Reviews for Coast Bastion Hotel
Review 1:For a similar price in North Van. (Pinnacle at the Pier) There are pay movies, a morning paper, and the evening dinner food is much better. (breakfast is good) You used to have these services... it is what sets you apart from a "mom and pop" motel. It looks as if someone is economizing in the wrong places.
Review 2:Staff, location, property in general... all excellent.
Review 3:Renovations, no restaurant and parking was a challenge on the evening I was there.
Review 4:People were very helpful and pleasant. Room was very clean and the view overlooking the harbour was fantastic.
Review 5:Although we could order room service to our room and there was free coffee in the morning It will be good when the restaurant is renovated.
Review 6:The concierge and the front desk staff were helpful, friendly and had a great sense of humour. Great downtown location with a great ocean view.
Review 7:The room leaked badly, carpet soaked.Hallways ,lobby, and elevator were filthy. No notice when reservation made that the only restaurant and lounge was closed.
Review 8:location
Review 9:At this time I miss the Minos Restaurant, but totally understand the circumstances. Looks forward to it's opening.
Review 10:Rooms and bed is very nice. I like that I can control the temperature in the room and that I have access to internet.
Review 11:No dining facilities due to flooding. Even breakfast only available in foyer or your room. We understand that this is a temporary situation. But they don't tell you in advance!!
Review 12:Location. Good local eating venues (fortunately).
Review 13:Restaurant was closed due to burst water pipe, but the hotel provided the same food as room service and provided some discount vouchers to compensate. Some parts of the hotel were being refurbished but this didn't affect us (may have been the cause of the burst pipe?).
Review 14:Location was close to the harbour and close to alot of restaurants. Staff were friendly and efficient.
Review 15:We thought to find a spa with sauna and swimming pool from the search criteria on booking however there is no pool nor sauna just massage facilities which closed early. Also the restaurant was closed and the breakfast was very poor
Review 16:Comfortable and big room. Very nice and clean bathroom. Close to ferry departure , 10 min driving
Review 17:There had been a problem with the restaurant and it was out of use. It would have been good to have had a swimming pool.
Review 18:Very good central location with great views over the harbour
Review 19:The internet service was poor in the room and kept dropping out.
Review 20:This hotel is right on the waterfront in Nanaimo , a beautiful spot on Vancouver Island. Its worth paying that bit extra fro a waterfront room for the sea views. With tourist features and great restaurants in walking distance you could not get a better location.
Review 21:Everything. The staff was extremely helpful. The room was lovely especially the ocean view. Very happy that you are using eco friendly products and made sure that we took home the used small bottles so they wouldn't be discarded. I look forward to my next visit in 2-3 years to look for a home as I plan to relocate to your beautiful city when I retire.
Review 22:Bathroom fan did not work. No fridge in room for medications. PLASTIC cups for coffee and tea. Hallway was dingy and unwelcoming.
Review 23:Room was very pleasant with a nice view. Comfortable bed.
Review 24:N/a
Review 25:Staff were really friendly & helpful & very accommodating when we had to unexpectedly extend our stay. Rooms & bathrooms were a good size and well appointed.
Review 26:Bathroom had a mild bad smell to it but the housekeeping dept did what they could to try to remedy it.
Review 27:Centrally located near the harbour, easy to walk to shops and restaurants downtown. Bed very comfortable. Room is a good size. Bathroom larger and eco friendly. Very attentive reception and housekeeping staff - excellent. Food in the restaurant on site, although pricey, is excellent.
Review 28:Nanaimo itself is pretty quiet. I was just there on my way somewhere else. Glad I didn't have too much time there
Review 29:Food in the restaurant was excellent
Review 30:The mattress we had was not very comfortable.
Review 31:The view was great! Staff were friendly and efficient. Room was very clean. Food (both room service and breakfast) - very good!
Review 32:Having to pay for parking -- it really added up over a 4 night stay. One side of the sliding door out to the balcony was so etched that you couldn't see out of it! There had been a very obvious repair to the ceiling which was really noticeable, not acceptable for a hotel of this calibre.
Review 33:The location was excellent. You are across the street from the harbour and can walk forever along the pathway. There are a number of restaurants within walking distance. Plenty of parking which would be excellent if it was free with your stay.
Review 34:Our room was on the corner of a busy intersection in downtown Nanaimo. You couldn't keep the window open at night because of the traffic sounds.
Review 35:The room and facility if very nice.
Review 36:Staff helpful and friendly. Made recommendations for dining at several restaurants and they were all excellent. Proximity to waterfront, marinas and dining was excellent.
Review 37:The beautiful corner suite we stayed in with a full view of the harbour! The king size bed was also wonderful. We had lunch in the restaurant and it was delicious. For sure, this was the nicest hotel we stayed in on our trip to the coast!
Review 38:just the evening meal in the restaurant
Review 39:Nice location - quiet air conditioner - nice courtyard for the kids - pool was good Restaurant was a bit of a disappointment. Was pricey and we were not allowed to sit by the windows - all of which were empty - due to reservation yet people walked in and sat there with no problem. We went elsewhere for breakfast
Review 40:Not having access to a free hot breakfast like many other hotels we've visited.
Review 41:The room was clean, beds comfortable and the view was awesome on the 9th floor!
Review 42:We didn't like having to pay extra for parking but appreciated the secure, convenient parking.
Review 43:We liked the central location and the ocean view with patio access to fresh air if we wanted it. The air system in the room was excellent. The room was also free of hotel noises.
Review 44:A lovely hotel with renovated comfortable and large rooms. We had a beautiful view of the harbor. The hotel is in the town of Nanaimo and there are great restaurants within walking distance
Review 45:The aircon system could have been better. It was either freezing or boiling and it turned off in the night meaning we woke in the early hours very uncomfortable
Review 46:The room was great, great location and view from balcony. There was a mix up with the room booked (twin beds instead of double) and the receptionist changed the room immediately without any further discussion. Very friendly and helpful staff. There was plenty of choice for breakfast which was very nice and quick.
Review 47:I really like the staff. They are very competent and clearly understand the needs and concerns of business travellers. When I told them I can't sleep well sometimes after a long day on the road, they made sure I got an extra serene room.
Review 48:Housekeeping missed several things in my room the first night, including leaving a half-used bottle of complimentary mouthwash and cleaning the shower poorly. The shower head provided weak pressure both nights. Also, although equipped for key card entry, the parking garage door into the hotel lobby was not secure.
Review 49:The view and location! The staff was also very friendly and helpful, and they provided a free upgrade for my second night upon hearing of the housekeeping misses my first night.
Review 50:It was very comfortable. It was also elegant. The staff were helpful and nice. The restaurant was great. Right after we checked in we were hungry. the waitress was sensitive to our needs. She was personable and helpful. We were tired from traveling and from an accident (a live power pole had fallen on our car while we were traveling). She was sensitive. We had just come in from the ferry.
Review 51:Parking was a little bit out of the way but at least there was parking.
Review 52:We went to the lounge for a snack and drinks. The bartender was super. Aleshia (something like that) was her name. She chatted with us and we ended up having her reserve a table in the restaurant for dinner. Dinner was good; the room extremely clean with a sea view and balcony window that opened. Nice place; we'd definitely stay there again.
Review 53:We stayed for 8 nights and the bar ran out of our beverages after acouple nights and it was several days before the Food and Beveragemanager reordered.Also... the last time we stayed there, a year ago, we were able to smoke on the 2nd floor patio but this year it was designated non-smoking. It's a shame that smokers have no area but out on the street to relax and have a puff. No bench, no table... NO ONE knows that this patio even exists so what's the big deal? At least with the patio, people can get away from the street vultures who hover over the street ashtray waiting for you to butt your smoke!! Nothing like having someone run up to the ashtray and start smoking your cig. before you even move away... Overly pet friendly. Not good for allergy sufferers as pets are allowed in all rooms!
Review 54:Most of the staff was very helpful and friendly. Our weekday maid andall servers and bartenders were fantastic!
Review 55:Would have liked a continental breakfast included. No fridge and the room could have been a little bigger.
Review 56:Easy walking to little cool area, close to ferry, clean and proper room with nice bedding, carpet and bathroom. Lovely, modern, fresh and comfortable.
Review 57:Room safe was locked when we arrived. On our second day, when leaving our room , we happened to check the door and it did not lock!! Was it this way the previous day too? Both of these problems were corrected immediately by staff. However, the door problem should never have happened. We would have appreciated a softer pillow on the bed, Otherwise, the room was very comfortable.
Review 58:Nothing really...
Review 59:We thought the staff were very friendly and genuine. When we asked about things to do in Nanaimo the staff were very engaged and eager to suggest options for us.
Review 60:Really nothing 'bad' at all; some minor things that could be changed like the lack of coffee cups except for cardboard ones, and the windows need to be replaced where there is condensation between them.
Review 61:The location, and the quality of the staff, are the highlights of this hotel. The size of the room is very comfortable; the view spectacular; the air conditioning essential and appreciated with 30+ degree weather.
Review 62:overcharged room, very upset. also mar ble coffee table was never cleaned, probably for a long time as when lit hit it you could see multiple drink rings. yuck!
Review 63:location.
Review 64:No free breakfast offered but expected for the fee paid
Review 65:Great location - not too far from ferry and walking distance to shops. Free WiFi was great to have and it was of good quality speed. Front desk staff pleasant and helpful
Review 66:My fiancé and I had a lovely view, comfortable bedding and spacious room accommodations. Staff were helpful in locating specific spots for food, entertainment, etc. Had a wonderful stay!
Review 67:There was no really bad experience other than the shower head falling off and then the pressure wash shower itself. I reported that to staff and I'm sure they rectified that. I never did get connected to the WiFi but it was only a short stay so no problem. As I recall I had the same problem the last time I stayed there.
Review 68:Cordial staff, great restaurant. We had a dozen people for dinner and the staff did a super job.
Review 69:Booked this hotel via internet. The internet name and the name on the building are a little confusing and the parking is a nightmare.
Review 70:The room was nice!
Review 71:Very noisy air conditioner! Unbelievable ! No swimming pool. Need to pay carpark fee.
Review 72:Excellent sea view! Nice and huge bedroom. Excellent breakfast with reasonable price!
Review 73:Hardly slept that night due to a party directly below us. Even with ear plugs in. Finally called the desk at 4:00 a.m. Thankfully it was rectified quickly.
Review 74:The staff were pleasant and accommodating.
Review 75:First two stays was given a room with great view over the Harbour. Thought that was standard for people staying three days. Not so room had a view of a wall...for three days, and I could hear the seaplanes take off.
Review 76:Good quality and cleanliness. Great friendly cleaning staff. I enjoyed.
Review 77:Staff was very friendly. The parking was easily accessible. The restaurant had great food, mind you it can be on the pricey side, but it was great food.
Review 78:The room was beautifully appointed with an extremely comfortable king bed. Everything in the room was spotlessly clean and the bathroom was equipped with everything you could need - including full size bottles of shampoo, conditioner etc.
Review 79:Lack of special considerations for the geriatric/handicapped. - e.g - no bath/shower rails - access towels requires bending down under the bathroom counter - difficult for many seniors.
Review 80:almost everything
Review 81:I booked on line it was a lot cheaper than when i got my bill I did not print the amount but it was around $600.00 ..so it was well over $100.00 difference, next time I will print off the reservation.
Review 82:the room was very nice the bed comfortable.. dinner was expensive but very good the bar was relaxing
Review 83:We were visiting family and were kept awake at night by banging doors and in the morning by the seaplanes/buses. Consider putting mature adults on the quiet side of hotel and the teams on the noisy side!
Review 84:The staff, view, cleanliness, food, and general experience were wonderful.
Review 85:I wsnt aware that there was any type of breakfast. Also, there was some University groups there so it got pretty loud and crazy a few times...And I thought that the pricing was just a little high for Nanaimo. It's fine if it's for special occasions but it's costly if you'd like to go there every time you come for visits. (Especially after you pay for the ferry etc to get there)
Review 86:The welcoming host was extremely helpful and friendly. The location is the best. It's walking distance to the seawall, historical sites, great restaurants, shopping, theatre... everything is within a few short blocks. And the views... they are spectacular. So peaceful! Thank you for such a great weekend.
Review 87:Early morning city truck traffic (a garbage truck and a large construction vehicle) woke me a few mornings as I enjoy sleeping with my window open. A downside to wanting to enjoy the fresh ocean air blowing into the room.
Review 88:Located just across from the seawall and the Old Town area provided great opportunities for morning walks and late afternoon browsing. There were plenty of cafe options to choose from for a daily coffee break snack and lunch to go. The hotel's lounge was a nice place to relax at the end of my day with a glass of wine and good food.
Review 89:Desk and plug in or computer was directly below the TV so could not watch while working. Desk top did not work with my mouse. I had to put a piece of paper on the desk to get my mouse to record.
Review 90:The bed was great. Bathroom was a great size - good lightiing.
Review 91:I was told that the next morning Dec 26, they could not get served for breakfast. Infact they went to the Dorchester for breakfast that day and Dec 27th. They decided to stay one more day
Review 92:The hotel was clean and in a good location. I had booked this for my children that came from out of town to visit at christmas and they loved the room.
Review 93:Halls felt old, felt claustrophobic. Had to go to another floor for ice, machine did not work on ours. If we opened sliding door the wind noise from under the room door was loud.
Review 94:Overall room, clean, comfortable.
Review 95:i made a mistake when registering the room. i meant to reserve the room for nov. 14 but instead made it for dec.14, there was no way to change the reservation or get a refund, i lost money. i did stay there in nov. but not in dec. i feel i was cheated
Review 96:Food prices were high in the hotel.
Review 97:The Coast is a great hotel in the heart of downtown. There is great shopping downtown as well as restaurants. Check ou Two Chefs Affair two blocks away for breakfast or lunch. Excellent food.
Review 98:The room next door was occupied by very noisy visitors. The hotel staff was notified and the problem was resolved for a short while. Unfortunately, the problem continued through the night. Fortunately for us, the next two nights were fine, since those visitors had were gone.
Review 99:The staff was friendly and very helpful. If there was any problem, they tried their BEST to help and resolve. The view was fabulous.
Review 100:Only complaint is the elevators which are slow (really slow) and perhaps possessed! I understand they are fixing them this winter.
Review 101:Ive always liked staying at this hotel when I'm in Nanaimo.
Review 102:There was nothing that we could find fault with. If pressed to find something, perhaps parking could be free to hotel guests and there could be a larger loading and unloading space, but this is just knitpicking. Our experience was sensational!
Review 103:We absolutely loved the view from 1411 and found the staff very friendly and helpful. Loved the birthday basket of Nanaimo bars abd fruit left in our room with a nice little note. The restaurant staff, service and food(dinner and breakfasts) were amazing. We loved being able to walk to cute little shops and around the pier and to the casino. We will definetely return each time we come to Nanaimo! The whole experience was special!
Review 104:Beds were somewhat small
Review 105:Staff were really friendly and helpful. Very nice bathroom, nicer than some other 4 star hotels we stayed in! Free wifi. Room was very clean with a nice tv. Good location right in front of the promenade
Review 106:The panoramic view of the harbour, we could have sat and watched all day. The float planes, ferries, water taxis, fishing boats, it's a bustling and gorgeous view. What a location.
Review 107:Rooms located right at busy intersection of two streets so noise level for sleeping not good. Older male desk clerks were curt, unhelpful and overworked. Twice we had to wait over 20 minutes just to be able to ask clerk a question as line was long with only one clerk
Review 108:Bed linens seemed a little dingy, some towels had faint older stains, some staff didn't smile once the whole time, staff a little too laid-back in their attention to customers (I know it's the island but more of an effort could be made).
Review 109:Excellent location, food pretty good, solid chain hotel, relatively quiet, has basic services, bed was comfortable. Some staff were very helpful and friendly. Recycling program.
Review 110:N/A
Review 111:We wanted a weekend get-away to Vancouver Island and booked into the Coast Bastion Hotel. From the moment we met the personable front desk lady, to the time we checked out on Monday, we thought the entire experience was very special. The coastal setting was perfect and the view from our room was quite lovely! The room was super, quite clean and the bed gave us 2 wonderful nights of sleep! Thanks so much!
Review 112:Very helpful reception staff. Rooms are large, clean, very comfortable and with a beautiful view. (Fantastic Fish and Chip cafe (nothing to do with hotel) in front of hotel on water's edge).
Review 113:Housekeeping wasn't over friendly. Asked for sink to be unplugged and change the sour smelling shower curtain. This wasn't done. I didn't spend a whole lot of time in my room, so I guess this didn't really matter. Still a tad annoying.
Review 114:Great location, front desk staff very friendly. thank you :)
Review 115:Only minor grumbles were checkin took a long time and new pillows were in order.
Review 116:We could walk everywhere from the hotel - to our friend's, the water, breakfast, dinner and shopping. Room service was prompt, good and value good. View of the water, big TV, nice bathroom and toiletries, plus comfy bed.
Review 117:Tried to book a room for my last night 4 days later and they wanted to charge me $40.00 more, would not match price because I booked through 3rd party.
Review 118:Centrally located, newly renovated
Review 119:Spent 2 nonconsecutive nights. First room much nicer than 2nd. The staff was excellent but above and beyond they could have booked same room for my return on the 1st night there
Review 120:The service in the restaurant was very slow during the evening, which was a shame as I would have been able to give the hotel 100%
Review 121:Hotel was friendly, spotless and comfortable. It is nestled in an ideal location for the ferry, sea planes, downtown attractions and for touring.
Review 122:Everything was good. The room is comfortable and clean, even the shower curtain smelled nice and fresh. The restaurant staff were very nice, too. We had a small issue when we were checking out but Derrik at the front desk quickly solved it for us. We really appreciated it. Definitely we will stay at this hotel again.
Review 123:The ocean view was a bit of a technicallity (not much of a view really) and there was a month in the toilet bowl when we first checked in that the housekeeping staff didn't flush away first.
Review 124:The location was great. Everything was in walking distance. Staff were pleasant and accomodating.
Review 125:Nothing
Review 126:Great position forwandering around the town and along the seafront. Easy underground parking with direct access to hotel. Great views from bedroom. Comfortable beds and friendly helpful staff. At breakfast we had limited time as we had to catch a ferry, the staff made our order a priority and told us exactly how long each item on the menu would take.
Review 127:Dining breakfast staff poor, attitude & did not deliver on service without 2 separate reminders that we were waiting for our breakfast, tea & coffee.
Review 128:Reception, staff genuinely friendly & most helpful
Review 129:No swimming pool
Review 130:The hotel is in the middle of the action in Nanaimo. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. The cleaning staff are excellent. The hotel dining room is very good. The view from the room was wonderful. We could walk to the boardwalk and ferry to Galiano Island.
Review 131:Hotel has three stars but deserves five. Among the best hotels we have ever stayed in. Rooms were immaculate, staff was helpful, great sleep, close to harbor
Review 132:Parking for oversized vehicles two blocks away. Restaurant on site needs more experienced servers. People kept waiting too long for tables.
Review 133:On site dinning, close to waterfront attractions and shops.
