel funicular to the top and do an easy 10 minute walk downhill. However, hours of operation for the funicular are limited (something like 9:00-17:30 when we were there in July), so if you want to have dinner outside the pension, you will have to do the uphill walk. It is not an easy walk (we did it with our carry-on bags when we first got there because 1.2km from the station sounded like a very manageable walk), but we have no complaints!
Review 30:Opening the windows to hear cows mooing as they grazed in the hills, their bells clanging occasionally. Clean and comfortable rooms, clean bathrooms. Good, simple breakfast, with plenty of coffee. Great views and the double rooms have cute little balconies. Helpful and kind staff. Would love to be back in winter, as you can ski right out of the pension onto a slope.
Review 31:Very peaceful setting with absolutely stunning views! Accommodations were very comfortable. The staff were very friendly and provided outstanding service! We enjoyed the food at breakfast and dinner as well as the beer, wine and ice cream!. We highly recommend Pension Sonnenberg for a quiet, peaceful vacation away from the crowds.
Review 32:Wonderful place to stay in the mountains! Very clean and well cared for pension. Love the double room with balcony; bathrooms and shower facilities down the hall are spotlessly clean. Excellent food. All the staff are very attentive and helpful. This was our 2nd time to stay at the Sonnenberg and we look forward to the next time we can visit.
Review 33:with a suitcase, u have to take the funicular (running time 9am~5pm), followed by a walking on pebbles for 20 minutes; itching blankets without cover
Review 34:striking view of meadow and snow mountain in front of hotel, isolated from the world;
Review 35:No suitcase. Far from the Murren station.
Review 36:Everything!! Calm and clean. Great landscape.
Review 37:location
Review 38:Great magical location....great for hiking!
Review 39:Location is super !! They offer very tasty and plentiful dish (lunch-dinner) for cheaper price than other 'touristy' restaurants.
Review 40:Had to walk. Was up a steep hill and a hot day. Breakfast was very minimal. Meals were very expensive.
Review 41:Great location and view. Facilities were nice.
Review 42:Strange shower arrangments - 2 shower in one room - no problem for us as pension was not fully booke
Review 43:Friendly staff, good breakfast
Review 44:The place. Beautiful way to go there. Nobody around
Review 45:Staff was very helpful and responsive Rooms clean
Review 46:the conditions in Mixed Dormitory Room is not bad for the price. Cause it deep in Murren, it takes some time to get there.
Review 47:only one charging place in the room for many people
Review 48:the location and the breakfast
Review 49:far from station but i liked that
Review 50:the way to pension sonnenberg was really nice for us mountain view was perfect and village view was so good
Review 51:Nothing worth mentioning.
Review 52:The location could not be bettered - fantastic views! The staff were great. Lots of lovely, well signposted walks nearby.
Review 53:No food prep area (they did their best) Directions to place inadequate No sheets on beds in dorms with wool blankets and tiny pillows. Expensive for that lack of comfort and basic hygiene. Would be fine if you brought personal sheets.
Review 54:Friendly Help Had dorm to myself Incredible Unbelievable Location
Review 55:The place is located up hills take over 45 minutes walking. Very inconvenient to get there for non-hiker. Need to take a taxi costs 10 Franc per person to get to the train station. There are a lot of flies all over the places.
Review 56:For the atmosphere and view it worths to walk up. Staying in the mountain with good signal wifi. Awsome breakfast.
Review 57:Accessibility was an issue as we were traveling with infant and has to walk long way to reach the hotel
Review 58:Location and service was excellent View was very good
Review 59:After reading previous reviews about the location in relation to Murren I now understand what they meant about being a trek to get to. We walked from the train station and it took us about 30 minutes. The steep hills and long distance were inconvenient but the reward was well worth the extra effort.
Review 60:The views and location of this accommodation were spectacular! My partner put on her boots and skis right outside the Pension to start her skiing day which was really convenient. The complimentary breakfast included a good variety and there was more food than we could finish. I would strongly recommend Pension Sonnenberg for a relaxing get away with stunning views.
Review 61:That we spent just one night there.
Review 62:Perfect location as the last chalet in Murren with all the necessary facilities, near the slopes, with a breathtaking view over the Alps from the room balcony and as sitting outside to take the breakfast. Very comfortable room and clean shared bathroom with a lavabo in the room. The staff was helpful and the continental breakfast included Swiss cheese and salami.
Review 63:Very difficult to get to! Walking to hotel from train station not possible with luggage. Taxi only option and very expensive. Other option was funicular but last one out of Murren at 5pm. This meant you couldn't site-see late or enjoy Murren in the evenings. Had to use restaurant at Pension. No comfortable lounge to relax with drink so evenings spent in room. Considering cost of funicular and taxi would have been cheaper to stay in hotel in Murren itself. Breakfast ok but not very inspiring.
Review 64:Beautiful setting in the mountains and staff friendly and helpful. Communal bathrooms clean.
Review 65:Shared bathroom, but we knew it going in, so no complaints.
Review 66:It was such a beautiful location and the rooms though small we'rehomey. The staff was amazing and helpful. The food was excellent.
Review 67:What's not to like? Did I mention the view?
Review 68:We walked into our bedroom and opened our window to see the Jungfraualmost close enough to touch. Wow! The Sonnenberg is set in a beautifulalpine meadow above Murren; it's a walker's paradise! The teamof 4 who run it couldn't be more helpful and liked the menu so muchwe ate there every night.
Review 69:Very well run accommodation; impressively attentive staff (eg afterchecking-in we popped down for a tea and coffee after a hardday's walking and before we had even sat down our order had beentaken and a blanket had been placed on the bench upon which we wereto sit) but never overbearing. The ice cream for dessert was verymoreish! Showers excellent
Review 70:We have been to the Sonnenberg many times as a stop for lunch on our hikes in this valley, but this was the first time to stay in the Pension. The Sonnenberg is under new management by 4 very motivated young professionals who made our stay very pleasant. We had a double room with a balcony and loved it! Great location for hiking this side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley above Murren. Very clean. The staff were friendly and pleasant to visit with. Excellent experience in the Sonnenberg Restaurant for breakfast and dinner! We will definitely be back!
Review 71:Location is best for skiers, not people walking/hiking. It is atough hike up to the pension from Mürren. Would recommend looking forsomething in Mürren.
Review 72:Very friendly staff
Review 73:The location was wonderful and the staff were extremely friendly. I enjoyed my stay very, very much.
Review 74:Wonderful setting high above Murren. Rooms were clean and comfortable Owners are wonderful, friendly
Review 75:the exorbitant price of the taxi to get up there
Review 76:The breathtaking views, the friendly staff, the cleanliness
The Fine Print
