Reviews for Excelsior
Review 1:The room had a wooden door to the next room (which was locked all the time) but because of that someone could be heard snoring at night.
Review 2:Good location: close to Gare Cornavin and city buses or trams stop just a few steps away. And you can easily go to many sights of interest on foot.
Review 3:Whilst the hotel was where it said it was the room we booked following the photos on the booking.com website prompt "book this room" was NOT at all as the photos showed and actually very disappointing since I had booked it as a surprise for my partner who met me there after a month apart - we chose to even eat breakfast out as we were not impressed with the breakfast room - overall very disappointing to our expectations Came across an electrician infringe of my window on the final morning when I was just getting out of the shower & had no clothes on
Review 4:Great location - price wise ok
Review 5:Always too noisy in the corridors starting from 8 in the morning - and this is well heard in the room and disturbing
Review 6:Nice location - the walking distance of 10-15 minutes from the centre and 2-3 minutes from the railway station
Review 7:Room had hard tile floor and only one small mat. It was cold on the feet. There was also no way to control (up or down) the heating in the room.
Review 8:Good location - quiet street
Review 9:N/A
Review 10:It was close to Railway Station and near to the lake. Public transport card very useful. Good nearby evening restaurant recommended by receptionist. Very adequate breakfast.
Review 11:No kettle and mugs/cups in room. Had to go down to take hot water. No ironing facilities in room, had to use ironing facilities in the ground floor.
Review 12:The location was great. Nearby a shopping mall and close to many Halal restaurants. Staffs are very friendly.
Review 13:Unreliable internet. Lacks a few small luxuries such as table lamp, comfy chair. Rooms are a bit too basic to spend a lot of time in them.
Review 14:Great location. Directly opposite Manor department store which has a great food hall. Staff are unfailingly excellent. Extremely clean - bravo the housekeepers! Free local transport card. Great character. Rooms are not luxurious but are perfect for a short business trip where you do not expect to spend a lot of time in the room.
Review 15:Extremely old hotel with outdated facilities, unsafe electronics inside rooms. Very old furniture, non working equipment and no elevator to the 6th floor.
Review 16:Location is epic, the crew is super friendly and helpful. Rooms are very clean overall.
Review 17:the road in front of the hotel is under construction and could be very disturbing in the early hours of the day; although it is a temporary situation.
Review 18:Location and cleanliness was perfect. staff is very helpful.
Review 19:Nothing much.
Review 20:Good staff and very friendly and responsive. Excellent location. Closed to the lake for sightseeing and train station for journey to other parts of Switzerland, and also near the stores for shopping and souvenirs.
Review 21:The wifi connection was awful. I also needed to iron my clothes and I was led to a dingy room with one iron for the whole hotel with a worn out ironing board.
Review 22:Staff was friendly; centrally located; clean.
Review 23:No internet for 24 hours, and still can not fix when I left Noisy hotel, you can hear whatever happen in the corridor...even one floor upstair or downstair
Review 24:Very friendly people and a great customer service at the hotel !!! Easy access to the train and bus station, walking distance to everything what is the most important in Geneva, eat and drink out, walking, sightseeing etc... !!!
Review 25:Staff who checked us in was a bit abrupt and cold but put this down to the fact we arrived at the hotel at midnight.
Review 26:Extremely central (literally round the corner from Gare Cornavin ) Very clean rooms
Review 27:Every evening there was a noise in the hotel caused by an operating machine. One day the staff claimed it was not hotel's fault, the other that it was the hotel air-conditioning. Anyways, after asking they always managed to turn it off somehow. The rooms in this hotel are very basic, so the price of around 140 franks per night, breakfast NOT included, is much too much. However, overpricing is a general problem in Geneva. Cry, pay and stay...
Review 28:Close to the train station. Polite staff.
Review 29:Just don't expect anything fancy. This is no place for honeymoons. Wi-Fi is free but was so slow, that I quickly gave up on it.
Review 30:Rooms are small but clean and neat, hotel has basic services. It's just a place to sleep but well located and, above all, very affordable in a neighborhood that is not.
Review 31:small room, outdated furniture. In general, this hotel needs a facelift. expensive for what you get, but then again, Geneve is a very expensive city.
Review 32:location close to the central station. hotel travel card for free local transport during the stay, valid also for Geneve airport train.
Review 33:Tables are only cleaned with the hand after breakfast. Never seen a cleaning rag... --> disgusting The unmotivated waitress never said more than "what is your room number, please?" at breakfast. Greeting? Skipped... Two persons booked, but only towels, etc. for one person in the room. But fixed after complaining. Prices aren't comprehensible and vary instead.
Review 34:Only the really nice and huge walk-in wardrobe...
Review 35:My room was too hot - I slept with window open but was still hot. I would have liked more electric sockets (for appliances). I would have liked a desk lamp. It would also have been nice to have an easy chair.
Review 36:Very well located for Gare Cournavain and centre. My room was extremely clean and brilliantly well cleaned every day. Public areas also spotless. Rooms are basic and functional but very nice nonetheless and perfectly good for a business trip where you do not expect to spend a lot of time relaxing in your room. All the staff I encountered were absolutely wonderful. I can't speak highly enough of them. I would definitely recommend it.
Review 37:It exceeded my expectations for a 3 star hotel. Simple but tasteful decoration, adequate sized rooms and location close to train station, tram centre made it easy to travel to tourist sites along the lake and in the city. A 5 minute walk to tourist bureau, the lake and main upmarket shopping street for those interested..
Review 38:It is well located, very close to the train station , one block from the bus station to the airport and downtown , and also it is nice if you can walk to downtown from the hotel is very close.
Review 39:I had a room on the road side (facing Manor store) . This was subject to some noise even with the windows and shutters closed. In addition, when I was there there were road works on Rue Rousseau that started at about 6.30 am - not a major issue for me as I had to be up by that time anyway but no good if you fancied a lie in.
Review 40:Clean, central (less than 5 mins to main station and restaurants), helpful staff.
Review 41:The tiniest room I've ever lived in. If it was for more than 1 night, might be inconvenient. But the hotel is honest - sq meters were in room description
Review 42:Very convenient location in the center, and not noisy. Staff friendly and polite. Good breakfast.
Review 43:The facilities need a little renovation. I understand the mood of the hotel is classic but the I terrors were too old fashion. Didn't like the traditional key either I prefer card keys.
Review 44:I loved the location and the easy access to public transport.
Review 45:Breakfast was not so good. There is no too much variety.
Review 46:It is located just at two blocks from the train station. Really close of the city center and with excelent public transport service
Review 47:Road work in front of hotel made finding it VERY difficult. Streets narrow & congested. I had to park in garage a block away & carry all bags.
Review 48:Staff was helpful. Room was clean.
Review 49:I had a single room which was tiny! It had room for one short single bed and a very small desk...that's it! Shower was small a cramped for a big person.
Review 50:Breakfast was good! Delicious breads, cheese, fruit and coffee!! Front desk personnel were always friendly.
Review 51:Where to start, really? The staff were just OK, a bit snooty but all over people who had been daft enough to pay full price that included breakfast! I had booked a room overlooking the courtyard for quietness but they were putting scaffolding up next door - so that was not a good start. There was no A/C and the room was stifling, one small fan, one socket by a table next to the bed that already had a large phone on, so was forced to put it on the floor and walk round it and could not leave it on at night. When I asked about the A/C, I was told that the building was very, very old and it could not be done. It was built in 1948, less than two years before I was born so I began to feel somewhat decrepid at that point!! No tea/coffee facilities in room. Coffee machine by the reception desk that you had to pay 2Sf. to use. It did seem reasonably clean. OK, by Geneva standards, I probably did not pay a huge amount but a bit of tact and diplomacy and ventilation would not have come amiss. I will not be returning, you might be surprised to know!?
Review 52:Not the hotel itself but it is convenient for the train station, the Lake and other points of interest - including Manor - the 'Only Department Store in Geneva' which was less than two minutes walk and worth a visit!
Review 53:We went start of august it was very hot outside and the room didn't have aircon just a table fan so sleeping was a bit uncomfortable.
Review 54:Great location, near train station, shops, restaurants and the lake. Multi-lingual staff who were very helpful. Room was decent size with nice bathroom and walk-in clothes storage area.
Review 55:Wi-Fi did not really work. There was not an air-conditioning and an electric kettle. The breakfast finished soon, if we had been late, we would not have got scrambled eggs and tea.
Review 56:Located very close to the railway station and not far from the centre. The bedroom was clean and the receptionist was very welcoming. We were given the transportation cards and a map of city with recommendations where to go.
Review 57:Great location within walking distance of the train station, the town center, old-town and the lake. Free access to public transit was provided with our stay. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Review 58:Very bad wifi connection throughout hotel. Staff were not very helpful, asked for directions to a restaurant they recommended, directions were vague and not correct.
Review 59:Good breakfast. Easy walking to town centre and train station.
Review 60:The room was way too hot. There was no air conditioning, and even with the fan blasting, the temperature in the room ended up getting to be 35 degrees Celsius. It felt like a sauna which made it very hard to sleep.
Review 61:The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The room was clean and it had everything I needed. I liked that there was a grocery store right across the street. It made it easy for a solo traveller like me to pick up food and eat alone instead of having to go to a restaurant.
Review 62:A bit expensive as everything in Geneve, no air conditioning
Review 63:Excellent location with access to central transport connections, kind staff, good breakfast, hotel provides a public transport free ticket for the period of stay
Review 64:woman staff not much friendly.I stay during summer the weather is hot. I open window but no filter to protect insect.Hotel should provide fan for guest. no elevator.
Review 65:location&variety of breakfast&staff can provide necessary info and guide to explore the city
Review 66:What I did not have like about the hotel room is that it does not have any air conditioner unit and adequate electrical sockets outlets.
Review 67:What I like the most of my stayed was the friendliness and helpfulness of the reception staff and also the close proximity of its location to the train station.
Review 68:No air conditioning while it was 36 degrees celcius in Geneva in July. Despite opening the bay window in large, despite the fan, and even when the temperature outside at night was down to 24, it was still at least 36 celcius in the room. I was on the 5th floor (originally i was on 6th but asked not to be under the roof). The walls, the floor, the furniture, everything was warm! I didn't sleep AT ALL during the night.
Review 69:clean room, relatively cheap (150 chf), staff at the entrance all night, relatively central.
Review 70:weather very hot during our stay, fan was inadequate and difficult to get to sleep some nights
Review 71:friendly hotel, all staff very helpful, nothing was too much trouble
Review 72:The hotel needs air conditioning. I walked in my room after traveling for 15 hours and the temperature gauge showed 32 degrees celius. I have never been so uncomfortable and hot. Luckily, the manager moved me to a room that was on the opposite side of the hotel which was a bit cooler. It was still very warm but much better.
Review 73:The location was great. Helpful staff and my room was very clean. The front desk people were able to give me directions and recommend places for me to visit.
Review 74:no air-conditioning with average temperature of 32 Celsius, outside would get colder during the night but not in the rooms. Could not sleep at all. Tried to cool the room by leaving the window open all night long; the noise from the street would wake me at 6am. The hair drier was not working, the safe neither. Plugs are not fully European so despite the fact I do live in Europe I had great problems using my electronic.
Review 75:location, wifi
Review 76:Geneva was experiencing an extremely hot and humid spell, and with a lack of air conditioning, the room was unbearably hot. Despite the fact that we were given a fan, sleep was very difficult. Parking very expensive.
Review 77:Staff extremely friendly and helpful, breakfast very good.
Review 78:Room lacked air conditioning - so quite stuffy in hot weather.
Review 79:Location great, and not bad value for Geneva. Breakfast was extra CHF 15 but fantastic - well worth having.
Review 80:Wifi was very bad and it was very hot in the room which made it very hard to sleep. Very expensive stay for a room with no aircon.
Review 81:Room was very clean.
Review 82:Really needs air con and we were not advised about the road works happening at the very front of the hotel. The work started at 6.30am and was very very noisy.
Review 83:Central location
Review 84:The room was tiny, and unbearably HOT. the hotel only provided one tiny fan which did not help at all. It was very uncomfortable. For the price there should be air conditioning
Review 85:Great location
Review 86:room on the 6th floor, elevator goes only to 5th floor. slow WIFI.
Review 87:very good location, close to the train station and the lake. very clean. hotel staff friendly and helpful. very good breakfast.
Review 88:Nothing.
Review 89:5 minutes walk from the Cornavin station and a minute away from the lake. Room is a bit old fashioned decor wise but suited me well for my stay. Reception staff were great.
Review 90:- lift goes up to floor 5, my room was on floor 6 - incredibly hot in the rooms - very slow Wi-Fi - while the room was clean, all the furniture was very old and looked worn out - if this is a short business trip for you, then give this hotel a chance, but if your trip is a vacation - think twice - I would be dissapoined if I had to stay in such a hotel during holidays
Review 91:- good location - clean room
Review 92:My room was on 5th floor and it got hot during the afternoon. They had provided a table fan. However, to be fair, may be that is how hotels in Geneva are - no AC and priced on the higher side.
Review 93:Cleanliness, excellent location, very courteous staff.
Review 94:Internet was slow at times.
Review 95:Very helpful and kind staff, good breakfast, great central location with free transport card given, very clean rooms (although a bit small). Overall great value.
Review 96:the only thing we didn't like was the elevator--very small and old-school, with room really for only 2 people at a time. We took the stairs except for taking our suitcases up.
Review 97:The hotel has a great location. The staff were great (including keeping our luggage on both ends of our stay), the rooms were comfortable, the wifi was good. In general it was a great stay.
Review 98:Could hear busy traffic or road works in the morning- obviously no fault of the hotels but I suppose walls or windows could be thicker
Review 99:Staff were super helpful and friendly. Hotel gives you a free travel card which allows free public transport for your whole stay, we also used that card to et back to the airport which was a one stop train- super easy. Beautiful hotel and minutes walk from lake Geneva and not to far more for shops.
Review 100:Some rather noisy guests with no consideration of the early hour.
Review 101:It's proximity to the railway station. Also we were given cards for free transport during our stay on all trams, buses and trains and ferry.
Review 102:Very friendly, helpful staff. Excellent breakfast (charged extra, so you only pay when you actually have breakfast). Good value for money (by Geneva standards). Close to Cornavin station and lots of public transport options.
Review 103:I liked everything. Hotel is just across the street of the railway station. Hotel staff is very kind and helpfull and happy. Single room was large, quiet and clean. Breakfast was very good with savoury and sweet things to eat. Will visit this hotel again when travelling to Geneva.
Review 104:I never leave feed back but I really would like to this time. The floors are tiled, and so spent my evening hearing a lady upstairs walk around in highheels (tac tac tac tac tac... tac tac tac). Further, the door in my room was very very thin without any seals, so could hear the hallway and elevator noise very clearly - luckly I was very tired from travelling so was able to sleep but if you are a light sleeper I wouldn't count on having a good rest. I needed an ironing machine to press my shirt and the phone in my room either didn't work or the reception didn't answer so I had to call the reception from my mobile phone then I was told me to bring my shirt down to reception as they couldn't provide the ironing machine to my room - lazy staff or not enough hotel equipment.
Review 105:Room very warm & stuffy & this could not be changed as the whole hotel was set to the same temperature , we tried opening the window but there was a lot of noise outside
Review 106:Apart from the breakfast room, it feels very dated. Wobbly old wooden furniture in the room on a tiled floor (scraping chairs and noisy feet above). Very annoying that when you lie on the bed and lean against the wall (the only way to watch the high wall-mounted TV), the bed slides away from the wall. Bring some slippers.
Review 107:Pleasant breakfast in a modern environment - the croissants are excellent. HDTV shows MotoGP! Decent bathroom. Comfy bed. Great location in town near Manor and the bus and train stations.
Review 108:The only thing to look into are some dark spots between the tiles in the bathroom which somehow spoil the impression of a spotless place, however the bath tub and overall the bathroom and the room itself are very clean.
Review 109:Very well located a few minutes from th station, yet in a small street, safe and quiet. It is definitely worth it taking a roommwhich faces the courtyard, and yes, the top (6) floor rooms are much better decorated than others and have a balcony. Staff is all nice, but my special thanks to Karine and her colleague ( sorry I forgot the name) at the reception who were extremely kind and helpful!
Review 110:Just one thing is the roadworks in the street which started early in the morning woke us up
Review 111:Staff was friendly and gave us useful information about the city. The room was clean and quite big and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was good especially the croissants.
Review 112:Small room but being single for one night it did not matter.
Review 113:Location: cannot be more central than this! The hotel gives you a one day bus/tramway/train subscription for the city of Geneva. Internet connection is really good. The personnel is straightforward and very helpful. Very good value for money.
Review 114:location was not far from the train station (under 10 min walk) and just opposite the department store (Manor). You can take trams from the nearest station "Coutance" to explore Geneva. Downloading the Apps "TPG" on your phone will give you info about the trams schedule and nearest station. The staff will give you a free pass for Geneva transportation.
Review 115:The morning breakfast isn't worth the 15 Franks. Just go eat somewhere else and it will be better.
Review 116:I got a great price on booking.Com . The hotel is nice and close to the train and within walking distance of everything someone would want to see in Geneva.
Review 117:Wi-fi was a bit hit and miss Would have been nice ton have a wider range of food for breakfast
Review 118:Clean Safety deposit box Comfortable bed Spacious room Quality of food was good
Review 119:Like a lot of hotels, the bed was a bit hard.
Review 120:With just a 3 minute walk to the trains, buses and trams or a 5 minute walk to the lake we found this to be really well located. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was pretty good with a decent amount of choice. Bed sheets and towels were changed each day and the whole place was clean and tidy.
Review 121:no iron board in room, there is a common area where ironing could be done. Room is not sound proof, could hear noise from the adjacent rooms.
Review 122:Friendly staff, central location, ideal for tourists.
Review 123:they took payment on the card used to guarantee the room without telling us before we checked out - not the card we wanted to use to pay due to fee if used overseas - appauling
Review 124:comfortable, clean bedroom and bathroom, free wifi, adequate buffet breakfast
Review 125:We had to change the room because of the miscomunication between the hotel stuff: so pack and unpack on a 3 nights stay was very disturbing. Also make sure you book through booking.com entire stay because they will try to extra charge you! Over all, service and facilites i will say it is more a 2 star hotel.
Review 126:Location
Review 127:Too warm in my room (3rd floor). But I stayed there in February so having the window open all night did help.
Review 128:Vicinity to train station. Good value for money (note: for Geneva). Clean room, friendly staff.
Review 129:I was a little unhappy about the quality of the breakfast and not having smoking rooms for people like me.
Review 130:The location, the cleanence and the internet servicec.
Review 131:The ongoing construction in front of the hotel that started early in the morning (even on weekends) and continued till late evening, with lots of noise, dust and impossibility of accessing the hotel entrance. Hope that construction ends soon.
Review 132:The perfect location, cleanliness, friendly and helpful staff.
Review 133:Low wi-fi speed, poor breakfast on week-ends, no chairs / table on the balcony
Review 134:Excellent location (3 mins walk to the train station, 1 min walk to the bus stop where bus to the airport stops, 3-5 mins walk to the lake, about 10 mins walk to the old town), clean and tidy double room with spacious balcony, large TV with lots of channels, nice stuff
Review 135:Nothing considering the reasonable price.
Review 136:Location near train and bus stations. Short walk to both. Proximity to excellent food store and to reasonably priced eating places. Will probably take my wife to the Excelsior for a short break.
Review 137:the floor in our room was tiled with ceramic tiles, so it was a little bit cold, cos' we been there in winter
Review 138:comfy big bed, nice and modest breakfast, perfect location near the main rail station Cornavin and to the old town and there are big shopping centre just opposite the hotel. Plus at the reception they gave us free transport voucher. Hospitable staff. Clean room
Review 139:The internet connexion was slow. The hotel is clean, but the room was a little dated. Not a problem, because the price was good for Geneva.
Review 140:The location of this hotel is excellent for shopping and business. You can walk everywhere and it is next to the train station. The price was good for Geneva.
The Fine Print
Please note that children under 12 years have a free breakfast, if breakfast is booked at the hotel for parents.
