Reviews for Hotel Alpina

Review 1:No complaints, we loved this place.

Review 2:What a great place! A small family run hotel with an amazing view. Just a short walk from the train station. Staff was friendly and competent. Hotel restaurant had beautiful view and delicious food, including the best burger I have ever had outside of USA. Rooms are simple and dorm like but view alone is worth the price.

Review 3:Single room is really very small...

Review 4:It was the 2nd time I stayed in this hotel. The view from the balcony was excellent no matter it's mountain view or street view. You'll have different experiences. Every staff in the hotel was friendly and nice although they are very busy. Food from the hotel restaurant is also nice.

Review 5:Amazing location, spectacular views and personal service sum up our experience at Hotel Alpina. Upon our arrival, we were greeted by the owners who informed us that they had made some special food purchases to accommodate our specific dietary needs. This was unexpected and much appreciated. The breakfast, included with the room, was hearty and delicious: a selection of meats and cheeses, yogurt, breads, jams, boiled eggs, coffee, juice and fresh milk. We also chose to eat dinner at the hotel each night. The owners reserved a table for us each night with our favorite mountain view. All the food was farm fresh and delicious. Prices are a bit steep but not out of range for the quality and quantity of food served. On the whole Switzerland is more expensive than the neighboring countries. The rooms have a refrigerator so you could save some money by picking up food items at the nearby grocery store, but I don't recall a microwave. We could not have asked for a more picturesque location. It was like a page out of Heidi. Our balcony looked straight at the mountains. At night we enjoyed beautiful stars and the lights of the valley below. The hotel seemingly hangs on the edge of the mountain with complete unobstructed beautiful views. Rooms on the other side of the hotel look out over the quaint main street of Murren. We definitely want to go back and spend more time in the Berner Oberland. Hotel Alpina will be our first choice for accommodations. Everyone was very, very helpful and thoughtful.

Review 6:We were very disappointed to be charged a booking fee for each of the four days we stayed at Alpina. The hotel said we should have booked direct if we wanted the price that was quoted. The other hotels we stayed at during our trip kept true to the euro quote we got from booking.com

Review 7:Good basic hotel with rooms that face the mountains - spectacular views - (ask for these rooms, the extra cost is worth it). Breakfast was good and the staff pleasant and helpful. Our room on level 2 was simple and clean. We enjoyed having the balcony doors open at night as it was very quiet while we were in Murren. Free WiFi worked well in our room. The hotel is within easy and flat level walking distance from train station. Staying in Murren was the highlight of our trip. Stayed Sept 2015

Review 8:Some of the staff were very helpful, some not. This hotel is not handicap accessible.

Review 9:You cannot beat the view from this hotel. You know that you're in the Alps.

Review 10:A booking.com service charge was added to our bill. At the same time I was advised to book directly with the hotel next time to avoid this fee. I've complained that this is not proper practice, but the staff member insisted that this fee comes from booking.com. He even claimed it is common practice around the world, which I know is not true, as I regularly book with booking.com. On top of this scam breakfast was poor and the entrance and corridors smelled of old wet carpet.

Review 11:The view is beautiful. The room was tiny, but okay value for money.

Review 12:The only unpleasant experience was the young man who is a waiter in the restaurant. When we told him what we wanted to order for a late evening snack, he began to pressure us strongly to order more. Basically, he demanded we order what he recommended. He was overbearing and rude. Maybe he had a bad day, but that wouldn't be an excuse. We had a bad day, including spending four hours on the roadside due to a blown out tire, but we were a lot more friendly and pleasant than he was! Sad, that he had to create a bad memory from what should have been so great an experience!

Review 13:Comfortable, clean, homey, but just average-level accomodation. You're paying for the location, and the location is stunning in every direction! Very nice staff (with one exception) and pleasant experience. Would return or recommend to a friend.

Review 14:Breathtaking vistas overlooking Lauterbrennan valley and the Jungfrau's peaks. Recently remodeled. Good restaurant with awe-inspiring view. Great, friendly staff. Close to Tram to Schilthorn. Will return.

Review 15:Nothing!

Review 16:Everything! The staff was excellent. Our first morning we came down after breakfast service was over and they brought back out the food for us. Extremely friendly and helpful!

Review 17:no elevator-3 flights of stairs with backpacks and suitcases-but would still stay there again!

Review 18:Beautiful, friendly staff, great food, family owned and managed!

Review 19:The plug sockets in our room did not fit our english travel adaptor plugs. Not a criticism of the hotel as such, but wanted other travellers to be aware.

Review 20:Views to the Eiger are amazing, and we had a balcony to sit and admire the view. We were given a corner suite, which had 2 rooms, both had a TV and sink facilities in addition to the separate bathroom/toilet. Murren is a very quiet place, you go for the views not the nightlife here! Great chef, food delicious, and the restaurant overlooks the Eiger. Was quite an experience to stay here.

Review 21:Our room was a little warm but nothing that upset our trip

Review 22:The staff was lovely, the view was out of this world, and they were very accommodating with our baby. They had cribs for the room and a high chair in the restaurant. The railings on the balcony are older so kids should be well monitored when out on them.

Review 23:We loved our stay here so much that we decided to stay one more night. The location is fantastic with a such a breathtaking mountain view. Our room was on the 3rd floor. The breakfast was something I was looking forward to every day. The people are very friendly. We have tried their restaurant for dinner and the Rosti I had, was the best I ever tried.

Review 24:The 2 interconnected rooms were perfect for two couples traveling together! We had our own privacy and space, yet could still be together. The Hotel was very clean and comfortable and had incredible views. I would definitely stay here again!

Review 25:Wifi was 1 from 10. We checked in in a first room, signal was zero. We asked to move us to another room, wifi was better there, which means you walk around the room to get a good signal and then it disappears. If you want to have a good connection you have to go to the restaurant on the ground floor.

Review 26:We had a mountain view room, I liked very much, breathtaking) location, room itself were very good, easy walk from train station, hot water to get warm in the shower.

Review 27:Depending on courtesy of other guest,s deck can be a little noisy when you are out enjoying the view (minor issue really).

Review 28:Incredible location and view, friendly/helpful staff.

Review 29:For us South Africans it was very expensive, considering the exchange rate. The flowers were disappointing this time, not as many as previous years.

Review 30:/within comfortable walking distance from train station, situated in the main road, lots of shops and restaurants. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Beautiful town.

Review 31:The pillows are lumpy and uncomfortable but the mattress was great. Restaurant food was just ok. Noisy from room above.

Review 32:Great staff. Roger is a wealth of information about hikes and recommended some very good ones to us. Very close to the train station. Amazing views from rooms on mountain side and from restaurant. The hiking possibilities are endless from Murren.

Review 33:Everything was perfect.

Review 34:This hotel was much nicer than we expected - the photos don't do it justice. The room was simple but cosy, very clean, nice facilities, and a balcony. Breakfast was great. The staff were very kind and friendly and gave lots of tips and information about local hikes and the scenic spots in the area. The owners child was a similar age to my son and they offered his pram, and his toys in case our son needed anything which was very kind.' The hotel was a short 5 minute walk from the cable car station, and very easy to find. There is a restaurant in the hotel and in all of the local hotels, and also one independent restaurant which we really enjoyed called Staeger Stuebli - all within walking distance (the town is very small). The cable car to Schilthorn is also only 5 minutes walk, and there is an easy walking trail for families with children, and lots of more difficult hikes in the area too. Its simply a fantastic place to stay in a very beautiful part of Switzerland. We would love to return.

Review 35:Bed was not very comfortable and breakfast was poor, full of sugary cereals and processed meats, and lacking in healthy choices like fruits and vegetables.

Review 36:Excellent location, wonderful views. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Review 37:The breakfast is a bit underwhelming.

Review 38:Location is amazing. It is a pretty basic place, but the whole point of staying here is to be outside and not spending time in the hotel.

Review 39:Very little to complain about! Breakfast room design was a bit sterile; could use some Swiss mountain styling

Review 40:Great location, and amazing view if you get a mountain-facing room. Nice staff. Would gladly return

Review 41:Virtually nothing

Review 42:This is a fantastic hotel with very friendly staff, and jawdroppingly amazing views. We had a room facing the mountains and when we weren't hiking we sat an watched the paragliders float by. It truly is an amazing view.

Review 43:I had a single room, which was tiny, with a narrow single bed with one hard pillow. The cramped bathroom's door was close to the head of the bed. Dingy threadbare towels and sheets

Review 44:My room had a balcony with an extraordinary view; a soaring range of snowy mountains above, and a dizzying drop to a valley hundreds of meters below

Review 45:The staff was super friendly and the view and location could not have been any better. Right at the edge of the cliff overlooking the valley below. Stunning view of jungfrau, monch, eiger and only a couple minutes away from the train station. The best in murren.

Review 46:There are no elevators.

Review 47:The staff at this small, family-owned hotel was extremely friendly and helpful. Our room was comfortable and immaculately clean with a nice view of the quaint village, and we could see the alps in the distance. The hotel is just a short 5 minute walk to the train station, and is close to all activities. We were so happy we chose Alpina!

Review 48:Could do with a redecorate. But it was very clean and tidy I must add

Review 49:The owner was really pleasant, nothing was too much trouble and more importantly it was genuine

Review 50:The breakfast fruit selection was only apples. Otherwise, good.

Review 51:The view from our room was incredible! Room was small but well laid out, breakfast was good. Wished we could stay longer!!

Review 52:The double beds are two single beds together, but that was as advertised, so not really a problem.

Review 53:Location! Location! Location! 2 minute walk from the Murren BLM and restaurants and town centre. Amazing views from the balcony. The staff were very welcoming. Other facilities were functional and sufficient.

Review 54:Bathroom without a bathtub. Bathroom is too small. Room is a bit small bit enough spare for 2 large luggage.

Review 55:The balcony of my room directly facing to the Jungfrau, Elgor, Monch. Can enjoy the sunset and sunrise on the balcony!

Review 56:It's pricey, but then everything in this era is pricey. You just have to grin and bear it.

Review 57:The staff was warm and welcoming...when we checked in, we were upgraded to a room with a balcony and mountain view. Wow! The hotel is perched on the edge of a dramatic vista of alpine mountains. A once in a lifetime place to visit. Breakfast was good and pentdiufl, th room was super clean and the bed was comfy.

Review 58:The desk person told us we could walk down to Gimmelwald and ride backup on the same ticket we had just come up with. But since we had alreadycome up once that day, we had to pay to come up again. It's quite aways to pull luggage to get to the hotel. Not hard for us but difficultfor one member of our party. Some hotels shuttle luggage down themountain.....this one does not. Also, it is quite expensive. All ofSwitzerland is high priced and this is no exception. Get food from thegrocery store and it is is much cheaper.

Review 59:We had a wonderful room with a balcony. Breakfast was ok. Very quiet.Wish we could have stayed longer.

Review 60:We were asked to pay CHF2.50 for a jug of hot water from one of the staff on duty. In the Lucern hotel before this, we had boiling hot water for free. No lifts in the hotel. We had to carry our heavy luggage up 2 flights of stairs.

Review 61:The view of the mountains from the hotel is breathtaking. Having breakfast with the mountains almost next to you is a once in a lifetime experience

Review 62:Friendly staff, great location close to the Murren BLM station. Balconies are facing mountains and have a very good view of Monch, Jungfrau and Eiger.

Review 63:Absolutely beautiful location overlooking the mountains. Wonderful hiking trails nearby (definitely stop by the panoramic view). You can watch paragliders from your window. Wonderful restaurant downstairs, a little pricey but not too bad, and the food was delicious.

Review 64:Transportation to any other location is super pricey. If you're fit you can hoof or bike it. We went to the schilthorn one day and Back and forth to Lauterbrunnen for day trips. Each roundtrip via rail and gondola was about 25 CHF.

Review 65:Comfy beds and clean bathroom. Excellent restaurant with wonderful free breakfast.

Review 66:We had a suite with a room facing the mountains and another facing the town and a room with a shower/toilet in between. The view of the mountains was like nothing I've ever seen before. Murren was the highlight of our trip to Europe, including the teenagers. The hotel is a little dated and the rooms aren't fancy, but it was clean, serviceable, and warm. We liked having the sinks in our rooms so nobody monopolized the bathroom. And the view was like nothing I've ever seen before. Fabulous panorama of the mountain range. Sunset was spectacular. The location was great too. The town is not big, but the hotel was very close to the train station.

Review 67:Building just tired and dated. Way too much cigarette smoking! Who goes to the clean, fresh mountain air then pollutes everything with cigarettes?!

Review 68:Great views from mountain side of hotel! Staff awesome.

Review 69:The room is a little bit too small. Breakfast is little disappointing.

Review 70:Perfect location with amazing mountain view. Nice and helpful staff. Btw try the Airtime paragliding in Murren! It's a lifetime experience you will never forget.

Review 71:Roger is the coolest guy out there and he will guide you with all the amneties of the hotel and the place. Good views of the mountain range. I bet you will fall in love.

Review 72:The pillows need to be replaced and were a little worn, (a small complaint) but everything else was wonderful.

Review 73:Best fantastic view from our balcony; Rhubarb pie I've had in a very long time!

Review 74:The hotel itself was very basic. Room was small and a bit smelly. Breakfast was meagre.

Review 75:Balcony overlooking the white Alps range and the green valley down below was mesmerizing. The whole town of Murren where it is located inspires awe with its mountains and valleys. Staff was cordial and wi-fi was okay.

Review 76:The bed was two twins put together so me and my fiancé had to separate ourselves. The beds only had blankets, no sheets. Kind of strange. So we had to keep the room cold enough to need them.

Review 77:The view was great except for some bad weather. Clean room.

Review 78:There really isn't anything we did not like about the hotel.

Review 79:The hotel is absolutely wonderful. The location could not be better.Murren is small enough that we were able to walk the town and see theviews from the other hotels and I could not find a hotel with a betterview. The staff was great! I hope to return one day.

Review 80:The only minor complaint is about the pillows on the bed being a little worn; not very firm ; (I was too tired and lazy to go ask for another, if I had, no doubt they would have replaced them for me!)

Review 81:Great quiet location. Staff always helpful and smiling. I'll be back in June

Review 82:Beds are hard and uncomfortable. Bathroom is very small, but nothing can be done about that.

Review 83:The view is unbelievable. The absolute best. Staff were very accommodating and friendly. Everything we asked for, we got. Breakfast, though not a hot, cooked breakfast, was very filling and varied.

Review 84:Staff is welcoming and friendly, place is clean and super comfortable. Breakfast was simple but nice with great service. Views are amazing, definitely get a mountain view room. No complaints whatsoever. Just amazing.

Review 85:Expensive, but everything, everywhere in Switzerland is! Very small room.

Review 86:Scenery, scenery, scenery! Fantastic little town but everything is expensive. Pretty much double what you pay in US or Canada. Great hot water!

Review 87:Located a short walk from the train station but a little longer to the main lifts. The hotel is situated virtually on the edge of the cliff affording a stunning view of the valley below. Very friendly staff and the food served is amazing.

Review 88:The Alpina is a very nice family runned hotel, the staff is friendly and accomodating, makes you feel like home. Rooms are nice and clean with stunning view from the balcony on the wonderful mountains! Peaceful and enjoyable!

Review 89:The beds were too soft for my like but besides that minor detail, the rooms were clean, smelled nice and the staff is always super welcoming.

Review 90:Slpe did views from the hotel's dinning room. I booked too late to Réserve a room with a view, but if you have the option when booking, I'd recommend getting the room with a view.

Review 91:Great location, Spectacular views of the Valley and mountains! Check-in process was easy.friendly, Roger made us feel very welcome and provided information on the town/village and offerings. Will definitely be back!

Review 92:Nothing.

Review 93:Roger, the owner of the hotel, was very pleasant and helpful. We arrived early but he let us checked in anyway. The mountain view from our room was breathtaking. The location from the train station is only about 300 meters away. We will definitely stay here again.

Review 94:Nothing

Review 95:Location is excellent, very close to the train station. The mountain view from the hotel room is spectacular. Staff are very friendly and helpfu. Clean and comfortable room. Breakfast is fantastic and delicious. I will definitely stay here again when I go back to Murren.

Review 96:We stayed there for 2 days and it was just fantastic! As soon as we opened the door to the balcony, we were astonished by the views of the alps in front of us! We would definitely stay there again!

Review 97:Loved, loved, loved this place. Homey away from home, staff were friendly, interactive and personable. Not elaborate but just what I was looking for in a relaxing get-away. Do yourself a favour and get a mountainview room. Totally worth it.

Review 98:Roger, the owner, didn't honor the discount referenced by Rick Steves in his book. We would not have found this hotel without the writer's help and kind words. Very disappointing.

Review 99:The balcony that hung over the abyss, facing the shear cliffs, with base jumpers sailing in front of us down to the Lauterbrunnen valley way, way below.

Review 100:Breakfast is unimpressive -- bulk yogurt, 2 sliced (similar) cheeses, some sliced meat (unappetizing looking), packaged spread cheeses, hard boiled eggs, some cereals, and two types of bread. Ran out quickly (don't be a straggler) and not replenished. Views are fine but not as expansive as I'd hoped. Basic and decent accommodations (good value) but also somewhat Spartan.

Review 101:Friendly staff, especially check-in staff. Clean, comfortable, no-frills room. Comfortable bed but insufficient extra pillows and blankets.

Review 102:Only complaint about the Alpina I could possibly make is that the WiFi in functional only in the lobby/lounge area. I feel they need to address that but otherwise a very good value.

Review 103:From the moment we arrived we felt at home. The woman that runs the hotel and her staff were very friendly and accommodating. The on-site restaurant was good and the patio was a nice place to have a beer and a snack. Easy and pleasant walk to either train or cable car station. Beautiful view of mountains. For a family of four we were given two connecting rooms at the end of the hall which worked perfectly. One of the best family hotels we had in Europe. Breakfast very nice.

Review 104:Bathroom smell like someone smoked inside. We had to ask for some air freshener...It helped a little. Old pillows with not much fluff... WI-FI was only downstairs.

Review 105:View was wonderful. Breakfast included and was fine. We met some other wonderful travelers!

Review 106:We had room 21 which has a spectacular view of the snow capped alps. Breakfast was typical european fare, sliced meats, hard boiled eggs, cereals, bread, fruit, coffee, but the service was excellent. The hotel is family run and they truly care about their guests.

Review 107:The whole lobby smelled bad when we entered and we nearly held our breath everytime we came in, the comforter was rough, despite being a couple we were given a room with a bunk bed in it, unable to determine how to regulate the room temperature, towels thin, unable to have cappucino with breakfast, coffee poor taste

Review 108:location, friendliness of breakfast staff, view from windows, closeness to train station, value for money

Review 109:We had to arrive very late at midnight but it was no problem. The room was comfortable with great beds and fantastic duvets. We loved curling up in them and leaving the French doors to the large balcony ajar for night air. Then ...... There is the view!! The most spectacular, unobstructed view of the Jungfrau, the Monch and the Eiger anywhere! And it changes minute to minute with clouds moving through, para gliders in the valley below sun peeking over the tops. Scenic Overload! The food is excellent in a restaurant with an even wider view and is expertly served by Louis who is warm and friendly. The proprietor is also very friendly and speaks several languages. You will be understood here. We hope to return and bring family next trip! Definitely recommend this simple but fabulous little gem! So glad we found it!

Review 110:Not a lot of variety in the breakfast selection, and it was the same every single day which gets tiring after 4 days.

Review 111:The staff was very friendly and helpful. Our room had a beautiful view of the Alps.

Review 112:Our room with the gorgeous balcony view. Delicious breakfast. Friendly staff and very helpful. The entire visit was wonderful and we did not want to leave

Review 113:The only drawback which would be true for many hotels with balcony's, was guests smoking on their porches day or night. My husband and I love to keep our windows open as we love fresh air, but we had to close them often when guests below or on either side "lit up"!

Review 114:Staff was great, food delicious, scenery to die for! This is our 4th stay here in 20 years and we've never been disappointed!

Review 115:Room was quite small with poor ventilation, but that was not a big issue for us, because we were in Murren for hiking, not food staying in hotel.

Review 116:Breakfast was great. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and spoke good english. Hotel's restaurant is good, and if you want some tasty alternative, the chinese close to Alpina is worth to visit and open almost always.

Review 117:One thing to note - there is no elevator or lift in this hotel. If you have heavy bags or any joint issues with knees, etc. you definitely should get a room on a lower floor. We were on the 4th floor, and it was alright, but a good workout over and over again coming downstairs to check email in the common area, coming for breakfast, etc.

Review 118:The Alpina was such a pleasure to stay in! It was located so close to the train station - just minutes away. Be sure to ask for a room with a mountain view - that would be the reason that this hotel would get whopping reviews. This view is unbeatable. From the balcony and from our beds the Eiger & Monch just towered there across the Lauterbrunnen Valley. Totally majestic. The staff very helpful. Breakfast was lovely each morning - a good selection and again, the unbeatable view every morning. This place is the best!

Review 119:Very nice staff, very clean, room had a lovely balcony overlooking the mountains. Cure (and little) single room that had everything I needed and more: bathroom, hairdryer, soap in the shower, balcony overlooking the mountains. Would definitely come back.

Review 120:No complaints really- first time visitors might find Murren isolated but this is the charm of the village and the walks and scenery are wonderful.

Review 121:The location is amazing perched high on the cliff edge with spectacular mountain views. What brings me back to this hotel is the friendly wonderful staff who make you welcome and at home. The restaurant and breakfast service are good.

Review 122:WIFI only in lounge. It's 2014: get a router on every floor please!

Review 123:Location is terrific! A very short walk from the train. Staff very friendly and good breakfast. Our corner room while small, had a great balcony and views to die for. Good closet space for unpacking and clothes hooks for coats made efficient use of limited space. The restaurant was surprisingly good, although like the entire area, very expensive.

Review 124:old lady at front desk was nice and helpful. the young couple with kid who worked there were very rude. when we arrived with luggages, i would imagine they would make room for us to pass the narrow entrance since they blocked it with baby cart, but they didn't. and in another instance, i had to ask 3 times before the young lady finally lifted her head and told me to wait. no elevator, hard to carry heavy luggages if you stay at top floor.

Review 125:good location, close to train station. great view from restaurant. quiet at night.

Review 126:Hotel was dated and worn. I saw many other options there with equivalent views without having to be on the cliff. For the same price we could have been in a much nicer place. The beds didn't have top sheets - just a comforter which seemed unsanitary. There were no toiletries and room was very dated.

Review 127:The people were great. Breakfast was very good.

Review 128:we found the price versus the quality of food a bit disappointing. this was consistent with another restaurant in town. $21 for a hamburger is too much. even when we ordered a more complete meal ( $35) it was okay but not worth the price.

Review 129:the view was breathtaking. Staff were great. We would go back.

Review 130:Quite small bathroom/shower. Potential for noisy neighbours

Review 131:Amazing cliff edge location with great views. All staff friendly and accommodating. Good varied restauarant menu

The Fine Print

Mürren is a car-free town and can only be reached by train or cable car. Cars have to be parked at the valley station.
